I think the implications are pretty clear when you read between the lines of painting your political enemies as pedophiles. It’s a very easy way to rile people up into a lynch mob. Here’s the fascist playbook on this: target a minority (LGBTQ in particular) as some kind of deviant or predator, legitimize vigilante violence against this group, extend that to the next group or anyone who tries to defend the first group. Rinse and repeat until you are able to consolidate power and successfully kill or imprison your political enemies with impunity.

Steve , in Biden to call for 5% cap on annual rent increases, as he tries to show plans to tame inflation

Treating the symptom.
Okay I guess. I’ll get excited when I see a plan to treat the disease.

SirDerpy ,

Not even. Can’t charge more for rent when it’s already max out against income. It’s a placebo that’ll have zero effect. Don’t get too excited about a “plan”. This is the plan.

njm1314 ,

What world are you living in when they can’t raise rates too high for your income level? Not the one the rest of us are living in.

SirDerpy ,

The vast majority of individuals must be able to afford to house, feed, and cloth themselves, as well as travel to and from work. If not they will riot. This is bad for economic growth, the mandate of capitalism. It’s particularly bad when the market is still significantly inflated relative the economy.

It’ll never be written into law. However, Biden’s proposed rent caps under projected inflation, signifying rent has fully saturated its allocation of income. Housing began balancing systemically naturally, human sellers drying up. Landlords have no obstacles.

I live in a world of nuance. The rent sucks.

njm1314 ,

Historically that’s actually not what causes people to riot. The slow chipping away actually almost never causes riots. It’s the immediate stripping of a right or privilege. Look back at history that’s how it Works nearly every single time. You’re basically making the same argument people who you sanctions as a political tool make. That if you keep making life shittier and shittier and shittier slowly the people will riot. Doesn’t work.

Furthermore capitalism does not possess the capacity to change in that manner. It does not possess the capacity to adjust to the needs of the masses. Thinking capitalism will fix this is insane.

SirDerpy ,

If you look at history, the last half century is far from “slow chipping away”.

njm1314 ,

The last half century of political sanctions? What does that even mean? I feel like you were trying to be clever and you lost the point somewhere. If you ever had one.

Hollywood. Think about it.

VirtualOdour ,

I looked it up, the ACLU said it “unnecessarily intrudes on the fundamental rights of marriage without due cause” and fought prior attempts to legislate against it. Planned Parenthood were against it because they said it was a slippery slope that might affect abortion rights (I didn’t see rational for this supplied but assume they have some)

So it wasn’t Hollywood as the other poster glibly asserted, actually movies like ‘childbrides of the ozarks’ were important in brining it to popular attention and helping initial pushes against it. Currently there are democrats pushing for legislation to ban in, supported in many case by the ‘evil Hollywood elites’ as seen from conspiracy theory world as they’re big donors and fund raisers for democratic causes but also ACLU and PP so possibly yeah they were slightly involved in the ban being resisted but not in the way suggested.

The ACLU have since chances their stance on child marriage, I imagine planned parenthood have too but I couldn’t find that stated. Most current resistance is coming from religious focused Republicans.

It’s fucking shitty and serves no greater purpose.

Of course it serves a greater purpose, in the eyes of those who are in favour of it, otherwise they wouldn’t want to keep/extend it.

Keeping women and girls in subservient vulnerable positions, and men satisfied and in positions of power (even if it’s only within their own home, where they get to then take their rage and frustration at having no real power elsewhere out on their wives and children), is what the patriarchy is all about.

It also serve capitalism, in that the girls in these marriages are much more likely to be kept in the abusive relationship and have more kids than average, kids who will become workers (E: with both parent and children being home schooled by their respective parent or “educated” by the church, making them more easy to manipulate and exploit).

It also serves christofascist white supremacy, which has manufactured racist nonsense like “the great replacement” theory to ensure fundamentalists only marry and reproduce within the group, ensuring its survival.

None of these things are bugs, they are features of these systems, and until as a society we confront that, we will never be able to tear them down and be free.

Electric cars in the US are more expensive mostly due to higher costs of overhead. For example, we have a minimum wage, and China uses forced labor.

Good luck buying anything made in the US for less money than on AliExpress.

Edit: Is this really the same group of people that want US businesses to divest from Israel, defending products made with the slave labor of Uyghurs?

In Xinjiang, the government is the trafficker. Authorities use threats of physical violence, forcible drug intake, physical and sexual abuse, and torture to force detainees to work in adjacent or off-site factories or worksites producing garments, footwear, carpets, yarn, food products, holiday decorations, building materials, extractives, materials for solar power equipment and other renewable energy components, consumer electronics, bedding, hair products, cleaning supplies, personal protective equipment, face masks, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and other goods—and these goods are finding their way into businesses and homes around the world.

state.gov/forced-labor-in-chinas-xinjiang-region/

In other words, the U.S. content of “Made in China” is about 55%. The fact that the U.S. content of Chinese goods is much higher than for imports as a whole is mainly due to higher retail and wholesale margins on consumer electronics and clothing than on most other goods and services.

www.frbsf.org/…/us-made-in-china/

It is simply more economical to use forced labor than to pay minimum wage. It results in lower price points on Chinese branded products, and higher margins on US branded products produced in China. This problem is not exclusive to automotive manufacturing, as illustrated in the above research article.

To be clear on my personal opinion, I’m not recommending US industry over foreign. I drive a Hyundai. I’m specifically speaking against Chinese industry, just as Biden’s tariffs are not applicable to imports aside from China.

There are plenty of automobiles manufactured in the US, Mexico, Japan, South Korea, Germany, and the UK that don’t use forced labor. I also recommend supporting those factories instead of China.

Also, your second link about Chinese retirement has nothing to do with Uyghur slave labor.

UnderpantsWeevil ,
@UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world avatar

There are plenty of automobiles manufactured in the US, Mexico, Japan, South Korea, Germany, and the UK

And they’re all complicit. BMW, Volkswagon, Jaguar Land Rover all source parts from China.

In fact, the entire US supply chain is reliant on Chinese parts.

Earlier this month, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) said it would be temporarily halting production at a plant in Kragujevac, Serbia due to a lack of parts from China, while Hyundai and Renault have done the same in South Korea.

You can whitewash your supply chain by slapping an western label on Chinese parts. But this isn’t demonstrating any kind of concern for labor rights or ethical insourcing. FFS, we won’t even let Volkswagon plants in Tennessee unionize.

Nevermind Uyghur slave labor. Americans can’t even bargain for better salaries. Its too much for our fragile economy to handle.

disguy_ovahea ,

That was true of those brands. They’ve since been pulling out of China, leaving abandoned factories that are now being used by the Chinese market. There are still plenty of other ethical options for automobiles.

Many nations are cracking down on imports related to Uyghur labor.

In December 2021, Congress passed, and President Biden signed the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA) – the strongest tool the United States or any other country has forged in the fight against the atrocities of forced labor.

dhs.gov/…/enforcing-uyghur-forced-labor-preventio…

politico.eu/…/china-forced-labor-ban-europe-us-uy…

UnderpantsWeevil ,
@UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world avatar

They’ve since been pulling out of China

Firstly, no they haven’t. US trade with China has only ever increased year-over-year going back to the 1960s.

Secondly, our hunger for cheap labor is sending us to penal colonies across the rest of the Pacific Rim. This isn’t something that began or ended with a single factory in a single country.

Many nations are cracking down on imports related to Uyghur labor.

They’re not. The business is just being laundered through front companies.

Upon the review of the ASPI report, Skechers said it contacted senior management at Luzhou prior to conducting two additional audits of the factory — none of which revealed any indications of forced labor. Luzhou, however, did confirm that members of the Uyghur ethnic group did comprise a portion of its workforce but were employed under compliant terms and conditions.

Shoving thumbs in my ears and saying “I don’t see the non-compliance, its all fine actually!” and letting the provisions go completely unenforced.

And that’s before you get into direct sales through Ali Baba and Temu

ustr.gov/issue-areas/…/tariff-actions

Tariffs aren’t great solutions, but the only alternative would be outright banning. The latter would have a sudden and financially profound impact on American consumers.

UnderpantsWeevil ,
@UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world avatar

Again, I agree, but my comment was about automobiles.

Nearly 40% of Honda’s automobile production took place in China in the last financial year.

Honda would continue to keep its supply chain in China for the domestic market in the world’s second-largest economy while building a separate one for markets outside of China, the Sankei said. It did not say where it got the information.

That’s not “pulling out of China”. That’s a sign of Chinese domestic automobile consumption rising.

Biden has expanded Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 to include more imports.

I haven’t seen much to suggest he’s enforcing it. These laws are consistently toothless, in the same way more and more of our regulatory system is toothless.

All it takes is one nihilist and a bomb to kill a czar. Nobody with power and security in it is so powerful and secure that they should act like they’re infinite in these traits

djsoren19 ,

Yeah, but that wouldn’t actually solve any issues here. It would make Alito a martyr and kick off the American Civil War the conservatives keep jerking themselves off over.

Skates ,

It took a war to contain nazis the last time. Maybe it takes a war this time around as well. And truthfully? Better to have it be a civil war when the head of state is a Democrat. Because if this won’t be a civil war or if Trump is in power when it starts, nukes will be used.

exanime , in Musk accused of selling $7.5 billion of Tesla stock before releasing disappointing sales data that plunged the share price to two-year low

How could a CEO of any company trade his own stock from the company and not be insider trading?

The fact they are allowed to control stock is laughable… At best, stock from the company you control should be in a blind trust (which would still be laughable but we can at least pretend)

Michal ,

They have to give advanced notice before selling, they can’t just sell stock on the whim.

Sabata11792 ,

It was clearly more profitable to break the law than to follow it.

exanime ,

So?.. I am the CEO… I know our new line of highly anticipated space tentacle dildos are not going to be in stores by Christmas as expected, I give notice and sell stock before the public finds out and stock goes down

I also know, because of the delay, we are squeezing the Chinese manufacturer, so I will give notice and buy the stock in January knowing we are probably going to offer deep discounts to get those consumers back

How is giving advance notice any safety? unless the rules say they need to give 500 days of notice or something long enough there is no possible way to predict properly with ALL the information and power a CEO would have to manipulate the stock

dogslayeggs ,

If I’m a stock holder or potential buyer of stock and I read that the CEO is dumping billions of dollars of his own stock, I am going to think something bad is happening. Notifying the public in advance gives us more information to decide what we should do.

Sometimes, that information just tells us this is a scheduled dump of a small percentage, which is normal and expected. Sometimes it is a huge dump, which is unexpected.

They don’t have to notify the public at all

There is nothing in the SEC laws that makes it necessary to disclose the use of Rule 10b5-1 to the public, but that doesn’t mean companies shouldn’t release the information anyway. Announcements of utilizing Rule 10b5-1 are useful in warding off public relations problems and helping investors understand the logistics behind certain insider trades.

dogslayeggs ,

You’re correct. They do have to notify the SEC, but not necessarily release that publicly.

rbesfe ,

The public will see the notice and sell their stock before the CEO can, tanking the price

The rules do not specify the public should be informed at all

I don’t want to defend CEOs here, but there is a code for in the USA, Rule 10b5-1, which sets out a CEOs stock trading plan.

The reason, if you’re not Elon Musk, is that most CEOs are paid in stock and so it’s inevitable they’re going to sell some. So they set out a plan to say I will sell X shares on X date and the market shouldn’t be spooked.

What Elon did here is sell 45 million shares, seemingly outside of any plan, which is insane. Usually they wouldn’t be offloading such a volume.

Selling a small amount of your stock doesn’t indicate you don’t have faith in your own company, but more that you want to convert some of your reward (pay) into actual cash.

I’m not saying the system is good, just that this is how it works.

Totally get it… which is why my comment was intended to mean “what the fuck kind of system is this”… not “Elon bad”… although, yes, Elon bad ;-)

The SEC has already proved itself absolutely toothless. Even if it was illegal, who would prosecute?

Martha Stewart this motherfucker.

cosmicrookie ,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

So… i vaguelly knew about her so did some searching

she served five months in federal prison for fraud and was released in March 2005. There was speculation that the incident would effectively end her media empire,[2] but in 2005 Stewart began a comeback campaign[3] and her company returned to profitability in 2006.[4] Stewart rejoined the board of directors of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia in 2011[5] and became chairwoman of her namesake company again in 2012

Its pretty mild isn’t it?

Fedizen ,

except they wont even do that to musk. Nobody wants to try a billionaire in court, musk is known to send armies of private detectives on people. He’ll close a factory in your district out of spite. Billionaires are afraid of taxes because as long as they have way too much money they can continue to do the illegal shit that made them rich.

Texas_Hangover ,

And she got street cred, and hangs out with snoop dog now lol.

Didn’t notice before now!

Love the idea of two of them only one has served time.
