I had. '68 Mustang back in the 90s and a Subaru Solterra today

3 people, $1000 per day for park hopper tickets with Genie+ and Lightning Lanes, no guarantees of getting on rides. Food, beverage and accomodations not included.

Nomecks ,

This totally glosses over the fact that they’re apparently allergic to overpasses in Florida, and the second you have to leave the Disney property for anything, even by Disney shuttle, it will take you probably an hour to get more than 5km from the entrance.

Nomecks ,

Looks like he’s a Ph.D bridge engineer. Good on him.

Nomecks ,

It’s even better than that. A lot of companies are taking NVIDIA’s pre-built workflows, running their data through them and selling the results as their own AI. “We build proprietary RAG AI!”

Nomecks ,

Stanford is literally in Silicon Valley. It’s no shock that the University that cranks out tech bros and is funded by the same group doesn’t want anyone reporting on anything unethical.

Nomecks ,

Sorta like how the US runs the petroleum markets? You should go look at how they deal with softwood lumber too. Multiple WTO complaints for unfair trade practices. The US chose where they want to pour their subsidies and so has China.

Nomecks ,

We’re talking about EVs and not comprehending my post, apparently.

Nomecks , (edited )

It’s not a matter of “allow”, it’s a matter of what governments choose to subsidize. There’s no point in getting pissy at China for subsidizing an industry to the detriment of other countries when the US actively does it in other industries. The US could do the same with batteries and EVs, but there’s no political will.

This is how the Internet was back in the 90s

With the recent issues of transgender people in sports, why don’t we move some sports over to a weight-class system?

Obviously this won’t work for all sports, but things like football, track, soccer, it would allow for de-gendered team, even allowing athletes with the skills but not the genetically-endowed physical attributes to have a place to play....

Nomecks ,

I think they should have classes limited by hormone level and just let people supplement to equality.

Nomecks ,

PCIe is a bottleneck on large GPU systems. NVIDIA developed the NVLink protocol, which is way faster, to interconect GPUs and GPU systems on NDR400 Infiniband networks.

Nomecks ,

There’s a lot of bureaucratic delays in large enterprises and public sector. If you’re doing a job right you’re likely waiting on other people 80% of the time.

I do all kinds of free training when I’ve got downtime. Psychology, the sales cycle, dealing with people, project planning etc. Can all help with almost any job

Nomecks ,

Microsoft Planner. It integrates well with thr rest of the M365 suite, and work pays for it, so whatever.

60 year old house. They used to use this stuff called “no corrode” pipe for sewage. It was made of tar and straw and had around a 60 year setvice life. Mine finally collapsed, backed up and caused $30k of damage to my basement + 25k cost to dig up my back yard to replace it.

Feeling lost and with no direction, what skill should I learn?

Hi everyone. I am feeling like I’ve lost any direction after getting laid off earlier this year (was working as an analyst in telecom and very recently landed a much lower position in healthcare data entry due to necessity). I already have several hobbies but I am either burnt out on them or they have lost their luster...

This guy didn’t read the robot series.

Nomecks , (edited )

The point of the first three books was that arbitrary rules like the three laws of robotics were pointless. There was a ton of grey area not covered by seemingly ironclad rules and robots could either logicically choose or be manipulated into breaking them. Robots, in all of the books, operate in a purely amoral manner.

I used to rebuild laser printer fusers for the same reason

Nomecks ,

They make chips that do super complex math really really fast. They also make super fast networking gear to allow a crapload of them to do super complex math together

Lemmy.ml tankie censorship problem

I feel like we need to talk about Lemmy’s massive tankie censorship problem. A lot of popular lemmy communities are hosted on lemmy.ml. It’s been well known for a while that the admins/mods of that instance have, let’s say, rather extremist and onesided political views. In short, they’re what’s colloquially referred to...

Nomecks ,

No, they control their content and you control whose instances you sub to.

Can I refuse MS Authenticator?

So my company decided to migrate office suite and email etc to Microsoft365. Whatever. But for 2FA login they decided to disable the option to choose “any authenticator” and force Microsoft Authenticator on the (private) phones of both employees and volunteers. Is there any valid reason why they would do this, like it’s...

Nomecks ,

If your company is enforcing geographic location as a security qualifier then MS Authenticator can poll your device. Also you can use push authentication with the MS suite.

Nomecks ,

I just got it enabled and it most definitely wants your location. It has to poll my device’s location once an hour by my work’s policy.

Nomecks ,

Yes it’s optional. A lot of companies have compliance requirements where none of this would fly.

Nomecks ,

I was gonna say this is my favorite, with IRCn on top. It’s been a while since I connected. Is EFNet still around?

Olive oil smokes burns at low temps and shouldn’t be used for searing.

Nomecks ,

I think you get a split of hard right conspiracy theorists and hard left granola crunchers.

Nomecks ,

Listen Elon, I have three words that will blow your mind: Middle out compression!

Nomecks ,

Him and everyone else. The only problem is that NVIDIA can only build them so fast, and there’s only so much high power datacenter space.

Nomecks ,

I’ve heard “It’s like selling ice to Eskimos”.

Erasure coding may be a better option than RAID.

You grease up a sled and drag it down a track carved into some rocks.

Never heard of Hyperloop eh?

Nomecks ,

Because a problem may be very difficult to calculate but very easy to check.

You can buy large second hand enterprise hard disks for relatively cheap. 20TB disks are like 250 bucks.
