MicroWave OP , in Biden signs order protecting Grand Canyon lands sacred to tribes
@MicroWave@lemmy.world avatar

The national monument will protect lands important to a dozen Native American tribes, in part, from potential uranium mining. It will also help tell the “full American story” of the people who have called the region home for millennia, Biden said during his speech.

But the national monument designation has already been criticized by House Republicans who have called for a probe for information on how the monument boundaries were selected and how it will affect mining and energy development. They’ve argued it will block new uranium mining at a time when the U.S. should be looking to become more energy independent, especially given the prominence of Russia in the market to provide low-enriched uranium to nuclear reactors.

DrPop ,

Aren’t we already energy independent?

Zombiepirate , in Hillsborough schools cut back on Shakespeare, citing new Florida rules
@Zombiepirate@lemmy.world avatar

Here’s an excerpt from They Thought They Were Free: The Germans, 1933-45, an analysis of the causes and destructive path of Fascism before and during WWII. A high school teacher who joined the party to cover for his anti-Nazi past is talking about which Shakespeare plays he could teach:

“Tell me, Herr Hildebrandt, what about Julius Caesar?”

He smiled very, very wryly. “Julius Caesar? No… no.”

“Was it forbidden?”

“Not that I remember. But that is not the way it was. Everything was not regulated specifically, ever. It was not like that at all. Choices were left to the teacher’s discretion, within the ‘German spirit.’ That was all that was necessary; the teacher had only to be discreet. If he himself wondered at all whether anyone would object to a given book, he would be wise not to use it.

This was a much more powerful form of intimidation, you see, than any fixed list of acceptable or unacceptable writings. The way it was done was, from the point of view of the regime, remarkably clever and effective. The teacher had to make the choices and risk the consequences; this made him all the more cautious.”

MicroWave OP , in In Utah and Kansas, state courts flex power over new laws regulating abortion post-Roe
@MicroWave@lemmy.world avatar

“State courts are incredibly important in this moment when patients are having difficulty accessing abortion because many states have banned it entirely so patients are traveling hundreds or even thousands of miles,” Alice Wang, a Center for Reproductive Rights attorney, told reporters after arguing providers’ case in a courtroom in the Kansas City area.

tal , (edited )
@tal@kbin.social avatar

The actual bar for treason in the US is a very high one and she almost certainly does not meet it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treason_laws_in_the_United_States

Fewer than 30 people have ever been charged with treason under these laws.[3]

In popular discourse, people assert that something is reason in a vastly wider range of cases than where the law is really applicable.

    isn’t it fun to think that ANYONE could decide to do this at ANY TIME? Literally all that’s keeping you from being crushed is people constantly deciding specifically not to do so.

    God i am so glad i decided to stop using cars unless strictly necessary.

    eek2121 ,

    God i am so glad i decided to stop driving

    Why? Were you the idiot that decided to do this?

    Redscare867 ,

    Probably because they don’t have to spend as much time around idiots who decide to do this sort of thing.

    echodot ,

    But if other people are responsible for deciding to do this how does their decision on driving make any difference.

    Is somebody drives into my house with their car I don’t see how my driving licence has any bearing

    Redscare867 ,

    If you live in a city where it is possible to live without a car, a smaller percentage of the population drives, thus you don’t have to be around as many drivers per capita, so the chances of encountering someone like this are lower.

    Swedneck ,
    @Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

    The point is that by staying off the roads i put as much distance as possible between me and cars, which makes it very unlikely for me to be hit by one.

    Look up the statistics, cars are one of the leading causes of death in the US and certainly not a small cause worldwide.

    I_Fart_Glitter ,

    Doesn’t not driving mean traveling just as nearby to cars, but without the protective metal box around you?

    Or do you mean a specific incident where you considered crashing into the roof of a house but decided to stop driving before you did?

    Swedneck ,
    @Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

    no? i just walk/bike/use public transit.

    Keeps me much further from the cars (or inside a very big car) and it’s more enjoyable anyways.

    Also wops i should have written “decided to stop being driven” as i have never driven a car myself lol, gonna edit that

    I_Fart_Glitter ,

    Ah, you must live somewhere nice where the bike lanes aren’t just the leftmost 1/4 of the car lanes.

    Swedneck ,
    @Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

    Yeah, we have 2-3 meter wide shared sidewalks for bikes and cyclists, very cheap and easy way to guarantee that people can get by without a car.

    reverendsteveii ,

    meter

    That explains it. In places where they use feet, but the bike lane only gets like one, maybe two of them tops, and that’s assuming there’s a bike lane in the first place and that there’s any enforcement when a car just parks right in it.

    I_Fart_Glitter ,

    Sounds dreamy!

    You must be fun at parties. No duh it’s evidence. It’s cut and dry evidence of conspiracy, so compelling that it’s almost like he metaphorically killed someone and is standing over their dead body with a smoking gun. You didn’t see the gunshot, but you can be 99% sure of who the shooter was.

    As an outsider (and someone with this name situation), I’m morbidly curious about what happens when a kid has a name that’s the opposite gender as them, either because it’s a gender neutral name in their culture, or because their parents just named them like that? Because I have a sneaking suspicion they’re suddenly going to be fine with ‘unapproved nicknames’ when their alternative is calling a boy Vyvian or a girl Terrance
