TransplantedSconie , in Texas Republicans Ban Women From Using Highways for Abortion Appointments

Doesn’t this run afoul of the commerce clause?

A random ass County can’t ban travel on any roads or highway for any reason, right? That’s strictly the job of congress.

    ristoril_zip ,

My guess is this is what will doom this law, specifically since they’re also looking at drugs which are certainly commodities from out of state.

It might also be a prior restraint case depending on if traveling to a women’s healthcare provider is protected expression.

Like, the problem for the county here is trying to stop people from doing something they can’t prove they’re actually going to do.

They might be able to plus up other charges based on using county property in the commission of some other “crime” (gigantic air quotes). Sort of like getting extra charges due to using the USPS to commit a crime.

    Zron ,

Exactly. They’d have to prove you were specifically going there to get an abortion.

Cops can’t stop you because you were on your way to a bank, just because they feel you might want to rob it. You have to have actually done something illegal in the first place.

    somePotato ,

Cops can’t stop you because you were on your way to a bank, just because they feel you might want to rob it.

LOL Sure, in theory they can’t, but in reality cops do stop people for any made up reason and they can also shoot you for any made up reason without consequence.

And “pro-life” people will support every cop that kills a pregnant woman on that highway.

    reversebananimals ,

My first thought as well. There is NO way this doesn’t get struck down in a court case. If you can’t even ban guns on streets near schools (US v. Lopez) then you definitely can’t ban a person from driving on a road to get to a medical procedure in a different state.

    eestileib ,

Have you seen the other decisions made by SCOTUS?

They don’t give a shit about consistency or law or precedent. They are politicians put there to deliver specific outcomes.

    rchive ,

They do care about precedent, usually too much in my opinion. There have been many cases in the last few years brought to SCOTUS seeking the overturning of the doctrine of Qualified Immunity, but SCOTUS has in all cases either not taken them up or not ruled on that issue. They basically keep saying, “we’ve already ruled on this, we won’t touch it unless Congress changes the law in some way.” Dobbs was like the one issue SCOTUS has actually overturned a previous opinion on in recent years.

    rchive ,

It’s not a ban, per se, it “just” opens people up to civil liability. The reason they do it that way is to skirt the Constitution.

Both parties decided that seniority = power, and if you’ll always have more next year, it’s never a good time to step aside.

With a “bonus” that younger generations never get the experience till they’re also old as shit. The parties have no reason to change, because they’re ran by the most senior people.

Puzzle_Sluts_4Ever , (edited ) in Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis Wrote Letters in Support of Danny Masterson Ahead of Rape Sentencing; Kutcher Called Him a ‘Role Model’

Everyone is losing their minds about this. And they are right to.

    But also?

This is incredibly common in court cases. These kinds of letters can make a huge difference during sentencing. To put it in context, a cousin got arrested for going on a burglary spree. Nothing violent but he was a real piece of shit. He and his lawyer basically asked everyone he had ever had a positive interaction with to write letters. I tentatively agreed because of his mother but they sent my letter back because I wasn’t advocating strong enough. Because if you think someone “deserves” the minimum sentence? You ask for them to be (not the right word but) exonerated. And so forth.

Similarly, we were asked to write these months before the trial actually began. They didn’t end up using my letter, but they requested the people whose letters they were going to use to attend the trial and they pretended it was written between conviction and sentencing. When you have no defense whatsoever, you do what you can to try and get leniency.

Personally? I think enough of this was “known” for the past few decades that I think anyone who would write a letter for masterson (aside from maybe his family of deranged cultists) are right assholes (they are assholes for different reasons). But I would take the “they wrote these after hearing the testimony of the victims” with a grain of salt. Same with the strength of what they are asking for. Doesn’t make it right, but is still good to have context. Especially in the case of celebrities, there are good odds they had their publicists write these when they were asked a few years back and forgot about them.

And I’ll just add on. scientology has lost a LOT of its power over the past decade or so and is basically held up by the will of tom cruise running around on camera. But they still have a LOT of influence in hollywood and masterson and his family have already been known to shitlist people who cross them (including apparently their own father?). I doubt anyone in the core cast and crew would need to worry about that at this point, but I can definitely see some of the names on the list being in that space of “Well, I either write a letter or don’t work for a decade”. Doesn’t stop them from being an asshole, but does impact how much of an asshole they are (irony!).

    LifeInMultipleChoice ,

Should, yes. Does it already exist, yes. It can just be time consuming. Kill one parent surviving parent or guardian or state placed guardian is then supposed to go to civil court and a judge will rule the person pays support. Some would say that is costly but the court fees will end up having to be paid by the person the judge rules against. (Which many attorneys will pick up pro bono because no judge is going to rule that killing a parent(s) didnt cause at LEAST financial/ impact on the child/family.

    afraid_of_zombies ,

    Goblin_Mode ,

I mean I will readily accept that the internet is a fickle place and nothing is ever as black and white as it would seem but there has been a metric fucktonne of examples lately for why Teslas are just straight up bad cars. Cheap materials, poorly wired electronics, broken features, etc.

Like just casually scroll through any car subreddit or other online forum and you’ll see people recording their Teslas just breaking down.

    Rusticus ,

But yet they keep selling a shit ton. And if you talk to an average owner they love their Tesla. It’s almost as if you are looking at a biased sample that is not representative of the vast majority of owners.

    Rusticus ,

lol your point is actually the opposite logic. You’re so close! Only reading about complaints makes you think that car is shitty. I’m actually saying that reading about complaints on forums is a horrible way to assess car quality regardless of car make.

    “Stick with your delusions”

Brother you’re comparing, using numbers from the US, a market of around 2.5 million EVs to 250 million ICE.

Of those 2.5 million EVs over 900000 were sold in 2022.

You have braindamage if you think that’s a gotcha. I haven’t even started filtering down to how many of those are Teslas and the actual percentages therein.

You’re right, I’m too ignorant to understand how cars break down over time. Thankfully I have the god of time here to set me straight and prove otherwise.

    Rusticus ,

If you knew anything about statistics you would delete your account and hide in your mom’s basement in shame.

    set_secret ,

while it’s probably futile arguing with someone who clearly has half a brain cell ill attempt to explain the simple maths to you.

According to a report by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), there were an estimated 212,500 vehicle fires in the United States in 2018, resulting in 560 civilian deaths, 1,500 civilian injuries, and $1.9 billion in direct property damage.

Considering that there were approximately 276 million registered vehicles in the United States in 2018 we can calculate the number of fires per million ICE vehicles: 212500 vehicle fires divided by 276,000,000 registered vehicles × 1, 000,000 and the this = 770 fires per million ICE vehicles.

The study i previously linked you reveals an average EV fire frequency of six fires per million EVs in Australia, aligning with the global average (a million is the same outside of USA if you were unsure).

So try really really hard to understand this basic math. maybe you could get one of your more intelligent family members to explain it to you?

Additionally the skeptics guide to the universe podcast recently discussed this and they quoted very similar numbers to my search, and so maybe you’ll believe a neurosurgeon over me (but I expect not given your ludicrous position on this matter)

It’s not about gotchas it’s about facts. maybe Google what they are too?

    Jax ,

    ludicrous position on the matter

276 million registered vehicles, around a third of which were sold through the years of 2008 - 2023 (assuming all of those cars stayed on the field).

Leaving the other two thirds in question, whereas Tesla released its first Roadster in 2008.

Which means that you’ve got around 184 million cars skewing results. Let’s say that half of those were sold in the period from 1990-2008.

Which means those ICE vehicles in question, you know the old fucked up ones, still dwarf Teslas on the road by about 70 times (I’m not getting exact numbers for you).

Meanwhile the oldest Tesla is 15 years old and they’re starting to burn more and more.

But keep it up man, I’m sure if you defend Musks honor he’ll let you swallow a little bit of his cum. Maybe it’ll impart some rich magic onto you, who knows?

    Kage520 ,

Teslas are awesome to own and drive. It’s an annoying checklist that takes an hour when you first get the car to make sure your car isn’t one of the ones with the bad panels, doors that don’t close nicely, etc., But you can decline the car if it has any of those things, or they fix it right away. Once you are through that part it’s really a great vehicle, especially if you have a charger at home. Gad stations are super inconvenient if you think about it.

He tried to get the interview removed of course, but it still is on the Wayback Machine.

    Excerpt:

JC: How do you handle fear?

EM: Company death – not succeeding with the company – causes me a lot more stress than physical danger. But I’ve been in physical danger before. The funny thing is I’ve not actually been that nervous. In South Africa, my father had a private plane we’d fly in incredibly dangerous weather and barely make it back. This is going to sound slightly crazy, but my father also had a share in an Emerald mine in Zambia. I was 15 and really wanted to go with him but didn’t realize how dangerous it was. I couldn’t find my passport so I ended up grabbing my brother’s – which turned out to be six months overdue! So we had this planeload of contraband and an overdue passport from another person. There were AK-47s all over the place and I’m thinking, “Man, this could really go bad.”

But if he’s doing what you’re claiming he’s doing, won’t all the people on the left who bought Teslas jump ship when it’s time to get a new car? Even if you’re right, he’s still an idiot.

He moved production to Texas for tax reasons. That’s it. He’s not a fantastic businessman; he just hates paying his fair share.

China has entire towns that are toxic wastelands. This is just a political statement, probably their usual brainwashing of self.

    PatFussy , (edited )

Im almost 100% sure you pulled this propoganda out of your ass.

Edit: i concede, there is at least 1 known toxic waste dump area in China that has a lake full of rare earth metals

    Jax ,

I’m almost 100% sure that if I doubled the effort it took to find this link, I’d have an entire essay on the topic.

    www.bbc.com/…/20150402-the-worst-place-on-earth

Weird, I just saw a thread you were involved in yesterday and thought you were fucking dumb. Guess it was only a matter of time before you proved yourself a tankie or a conservative.

    PatFussy ,

This is kind of an interesting connection if you are bitching about me saying China doesnt own Taiwan given this article that you posted is about an autonomous region of China known as Inner Mongolia. Do you believe autonomous regions like Taiwan or Inner Mongolia are their own or are they Chinese?

Secondly, this article is 100% about rare earth metals being disposed and how our consumption forces them to have these sorts of places. Sure you are right, they have a lake in Baotou that is basically poison and its a biproduct due to Chinese practices in manufacturing. Ill give you that, but keep buying made in China, force your problems to someone else and then blame them for the conditions they have. You are the type to look the other way to slave labor as long as you get the product you want.

    Jax ,

No, actually I don’t buy anything made in China.

    Stay mad tankie.

    PatFussy ,

The cell phone you are holding had components made in china. About 80% of all battery production comes from China.

Its ok to say you dont know where you are buying the materials of the things you use, just dont forget what your purchasing power is helping to create. Its a toxic lake in northern China.

    Jax ,

Purchased 6 years ago, before I monitored what I buy.

I remembered why I thought you were a fucking moron. You make assumptions and shift goalposts like a section of a rubik’s cube.

Nice brigading btw, I’m sure you people will make Lemmy a better place.

    PatFussy ,

I conceded to you already after seeing the article you sent me… You were the one that brought up my post history so I was talking about that. Then you went and made a confusing statement about calling me a conservative and a tankie which made no sense. Now you are saying I brigade and strive to make Lemmy a worse place. You are the one calling me names and talking shit for seemingly no reason. You could have just dropped the link and left like a sane person but you had to hit me with the "i read your post history you nerd now i got you where i want you 🤓 "

    Jax ,

Bro what do you feed these goalposts? They are NOT supposed to move this much.

    PatFussy ,

Look around, you are the only one seeing goal posts here. There is no argument here. I told you already that. I was just saying if people want to complain about chinas waste, then they need to look in the mirror and see who is the real culprit

    Jax ,

Yeah, I’m sure buddy. Just like that other thread full of shifting goalposts.

You got slapped down there, you got slapped down here. Stop.

    PatFussy , (edited )

Lol im sorry i didnt realize I was talking to a kid. I am capable of having a discussion where I can change my mind and still have a nuanced opinion. I apologize if you cant and you have a single brain cell to work with.

You just want to punch down for some reason. I already said you got me on the issue on these places existing. From what it looks like, you just learned what goalposts were and you are seeing them everywhere. You are the one that also came to me saying my takes on other shit is stupid. Im okay to keep talking to you about how your take is stupid but at this point its a waste of time.

    Jax ,

Brother, two paragraphs in response to 4 sentences means you’re pressed. Stop before you make yourself look worse than you already do.

    PatFussy ,

Why big word when small word do. Haha me smart

What I now think of brainwashing and those who fell victims to it is almost completely different than what I did when I was younger.

I don’t blame you for thinking this way. Since these aren’t your ideas.

    Yes.

Or just compare the dangers of microplastic, of which China is quite a source. The microplastic will be around long after (most of) the tritium is long gone.

    tastysnacks ,

They don’t disappear, they fall out a window or get suicided in the back of the head twice. What kind of message does “disappeared” send?

    MossyFeathers ,

You never heard of someone getting “disappeared”? When someone “disappears” it’s not because they ran off, it’s because someone took them.

    PyroNeurosis ,
    @PyroNeurosis@lemmy.world avatar
