What's the most efficient way for peeling potatoes by hand? (sh.itjust.works)

Like, I get comments from people telling me it’s weird I always try to peel potatoes like I am trying to make the worlds longest 1-piece potato peel. To me it feels way for efficient and fun to continu down a potato in 1 peel, while circling around it, instead of randomly scraping a hundred different pieces of peel off and...

I don’t think hands are good at peeling potatoes. Maybe if you sharpen your nails?

UK economy bounced back from Covid, ONS revisions reveal (www.ft.com)

Official statistics on Friday added almost 2 per cent to the size of the UK economy, in a surprise move that showed the country recovered much faster from the pandemic than previously reported. The Office for National Statistics revisions, which also mean that Britain is no longer the worst performing economy in the G7, will...

Doesn’t really matter if the economy got bigger if it just means more money to corporations. The average person has certainly not seen growth. A mortage increase of 5% coupled with low wage increases, high food and fuel inflation left most people much worse off.

Then again, this unit of measure has always been a very poor one in countries with huge wealth gaps.

Whataboutism bs. Two wrongs don’t make a right.

whataboutism /ˌwɒtəˈbaʊtɪz(ə)m/ noun the technique or practice of responding to an accusation or difficult question by making a counter-accusation or raising a different issue.

Credit is definitely due and this is an amazing feat by India.

I haven’t bothered to discuss the other topic. Is there even any point when US issues are always on the front page here? I probably know more about US politics than my own country at this point.

Though of course you could also go there and take a jab at Americans. Let me know when you do so I can give you some support.

lasagna ,
@lasagna@programming.dev avatar

Whatever your reasons, that was whataboutism.

Expecting others to know what goes on in NASA discussions is moronic at best. That’s not the topic we are in. You didn’t even link it or reference it.

The Indian caste system is a humanitarian crisis. Would you rather westerners ignore it? There’s just no winning then, is there?

Raisin companies..WHY? why these wax type bags almost impossible to open or reseal? (lemmy.world)

Damn, it’s like they don’t want you to get at the raisins. There must be a better way… You either mutilate the bag and your fingers, or cut it with scissors (or a knife - not recommended lol) , either way can’t be resealed without additional apparatus

lasagna ,

I think the implication here is to take the knife and stab the scissors person.

The people who generally want to destroy a system and rebuild anew are usually clueless or have an ulterior motive.

While we are nowhere near the best we could be, we are also nowhere near the worst we have been in the past. Today is the result of an endless amount of people putting their effort, and often their lives, into improving society. This fight never ends.

lasagna ,
@lasagna@programming.dev avatar

In terms of the current systems we have in the west, yes. In terms of older revolutions no. It wasn’t intended to be a universal statement.

And I said generally. Not absolutely as your ‘all’ implies. The anchor for what I consider a person with excellent ideals and a beacon for humanity is MLK.

But you’re welcome to think of me as a moron if it helps you fulfil your outrage needs. Sleeping well at night is important.

Fukushima wastewater released into the ocean, China bans all Japanese seafood (www.reuters.com)

I don’t blame you for thinking this way. Since these aren’t your ideas.

I find that unlikely. AI is a subject much like space tech. It may not always be the giant it is now but it’s a baseline research countries will be conducting. Even if only as a means to defend themselves.

This sounds like a line from a David Tennant’s Doctor episode (probably the Master who said it) but I can’t be bothered checking.

lasagna ,

And that’s not the worst I have seen. Things like raisins are basically flavoured sugar.

lasagna ,
@lasagna@programming.dev avatar

Any flavour preferences?

lasagna ,
@lasagna@programming.dev avatar

The sugar we know isn’t that different. It’s essentially a dried plant too but with stuff removed.

Sure adding sugar is another big issue. But fruits aren’t that great for us either. Certainly better to eat an apple than drink apple juice though.

lasagna ,
@lasagna@programming.dev avatar

There is a whole lot of things that aren’t fresh but are good for us and better than fruits. Interesting statement.

lasagna ,
@lasagna@programming.dev avatar

Whole grains, lentils, frozen vegetables, plenty of meats, fish, eggs. These come to mind. In the perfect world I would give fruits a blanket stamp of approval (I know right, the self-importance). But almost nobody I know don’t already have plenty of sugar in their diet, which means fruits just compound that. That’s not to mention that selective breeding has made our fruits unnecessarily sweet (try the most popular apple types after not having any sweets for a few weeks).

Of course though, there are lots of fruits and many of them are great as long as they’re not processed (e.g. smoothies).

I generally just go for vegetables. Getting into them can be tough but once you do they’re a game changer for your palate.

Pedanticism aside, fruits are miles better than almost any sweets. So if you do manage to replace cake time with fruit time, congrats. That’s a huge step.

Welcome to the world of training datasets.

There are many ways to go about it, but for a limited number they’d probably use human analysts.

But in general, they’d put a lot more effort into a chunk of data and use that as the truth. It’s not a perfect method but it’s good enough.

lasagna ,
@lasagna@programming.dev avatar

It’s a sum with n from 1 to infinity. The first value with n=1 is 3/4, with n=2 it’s 3/16. And if you keep adding those terms as n goes to infinity it approaches 1 but never gets there.

Then if you look back at the meme, you could zoom in for infinity and always find a smaller square.

On top of how many? Still though, that’s insane. But with such an aged population it’s no wonder. Japan is in a vicious cycle and many other countries are getting there.

That’s the problem with averages vs medians. It completely overlooks wealth gap.

Here is an example. Moderna CEO made something like $500 million last year. If Moderna had 1000 employees, that would mean the company’s average employee pay is $500,000. And that’s before even adding their pay to this average.

lasagna ,

So many corporate cock gobblers commenting on this topic.

Parasites like Meta infiltrated our society, did their damn best to become a monopoly, currently steal from smaller businesses, lost personal data from shitloads of people, makes you their product, and even fueled instability in entire countries. Then people wonder why a government wants to use it to perhaps save a few more lives. It’s not like Meta is a company deserving of goodwill, so are you people getting a cent for this PR work or are you just suckers?

I have thought about it for a while but the US is basically in a cold civil war, with a significant chance of it becoming hot. And it looks very similar to their previous one. Neither side seem to have a charismatic enough leader.

It’s easy to look over the pond and think it’s none of our problem. But if the US falls to chaos a lot of other countries will follow suit. We can already see this influence in the UK and I’d argue many other EU countries. Russia probably saw this weakness, bet on it worsening much quicker than it did, but lost that bet (so far).

With that said, addressing the US as a whole no longer makes sense. I’m sure plenty, plenty of Americans see what is happening.

It’s unfortunate that one of the wealthiest people on this planet has taken the anti-democratic side, but it’s not the first or the last time in history a powerful man, rich beyond measure has done so.

Awww they’re just too shy to list the “we need bottomless profits for our investors” fee.

lasagna ,
@lasagna@programming.dev avatar

We have been shown over and over that investors will take profits during good times, build no resilience to handle disasters, invest the bare minimum back into infrastructure and jobs, drain the companies until bankruptcy arrives and taxpayers are left with the bill.

This could work with proper regulation. But regulation can be corrupted. Money corrupts. This industry involves lots of money. And so here we are.

When Jeremy Corbyn proposed to buy back utility companies here shortly before the energy crisis, people looked at him like a lunatic.

Because communist societies did better?

Maybe it’s time to admit that the biggest flaw in our systems is human nature.
