TerryMathews , in California governor vetoes bill offering unemployment pay to strikers

They’re not unemployed or underemployed by any common definition of those words. If California wants to support striking workers, great, but it shouldn’t be under these programs.

And realistically there’s no reason why this isn’t a Union problem to solve instead of a government one. Dues are paid for a reason.

Iwasondigg ,

I agree with you. Unions take money from workers and decide when to strike and not strike.

Mongostein ,

No, a union is made up of workers and they vote on whether or not to strike.

This bill would be like one good thing they do for workers, but of course they won’t because it would harm their “donors” who already have more than enough.

Catoblepas ,

lol.

thefartographer ,

Could you imagine part of your dues going to “long-term strike insurance?” Whichever financial institution figures that out won’t be playing 4D Chess, they’ll be wiping their ass on both sides of the board and then telling you that you get the first move.

Already does if you’re in an union.

some_guy OP ,

Hmm. You might have persuaded me. I’ll have to think about it and see.

However, the reason I came out in support of the idea is because our system is already dramatically rigged in favor of employers and I think there would be some justice in tipping the scales at a policy level.

But I’ll have to consider your points further before I can weigh things properly.

HelixDab2 , in Vigilante Pedophile Hunter Killed While Confronting Teens

he would often pose as a 15-year-old girl

Authorities say that Lee accused one of the teens at a local restaurant of being a pedophile

Let that sink in.

He accused a teen interested in an age-appropriate partner of being a pedophile. The age difference between the people that killed Lee, and the ‘victim’ Lee was pretending to be online is, at most, 4 years.

Fuck that dude. That kind of accusation wrecks lives.

Cethin ,

And as an adult man posing as a young girl, how can you possibly pose as specifically 15? Do you wear a sign with your age? I would bet he looked much older than 15. He probably looked older than these teens, because he was older than them. I don’t understand how you can be called a pedophile by being attracted to an adult man in women’s clothing unless he’s broadcasting his fake age somehow.

funkless_eck ,

“hi my name is Sally I’m 15 years old and I’m a huge Swiftie!”

You know, I just realized it was probably online and he only got shot after trying to get them to meet in person. I was thinking posing as a 15 year old girl meant in person and that’s when the attack happened. How stupid does this guy need to be to do this to other teenagers online?

treefrog , in Tom Hanks says AI version of him used in dental plan ad without his consent

Is using an actor’s likeness without their permission copyright infringement?

    anewbeginning ,

In Portugal the law forbids taking pictures of a person without consent in public places if the person is the main subject(it’s okay if you’re filming something else and the person happens to pass). I used to think it was too limiting a law, but now I think everyone will need this sort of legal protection.

    BraveSirZaphod ,
    @BraveSirZaphod@kbin.social avatar

Copyright is very strictly for creative works, which your likeness is not.

You might be able to stretch trademark law into applying here, but my understanding is that, at least at the federal level, there's not really much of a legal framework for dealing with this sort of stuff yet. Hopefully we'll get something soon.

    ogeist ,

Granted but impersonation is also a crime, is it not?

    BraveSirZaphod ,
    @BraveSirZaphod@kbin.social avatar

When used for fraud, absolutely. But it can also be used for parody and satire, which is strongly constitutionally protected as free speech.

A case like this is pretty open and shut since it's a blatant scam, but what if it was simply a fake Tom Hanks saying political statements he disagrees with? Would someone be able to argue parody? Probably not successfully, but there is a blurry line there. What if you simply had to include a disclaimer that it's AI generated? Would all content be allowable in that case?

    FatCrab ,

Likeness rights are state based and accordingly vary state to state. As usual with such things, you can just assume CA and NY is the “prevailing” law on it.

    Gradenko ,

There are rules in Hollywood that they can’t use an actors likeness without permission, but obviously the people who made this ad don’t care about that. I think this is an area the law doesn’t cover yet, although it should.

Although using fake Shemps was somewhat common throughout the 20th century, Screen Actors Guild contracts ban reproducing an actor’s likeness unless the original actor gave permission to do so, largely because of a lawsuit filed by Crispin Glover — following his replacement by Jeffrey Weissman in Back to the Future Part II — that determined that the method violates the original actor’s personality rights. The method continues to be used in cases, such as Shemp’s, where the original actor is deceased and permission from the deceased actor’s estate is granted.

Instead, now their debt will grow faster than their mandatory minimum payments.

Yes, my daughter and son did use the time to pay theirs off and in great careers.

    Personal responsibility? Commence the downvotes.

    kaitco ,

I mean…I still owe $8K and I spent the last three years paying directly to the principal as well. That said, I still hate this. Rather than being able to pay off in another year or so, it’s going to be closer to five years.

There’s options available. Like, how about a “step up” rather than just reopening the floodgates? Turn on the repayments, but not the interest. How about keep the interest off the last $20K if you’re not in the rears? Allow people to get a chance to make progress on their debts, or at least give an incentive on keeping the payments current.

A direct return to the status quo doesn’t get lenders their money in a time of rising rates, and it definitely doesn’t help those in debt nor the overall economy.

    jasory ,

“Allow people to get a chance”

They had 3 years… before that it was expected that they would make payments. Are you under the impression that everyone took out these loans thinking that they would never have to pay them back?

    SCB ,

So do you not understand who has the most trouble paying off this debt or what’s up?

Most high-risk student loan debt is held by college dropouts. People who went to college, it wasn’t for them (or life intervened), and they had to leave college - with the debt and without the benefit.

We as a society urge students to go to college because having a highly educated workforce is a good thing. This is an externality we created and it behooves us to resolve this externality socially.

The question of “personal responsibility” is, as is so often the case, irrelevant when discussing governance. You don’t govern for the best case scenario, you govern to address externalities.

    jasory ,

I like how you add information that I never critiqued. The point is that claiming that having 3 years of minimal payments is somehow not a reprieve from the previous circumstances, is utterly false.

If you want to argue for free university, then fine do it. But do it from the very beginning, don’t tack it on to some vaguely related initial comment.

“The question of personal responsibility is irrelevant in governance”

I actually agree, it’s where I think conservatives fail. Where liberals fail is ascribing moral blame for personal decisions on others. When someone makes a conscious personal decision to take risk, you can’t just blame society for when they individually have an unsatisfactory outcome. (It’s the same shit we get when we ask how society failed all those poor mass shooters).

Now of course this entire post was an individualistic claim, so maybe you can see why I didn’t start with a federal policy critique.

    Goo_bubbs ,

    Fuck off

    The_v ,

Personal responsibility gets all screwed up by math. I know school was a long time ago for you but you can use a calculator.

I graduated over 20 years ago. I paid for it all by myself as I was on my own at 17. My schools annual tuition/fees books was around 3.5K. Lodging/utilities/etc cost me $5,000 (roommates and no car). So a total of around $8.5K/year. I worked 25hrs per week at $7.25/hr for a gross income of around $9,400. I ended up $3K in debt. It took me 5 years to pay it off after I graduated. I started out at $27K.

My sons a sophomore this year at a the same school. Tuition is 9.7K lodging/utilities, etc around $14,000/year. So around $23.7K/year. Minimum wage in the state just went to $13.20. At 25hrs per week this is a gross income of $17K.

So my son would end up $30k+ in debt doing the exact same thing I did.

I start out my career making 27K with 3K in debt. Only 11% of my gross . Itwasn’t that hard to pay it off and was never a major concern.

My son would start out making around 45k/year with more than 30K in debt. 66% of his gross income.

    jasory ,

Nothing you said supported your thesis statement.

Personal responsibility is choosing to take on debt and then paying it off. The money amounts are not relevant, especially not a difference as small as you presented. Even the fact of it being a college loan doesn’t matter, any sort of investment borrowing would apply.

    AlecSadler ,

    You can fuck right off.
