You can’t defund education and not expect this outcome. If you want a functioning democracy, you need good and complete education for all citizens. I doubt there is any cheaper fix for this problem. An educated citizens is, on average, more resistant to bullshit. Education is the best investment a democracy can make.

When a cute and innocent individual get brutally murdered, people get sad. When it’s some guy in sub-Saharan Africa, that you hear similar reports of every day, it’s just not evoking much of a response. Probably that is what is going on.

Also, there are fewer dolphins than there are humans. From that perspective, it is even sadder.

There is this concept of ‘Us and them’, a in group and out group. In conflict it is often utilized to make your guys hate the other group and ‘dehumanize’ them so that you can prevent your guys directing sympathy towards the enemy. The other guys may have different language and culture and whatnot. Language is one of the best barriers for sympathy and is well recognized by the ones that use this to their advantage.

To a large extent, I think it is the same principles that prevent people from recognizing the suffering of individuals of other species.

We apply importance to the recognition of suffering so we can prevent it. I say we apply it to everyone.

Now, of course we can nit-pick and try to separate out who or what we apply sympathy to. You could designate some things as just automatons; such as ants, bacteria or even viruses. But I’m not gonna do that now.

Only recently did Sweden change rules that had every newborn be automatically registered with the Swedish church. The majority that are registered probably never practice, nor think about or visit a church, ever, in their lives, except maybe when they get married. I am not arguing that this happens everywhere, in the same way and is then set in stone forever. People in different places and times had different circumstances. Hence, they could have chosen to handled things differently. Cultural norms can also sometimes change over night. Look at the sexual revolution of the 60-70s for example.

I was trying to answer the question where this norm comes from. Not why this norm isn’t universal.

It seems obvious to me that a culture that have normalized breasts in everyday life, would also consider them less sexual in nature.

I wager the reason why people are not dueling each other, to solve their differences today, is that they simply have more options in how they go about it. I don’t think the survival rate of stab wounds factor in to the decision at all. We have a more accommodating legal system to turn to. One that serves more people than ever.

On another note. If you have to pay for your own medical cost and you live in a place like the USA; then you would probably want to die. If you live in a more civilised pace, then your fellow citizens will pay for your treatment and then promptly lock you up for wasting taxpayer money and endangering yourself and others, like a crazy person.
