Some evangelical pastors who regularly deliver sermons in support of school prayer have recently added a new twist — preaching that Christian traditions are needed in classrooms to stop children from identifying as transgender.

Or, in other words, without cult brainwashing, people might enjoy more freedom to be themselves.

TootSweet , in Over 60 percent of Gen Z have an anxiety disorder

I do have to wonder how these figures compare to older generations and to what extent underreporting due to stigmas around mental health could be corrected for between generations.

(I hope this already comes across, but I absolutely don’t mean to diminish the severity of the mental health problems faced by Gen Z or anyone else.)

Morcyphr ,

I, for one, did not take your comment in a bad light. I’m in my late 40s, and most of my peers that I’m comfortable with have anxiety or some other mental health issue, myself included. I’m not sure what generation classification I fall into, but it really doesn’t matter; it’s not a generation specific problem. I guess I don’t really have a point here. Maybe that it’s a problem of the times rather than DOB. Or I’d guess 15% of people don’t report.

Cryophilia ,

but I absolutely don’t mean to diminish the severity of the mental health problems faced by Gen Z

I, for one, do

Half of y’all are just saying you have mental issues because you’re in the “it’s not a phase, mom” tween phase.

Don’t get me wrong, 30% is still a staggering number, but 60% is just ridiculous. You’re fine. Chill tf out.

Grumpy ,

Article is bullshit anyway.

Their source doesn’t say 61% of Gen Z.

It only surveyed people who already have anxiety.

So it’s 61% of gen z with anxiety have a official anxiety diagnosis from a medical professional.

Goblin_Mode ,

You know a substantial number of Zoomers are not teenagers and haven’t been for many years yeah?

I’m not sure why it has to be a controversial take that the first generation to grow up with unfettered internet access and subsequently the most awareness of any and every global crisis, has a disproportionately large number of people with anxiety disorders. It’s not like it’s all or nothing either, you can have mild-moderate anxiety and still have a diagnosable disorder

Cryophilia ,

the first generation

How old exactly do you think millenials are?

Goblin_Mode ,

Younger folks in there late 20s older ones early 40s?

Meaning that the older half of the generation didn’t have internet access at all hours of the day during their childhood since home computers were a rarity until the mid nineties and those were generally shared with the whole family. Vs. Personal devices with internet access (first smartphones, Gen 1 Ipods, cheaper and more common home computers) which Gen Z children en mass have had since the early 2000s, which is when the oldest Gen Z’ers were 5-6.

There is Grey area in the few years where the generations changed and it’s basically indistinguishable but don’t even try to make the argument that someone born in 1986 had the same childhood as someone born in 2000

Cryophilia ,

Fine. Whatever. Let’s just say 90s kids then.

Point still stands. Gen z is not the first generation to grow up with computers.

Lazylazycat ,
@Lazylazycat@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, both my boomer parents 100% have anxiety with periods of uncontrollable panic attacks, but they refuse to acknowledge this is the case. There is definitely a stigma when talking about mental health for their generation.

Franzia , in Shouting at children can be as damaging as physical or sexual abuse, study says

I really hate the idea of parents. Like two people raise you and are responsible for you? Reading Brave New World as a kid, it took me until the very end to understand it as dystopian. I thought the idea of your parents being barely a part of the equation, just absent minded and high all the time? Great. Trusting school to raise you entirely using weird subliminal studying methods was actually an improvement. It is dystopian, but yeah I basically think this idea of an atomic family unit to be the most bizarre and selfish, anti-social bullshit. My parents didn’t let me know my relatives, were able to choose who I was friends with, where I was able to go. And all the while I’m reliant on them to not be kidnapped or hate crimed and to support my goals rather than force me to sit at home. The abuse just continues on and on. I will never be okay, I can only hope to make some cool art before I die. But that start of life decides for you whether you will be important or not.

barsoap ,

I can only hope to make some cool art before I die

urist ,

hugs

It’s terribly lonely, isn’t it? And so hard to explain to other people.

I remember when I was allowed to go to school (kindergarten). I was so excited to finally have friends and thought everyone was automatically my friend. That’s how it worked on TV, all the kids were friends with each other on the tv shows. Turns out that’s not how it works, and everyone had friends already from preschool. I was a permanent outsider from that point on, bullied. Struggled to make friends. When I finally did, we moved.

Nobody cared if I was lonely, only if my grades were good (and they were perfect), and the floors were mopped and the knickknacks were dusted weekly. Anything less was an hour long screaming session.

Nobody understands why I don’t want children. How do you raise children without a family?

mcmoor ,

Childhood is basically an Achilles heel for every single libertarian concept, and one which authoritarians exploit every single time. Until every single human is born with complete knowledge and faculty, this weakness will always prevent full individualistic freedom.

Kecessa ,

That’s the point, they’re making fun of all the news sources that can’t be arsed to give actual measures.

“The forest fire is as big as one million football fields!” means fuck all, but saying “Equivalent to a square 75km by 75km.” that’s a measure that actually means something.

drcobaltjedi ,

I remember the one that was half a girrafe tall. Which is apparently 2.14m which can also ve discribed as 1 Shaq

applebusch ,

What’s really going to fuck with you is that the fire is mostly confined to the boundaries, so a fire would be better measured by units of length. It’s not like you have 75 square kilometers simultaneously on fire, you’ve got 75 square kilometers burned, as in past tense, and some amount of the outline of that is currently on fire.

jarfil ,

How do you measure the perimeter on fire though? Do you go tree to tree, leaf to leaf, or trace the perimeter of each separate leaf?
