The reality is company’s like waymo are using their cars in SF precisely to harvest training data because they can’t finish it without real world data- the physical driving a car is easy; interacting with humans is not.
The general public is irrelevant here. If it weren't for the self driving car the hit and run wouldn't even have made the news. If it all this makes it worse for the driver.

Perhaps he’s implying that due to the second car it may obfuscate if the first driver’s actions would have been lethal or just left the person injured. He’d probably rather be tried for a hit and run resulting in injury than a hit and run resulting in a death.
One of my son’s coworkers was just killed in a similar incident. Woman hits a pedestrian, she freaks out and calls her boyfriend instead of emergency services, boyfriend arrives and runs over the injured pedestrian ensuring he was dead.
They are unsure which vehicle actually killed him.
So the truth is less they’re hiding it and more a combination of “we can’t see shit!” and “we have no idea how big or far away this thing would have to be to even begin looking for it!”
How is this going to work out legally for the girl and her baby? The girl isn’t even old enough to have her own bank account. Is she old enough to make parental decisions for her baby? Will the state take the baby away from her?
As terrible as it is, I wonder if that might be for the best.
From the many times I’ve seen this type of incident on the news (unfortunately), they usually place the baby in the care of relatives first if possible.
I think most people would at least consider it. Ultimately the child is innocent, and related to you by blood. Totally understandable that the mother may not want to raise a child like resulting from rape, but for the rest of the family the relationship to the child is the same as any other niece or cousin or whatever.
I feel terrible for agreeing with this, but it’s true. This poor little girl literally would have been less traumatized if someone just killed her parents.
I’m Gen X, not Gen Z, but I think it’s definitely a normal response to circumstances. Retirement has gone from “something I’m going to do someday” to “suddenly on the horizon.” However, my finances aren’t lining up with how much I need to have to retire. (I’m not alone. I saw an article recently that said under 20% of Gen X-ers have enough saved to retire.)
I’m definitely feeling anxious about this. I don’t want to be 80 and working a full time job so that I can pay my monthly bills because my bank account ran dry and the Boomers wiped out Social Security.
Good luck, the time to do that was when you were 18. At this point you’ll be fighting against the people who won’t benefit and the people who probably would benefit but certainly don’t want to pay for it.
