It takes decades for the soil to get invaded by bacteria, grasses, shrubs, trees… but eventually they will get there. With a little human help, it can get done even faster.

The warming process is blazing fast on geological scales, but for example sea levels are not expected to reach the top of the Statue of Liberty for at least another 500 years, so on a human scale it’s more than enough time to build whole cities, generate fertile top soil, or to organize scuba trips to the 9/11 memorial and put warning signs at sub tunnel entrances.

Shush ,

I am 32. I love my dad, he did his best. He was a good dad.

But I will probably never be able to forgive him for the times he shouted and yelled at me when I wasn’t a good kid. He went into fits of rage over mundane things like homework and failing school. I remember everything he said in those fits of rage. Every instance of it. And I definitely remember feeling terrified.

And will remember it until the day I die.

Even at 70 years old.

Raine_Wolf ,

This makes me sad tbh. I’m 21, and get flashbacks of my dad yelling at me, especially when someone yells at me irl. I was scared that I’d spend my life trying to get rid of them… now I wonder if that’s even possible

Shush ,

You might be able to do it if you’ll get closure by talking to your dad about it.

My dad is the type that is never wrong, never does anything bad, and therefore never apologizes. I brought this up a few times and he always say I exagerrate or those instances never happened. He will never own up to it.

Raine_Wolf ,

Unfortunately, both my parents are like that too. I went no contact for that reason, actually.

angrystego ,

It is possible to get closure anyway, eg. by not doing the same mistake yourself or by surrouding yourself with healthy relationships and realizing your parent is just a human being full of faults and you’re your own person. I have examples around me of people who were able to get over it finally and also of people who carried it with them their whole life (and I don’t blame them). The sad thing is how many people have such burden in the first place.

newthrowaway20 , in Shouting at children can be as damaging as physical or sexual abuse, study says

My first girlfriend in highschool had severe anxiety and was so incredibly quiet and shy. It was so tough cuz she was a genuinely sweet and caring person once she opened up to you. I was extremely surprised to learn her family was nothing like that when I met them. Until I met her dad, and he kept calling her an idiot, and stupid, and useless. Then I understood why she never wanted to say anything. Every time she opened her mouth she was criticized by her dad. This attitude towards your own kids is insanely damaging.

My anxiety also came from living with an abusive father. It sucks always second guessing yourself and never feeling safe and secure because your baseline is abuse.

JoMiran , (edited )
@JoMiran@lemmy.ml avatar

Honestly, I think that type of abuse is the worst because it cuts way deeper and leaves a permanent mark. I was yelled at (a lot), physically abused, and sexually abused, but I was always encouraged and supported. (Weird, I know. No, I’m not getting into it.). Because of the verbal support I received from my mother I was confident enough to stand up to my sexual and physical abusers even though she had not been able to as a child. I was also strong enough to break away from them and take on life solo after completely cutting them all off from my life (my mother had already passed away).

If you believe in yourself, you can fight. If you don’t, you might just sit there and take it. Psychological abuse is the cruelest and most damaging.

Yeah, I think an important thing parents need to do (apart from tearing down their kids for no reason) is differentiate DOING something dumb versus BEING dumb.

A comment my dad made long ago when I was young kinda stuck with me “For a kid who’s really smart you sure do some really dumb shit sometimes”

I don’t have a better solution, but “you’re smart enough to know you shouldn’t do that, so why did you?” feels a lot like the “you’re smart but you don’t apply yourself” I got a lot as a kid that always made me feel inadequate.

I fucked up sometimes, I didn’t do it on purpose and asking me why I did it as if I consciously made a decision to be wrong on purpose and wanting an explanation is basically asking me to either lie or say “i don’t know” which was never the “right answer.”

“An LLC took the house over and purchased it for $25,000 in March 2023.”

Scummy businesses doing crap like this need to stop.

It’s not a justification for what he did, but it is a reason why he did it.

Fisk400 ,

He was a sovereign citizen nutjob that stopped paying his mortgage. It sucks that an LLC bought it but that is coincidental to the story. If a nice family with 2 kids and a van bought the house they would also have evicted him.

girlfreddy ,

An LLC bought a house in America for $25,000 in 2023. That’s a big problem.

And seeing as you didn’t seem to pay attention the first time I will say it again … this is not a justification, but it is a reason.

Fisk400 ,

Ofcoarse it went cheap. It had a crazy gunman living in it. Only LLCs would ever dare to buy a house like that. Would you bid on a house where the old owner will definitely come back and murder your family?

FlowVoid ,

That’s like saying “This broken iPhone 13 sold on eBay for only $80. That’s a big problem.”

An LLC paid $25K because the bank owning the home was willing to sell it for $25K. And that’s not because the bank hated money. If someone else had been willing to pay more then it would have sold for more. That’s how foreclosure auctions work.

Foreclosed homes generally sell for a lot less because the occupant often causes a legal and physical mess and most home buyers are not interested in dealing with it.

JasSmith ,

The reason this happened is he stopped paying his taxes. Let's not confuse the cause and effect here. When he was confronted with the consequences of his actions, he chose to use violence.

Now we can have a discussion about whether "tax is theft," but that's immaterial to the fact that we do live in a society which charges taxes. One doesn't have the option to just opt out when they feel like it.

xNIBx ,

Noone should lose their primary residence, it should be protected(unless it is a mansion or something). Everyone should have a place to live. In Greece, primary residences used to have a lot of protections, so even if you were in debt, it would be very hard to lose your house. But thankfully, thanks to 15 years of austerity and "reforms" imposed by Troika and right wing governments, now you can easily lose your house, just like in the US.

What is the point of society, if people dont have a place to live.

JasSmith ,

Noone should lose their primary residence, it should be protected(unless it is a mansion or something)

Why? I can think of a thousand reasons one should lose their primary residence. Including serious and violent crime (prison), criminal proceeds (gang property), serious damage to a rental or social housing, restraining orders, sex offender registry, refusal to repay a home loan, and refusal to pay taxes. We all have to pay tax so we can pay for social services. If you don’t want to pay for social services you can move to a country which doesn’t support the poor. You can also vote for parties which strip social services. You don’t have the option to just stop paying your taxes.

xNIBx ,

Including serious and violent crime (prison), criminal proceeds (gang property), serious damage to a rental or social housing, restraining orders, sex offender registry, refusal to repay a home loan, and refusal to pay taxes

Some of these are VERY different than others.

We all have to pay tax so we can pay for social services

Is a society that deprives people their primary residence, a society that worth paying taxes? Because let's be real, 99.9% of the time that someone loses their home, it is because people cant afford to pay the bank. And almost always is because they are unemployed.

And you are ok with this? I dont understand this "omg, you have to pay the bank no matter what, otherwise it is a moral failure, so you deserve to lose your home". I wrote a relevant reply here

https://kbin.social/m/[email protected]/t/375186/Pittsburgh-active-shooter-What-we-know-about-the-suspect-William#entry-comment-1881269

JasSmith ,

You're attacking the concept of loans. Banks wouldn't offer loans if they couldn't claw back their investment for non-payment. If you want to eliminate loans then the people hit hardest will be those without capital.

FlowVoid ,

In Greece, if you stop paying rent then can you keep living in your apartment rent-free? Or will you be forced to find another home?

If people who stop paying rent are forced to find a new home, then so should people who stop paying their mortgage.

xNIBx ,

Greece has high homeownership. Rent is obviously different but even with rent, it was harder to get evicted. The difference is that with mortgage, you probably already paid a big chunk of money and that bank can afford to get delayed payments, while rent might be paid to an individual who doesnt have the same flexibility.

One of the main drives of the "reforms", is that now banks can easily sell their lower performing mortgages to hedge funds, etc since it will be easier to evict people and auction their houses.

Ultimately, all people have a need for shelter, it is a fundamental human right. So unless the state does something about this, people should have a place to stay. But would the bank do if they take over the house? Banks dont need houses, people do. Banks just love hoarding stuff.

If the state offered free basic housing, maybe we could allow capitalism to be more brutal. But the main reason the state isnt offering free housing(at least not to the extend it used to), is because of capitalism.

Now add the fact that the greek economy literally collapsed and everyone was unemployed, you can see why protecting the primary residence was so crucial in order to maintain social stability. But they dont care, now they are putting people's houses out on auctions. But not without resistance and resistance is working. And the banks know this, so they are more "willing" to negotiate.

Only in the land of the free, where everyone has guns(in order to oppose a TyRAniCaL gOvERmEnT), noone resists somehow. Individualism has brainrotted the americans to an extreme level. What would happen if your entire neighborhood came to your help? What would the cops do? Shoot everyone?

Well, maybe in the US they would. But in normal countries, a cop shooting anyone is almost certainly going to lead to the collapse of the government.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Greek_riots

A society that refuses to provide everyone with shelter and food, while it can afford it, is not a society that needs to continue existing.

FlowVoid ,

I don’t know how things work in Greece, but in the US the process of mortgage foreclosure and eviction takes way more time than evicting a renter who is no longer paying rent. In other words, the bank is already willing to wait longer than a landlord for a delinquent occupant to resume payments.

After foreclosure a bank does the exact same thing as a landlord: they look for a new occupant, i.e. offer housing to someone who needs it.

Banks most certainly do not “hoard” the property. In fact, banks are usually far more impatient than private individuals who want to sell their homes. The unwillingness of banks to hold real estate is another reason why they end up selling it at a discount.

Foggyfroggy ,

HamsterRage , in Biden worries ‘extreme’ supreme court can’t be relied on to uphold rule of law

To me, as a non-American, the most baffling thing is that everyone in the States just assumes, and accepts, that these appointed justices are going to rule according to some political bias.

That’s not the way it works in the rest of the free world. Judges are, by definition, trusted to be impartial interpreters of the law/constitution. That’s their role.

I live in Canada, and I’m vaguely familiar with some of the names of our Supreme Court justices, but I certainly don’t know their political leanings, nor do I care. Nor does any Canadian I know. That’s the way it’s supposed to be.

So as far as I can see, the problem isn’t that SCOTUS is stacked with Republicans, nor that it can be. The problem is that everyone seems to assume that this is the way it should be.

blazeknave ,

No we definitely don’t enjoy this, it’s the same reason we all love to say “eat the rich” and “it’s guillotine time” and then do absofuckinglutley nothing about it. No one wants to be the one to start something absolutely crazy, we all deep down believe that we can somehow fix this within the system as opposed to throwing Molotovs. :/

    snipvoid ,

It sounds like that belief is worth having a look at again.

    millie ,

Americans largely haven’t had much of a choice. In states where the laws are decent and political corruption isn’t heavily entrenched, things are alright and the system isn’t totally broken. But in places where it has? There’s less and less ability to vote in more reasonable laws.

The problems are systemic. The same states have shitty education systems, mass voter disenfranchisement of prisoners and anyone else they can justify taking the vote from, extensive gerrymandering, and every other form of corruption and political inefficiency. The major population centers take a very different approach, but they have to compete with these backward and broken states through an electoral system that skews the results in their favor.

Trying to take direct action outside of the official political framework is also problematic. In Europe you’ve got the benefit of an extremely high population density and a relatively small area regardless of which country you’re in. In the US everything is extremely spread out. The result is that protest is often not terribly effective. You might be able to shut down a couple of streets, but there’s no way you’re disturbing commerce for more than a single metropolitan area (of which there are many) at a time. It’s the same reason mass public transit runs into issues: we’re way too spread out for strategies that require high and comparatively uniform population density.

That doesn’t mean there’s no answer, but it does mean we’re going to have to get a little more creative.

    blazeknave ,

People take for granted what made Occupy special. We all rally around the fact that folks that normally wouldn’t recognize they’re all the 99% came together. But the real win was that it was everywhere all at once all the time.

Right, but compare the effort to the results. People were bussing in from all over the country, but like what actually changed?

    Zaktor ,

Same thing with the BLM protests. The largest protest movement in American history and… nothing changed. COVID kills a million plus Americans and all that changed is OSHA was banned from enforcing worker safety measures. No extra disease tracking, no countrywide efforts to improve air quality. We’re stuck in a quagmire where leaders just wait out problems rather than needing to address them.

    agent_flounder ,
    @agent_flounder@lemmy.one avatar

First of all, the Overton Window in America is skewed heavily right. So our centrist Democratic leaders are center right, our Republicans are what most countries would call regressive, extremist, authoritarian right wing, or even fascists.

See, the problem is rightwing extremism has been on a campaign since the civil rights era to take control of the country and undo the progress made since the 1960s.

They installed right wing media. They cut education and tampered with curricula. They gerrymandered. They instituted voter suppression. Their strategy culminated in the Federalist Society influencing the selection of Gorsuch and installation of right wing judges during the Trump administration.

The thing you have to know if you ever want to try and stop extremist, authoritarian, right wing regressives is that they do not hold the same ideals and morals as you and I. They do not play from the same playbook or follow the same rulebook.

They believe that “might makes right,” that any ends justify the means, that rules are enacted to protect them and their in group and punish their selected out group. They believe in many cases that their cause is justified by God.

And so any justice who adheres to such zealous principles will see no issue with finding a way to rule in the favor of their side. They may even go so far as to rule with weak or minimal justification. They will be a lot less likely to rule in an unbiased fashion.

My current opinion is that, so far, we have only seen rulings that fall into the “finding a way” category.

I think these justices will incrementally push the envelope on what they can get away with over the upcoming decades.

    Zink ,

“I think these justices will incrementally push the envelope on what they can get away with over the upcoming decades.”

    Zink ,

Agreed. I forgot to end my post with “but I fear that it can get so much worse before anything is done.”

I mean, as crappy as the court has been and all the confidence they’ve lost, they have essentially just cemented the role of Supreme Court justice as a politician instead of some honored impartial high quality person who stays above it all.

So they have blatantly pushed the Republican agenda, including things like Roe. But they could do so much more damage still.

    jasory ,

This patently false, compared to the world as a whole the US is quite liberal. Only in certain aspects, compared to certain European countries is the US “right-wing”. US for instance has way more liberal freedom of speech and religion than most countries. How many European countries have a state religion?

    blanketswithsmallpox ,

I doubt the Republican justices stay alive for much longer with the growing realization that political assassinations easily solve issues with the supreme court. It’s talked in hush tones a lot online because people act as if talking about the thing means you’re inviting it.

Tbh I’m genuinely surprised suicidal people on the left haven’t already taken one out. I was betting on it to happen shortly after Biden took presidency. It’s going to happen eventually if they keep ruling like shit. Revolutions are started by such political stunts.

Although I used to think all the crazy school shooters were eventually going to be lefties as well. Turns out they at least try to get medicated and fix themselves. Righties just go out murdering for apeshit reasons lol. Still, I know way more people on the left in serious depression and wanting to commit suicide. With the amount of fame MSM gives suicidal murderers… like before, I’m surprised it hasn’t already happened.

That’s not the way it works in the rest of the free world. Judges are, by definition, trusted to be impartial interpreters of the law/constitution. That’s their role.

The problem is that these judges are appointed through a political process, as about any government worker apparently is. This way you get a hyper politicized country, where even the job of librarian is no longer just a job, but an oppointment that should be strictly controlled.

    It’s absolutely baffling.

Your parliament just gave a nazi a standing ovation.

Yes. The supreme court is a political tool just like every other branch of government.

They are not impartial. They all have agendas.

I think Canada may not have this issue because there aren’t as many different cultures in Canada competing for dominance.

Even though your ruling class wants to extend its reach as much as possible, they acknowledge they’re still ruling over Canadians.

In the US, it’s “city people ruling over country” or “whites ruling over blacks” or “christians ruling over everything.” This means it’s acceptable and even encouraged for one group to abuse another.

This creates an “us vs. them” mentality because it really is us vs. them.

In a transcript of a June 21 conversation included in the new filing, Marcus threatened to upload a sexual video of his ex-wife to Pornhub, adding that he was prepared to do things that would “fck [Brittni’s] entire fcking world up,” such as send the video directly to her family members ― unless she continued to do his laundry.

    What in the absolute hell.

Well shit like this is exactly why people opposed this being a tort

    WHYAREWEALLCAPS ,

It’s an abuser controlling his victim. They will go to whatever lengths they think they need to. Nothing is too dark except maybe murder, and even that’s iffy.

Reading this story from NY post is crazy how they frame it. Seems like they leave out a ton of stuff and instead focus on the wives Halloween costume and claim they’re making fun of the “murder”

The court filing also includes s a photo of Noyola, Carpenter, and Brittni Silva “celebrating the murder” on Halloween 2022 by dressing up as characters from Handmaid’s Tale, a dystopian book and television series set in a near-future totalitarian state where birth control and abortions are illegal.
