Fun fact, if you turn a toaster sideways you can use them to make quesadillas.

This works about 90% of the time.

Atrichum ,

My partner did the same thing… with a quesadilla.

Fenrisulfir ,

Atrichum ,

Both, I think. Iirc the outside was a plastic shell that clipped to the metal toaster. It caught fire when the overfilled tortilla started dripping cheese onto the heating coil.

Huh? That guy is cool because of his lore and his attitude. We don’t care if he is male, female an alien or whatever. We don’t care if he won a medal, a diploma or a 5$ discount on a supermarket.

He is relevant because this guy went shooting into an olimpic event with a normal guy vibe wearing his prescription glasses and one hand in the pocket, while other olimpic teams wear all kind of complex sighting aparatus for this events. Plus his story lore of how he became olimpic shooter is hilarious.

His teamate could be Erdogan, Beyonce, Taylor Swift. NOT RELEVANT.

So what? He has a female in his team? Okay.

brainw0rms ,
@brainw0rms@hexbear.net avatar
SoJB ,

It was literally a team event and one of the things that makes the bit funny is how “he” won silver. In fact, that’s the entire thing this story hinges on, performing well.

In a team event.

Nice self-reporting your misogyny though, and I’m sorry your mind fails to draw a single independent conclusion from this meme.

This isn’t me being misogynistic but had his teammate done better they’d have won gold, she brought the score down, he actually shot better than both of the winners.

This is not to say she wasn’t qualified for this, in fact I believe her previous track record is better than his

JackbyDev , (edited )

When I shot in highschool it was a team event while also individual. So your team’s score is the summation of the individuals scores (pre-finals).

(Finals is like an extra portion for the top few competitors. Your score in finals is added and that’s your total. It was added to make the sport more spectator friendly. When I shot it was just 10 extra shots but shortly after I stopped it was changed to top 8 shooting one shot at a time and lowest shot gets eliminated. I believe this is still the case based on pictures I saw of the two finalists shooting side by side alone.)

So it’s possible he won silver as individual and the team didn’t win or also got silver. I haven’t actually looked into the Olympic rules or results but that’s how it was when I shot competitively.

Edit: Looks like 10 meter air pistol categories individual men, individual women, and mixed team are all run at different times. So it was only as a team that they won silver. I don’t know about the individual results of the team competition, but regardless it wouldn’t have earned a medal. en.wikipedia.org/…/Shooting_at_the_2024_Summer_Ol…

WorkIsSlow ,

I thought it was just his normal guy vibe without the shooting glasses. Pretty sure the hand in the pocket is common and I haven’t heard anything about a hilarious back story.

Mycatiskai ,

First I read about it from a comment was that he was trying to prove his Ex-Wife wrong that he can make something of himself. But it didn’t mention is that he joined the Gendarmerie of Turkey, which is a police type force in rural areas and other places in the country.

I don’t want to lower his achievements but he’s just a cop who obviously did well in his shooting practice and turned that into a silver medal. He isn’t a hitman like the memes are saying.

lunarul ,

Gendarmerie is part of the military, higher than police. And he was a sergeant. He’s part of both the national team and the national army team.

menemen ,
@menemen@lemmy.world avatar

It is not really “higher” than police and it is not regular military. The gendarmerie in Turkey is responsible for policing outside cities, they are part of the military, but they are subordinate to the interior ministry during peace times (regular military answers to the defence ministry).

lunarul ,

Compared to what it takes to become a policeman in the US, it’s definitely a higher level of training. Hard to find a direct US equivalent.

menemen ,
@menemen@lemmy.world avatar

Don’t know about the police. I was comparing inside turkey, where there is the Police for urban areas and the Jandarma (Gendarmerie) for rural areas.

He has a female in his team?

I know this is increasingly accepted, but ‘female’ is actually an adjective. You could say ‘has a female athlete’ or even just ‘has a lady’, but the current wording is a bit off.

ulterno ,
@ulterno@lemmy.kde.social avatar
HereIAm ,

Normally “female” is more used in clinical settings or about not-human animals. One reason it gives off incel energy is it reduces a person to what genitals they have.

ulterno , (edited )
@ulterno@lemmy.kde.social avatar

reduces a person to what genitals they have

Fine by me, specially in this case.

So do all other categorisation terms, which on top of that, group them with others in the same category and help the people who’d blame everything on a category of people. Specially the “-ism” -> “-ist” categorisations.

I’d rather have scientific categorisation than a social one, that would enable dialogues such as:
A: Define a “woman”, you senator/judge/other public personality.
B: … I think I am not qualified to … more gibberish … ( because I need to be politically correct).

And that’s probably why people prefer this choice of words. To prevent the “Cis vs Trans - you dare assume their gender” bullies from finding them as easy prey. And over time, it becomes second nature.

I feel like, in this case OC (original commenter) is trying to admit that they don’t know the “female” as a person (neither do they know anything about the relationship between the 2) and claiming that the clout is just based on her being a female.
Whether or not that is accurate, OC does get the point across.

Now the following is just my agenda, but I think we ought not to give humans all the privilege of respect. It is the person, that we need to give that to. That way, we, as a civilisation, will be ready just in case another species, capable of being a person, comes up, whether terrestrial or otherwise.

emergencyfood ,

I know this is increasingly accepted, but …

To be fair, in English most adjectives can also be used as nouns. I suppose I should have said that in this context, using it as an adjective is inappropriate.

So, I watched that third link in its entirety. It was pretty interesting. I think the core idea is that NK isn’t some absolutely insane bizarro land, which I actually agreed with beforehand. It did not disprove the fact that NK is an authoritarian dictatorship. The only thing it did prove (which again, I knew about beforehand) is that western media likes to exaggerate the faults to hyperbolic levels. I honestly think that the average north korean would live a better life without the Kim family (or any other family regime) ruling over them. This doesn’t mean that they force people to have specific hairstyles at gunpoint or execute politicians for slouching during speeches (as the video joked about), but they still direct a large portion of the states wealth towards friends and family.

I think you should really honestly consider the fact that two wrongs don’t make a right. NK and the USA do terrible things. Instead of litigating which one is worse, maybe we should focus on how to make better alternatives, like you’ve done with this alternative to Reddit.

alcoholicorn ,

The people who manage to escape NK are a pretty good source

Journalists pay defectors for stories. No effort is made to verify anything they say. This practice is considered wildly unethical in any other context. They’re not credible. But just the content should be enough, do you really think North Koreans pull trains from city to city? That the children eat rats who eat children? That they build fake towns with fake schools, presumably the fields are tended by fake farmers?

It’s perfectly possible for both the US and NK to be in the wrong.

So why aren’t you asking why the US is allowed to participate when they commit far worse atrocities?

Barbarian ,
@Barbarian@sh.itjust.works avatar

To all of those stories, they seem like strawmen. I’ve not heard anything that ridiculous. Just that NK is an authoritarian regime that rewards friends and family of the regime at the expense of the well being of the populace. Kinda like a red veneer over Saudi Arabia, similar system.

So why aren’t you asking why the US is allowed to participate when they commit far worse atrocities?

I didn’t even ask why NK isn’t allowed to participate. Why are you giving me an argument I didn’t make?

alcoholicorn ,

To all of those stories, they seem like strawmen.

nvm then, I’d assumed you were referring to those absurd stories that get republished by otherwise reputable news sources every few months.

NauticalNoodle ,

Correct

hoch ,

It looks like warmongering actually played a part in this year’s decision:

The sanctions against those responsible for the war, the Russian and Belarusian states and governments, remain in place for the Olympic Games Paris 2024. This means, in particular, that:

No flag, anthem, colours or any other identifications whatsoever of Russia or Belarus will be displayed at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 in any official venue or any official function.

No Russian or Belarusian government or state officials will be invited to or accredited for the Olympic Games Paris 2024.

Olympic page the above text was taken from

itslilith ,

If democratic government was a requirement half the countries wouldn’t be allowed in. The Olympic Truce just says that countries that are at war may not participate. And, looking at Israel, even that is loosely enforced
