We talking about Tyson dumping 18.5 billion gallons of contaminated wastewater in 2022?
This toxic stew includes animal parts and byproducts like blood and feces, pathogens like E. coli and Enterococcus, and nitrogen and phosphorus that can deplete oxygen in bodies of water.
These are all general opinion statements. There aren’t any verifiable facts like, “on this date at a meeting with x we discussed how AI project y is myopic and non-user-centered.”
Some companies have you sign things after leaving.
Obviously, when you start laying people off, or do stupid shit like stack ranking, some people are going to walk out and just blab about all the dumb shit your employer does/did - and they’re heroes for doing so.
I think that Amazon and Meta (where this is a known practice) do both. I’ve not signed anything in tech that stops me talking about internal company practices or any work that might have resulted in “voluntary” dismissal, but others in these companies that do the Jack Walsh thing and fire their employees do…
What are they gonna do if you refuse to sign? Fire you?
If this guy voluntarily left, then he wasn’t getting a severance package that they could withhold (and on that note, this is a good reason to include involuntary severence in your employment contract, if you can negotiate it).
For many, it’s the severance offered that makes them sign. If you’re about to lose your job, a few months pay, and free relocation back home if your visa is due to be cancelled is likely enough to make you sign something.
I’m not condoning it, at all. I think the practice is fucking disgusting, and have seen it wreck lives, but it’s a reality in many tech companies, including Google under Sundar.
My understanding is that while you’re 100% being terminated (and are ineligible for rehire) what you sign indicates that you’re actually volunteering to resign.
For more info on it, look up Amazon’s Focus and Pivot programs.
Laws will differ in different places, but I’m familiar with 3 categories of terminations:
With cause (firing)
Without cause (layoff)
Voluntary (quitting)
When someone is terminated with cause or quits, they are not entitled to severance and they do not collect unemployment insurance. When someone is laid off, the employer is obligated to pay a severence package.
The Amazon focus and pivot program is interesting. That definitely looks like they’re bribing low performers to quit, and I smell an ulterior motive. Maybe it’s to get them to sign an NDA but I feel like it’s to avoid wrongful dismissed lawsuits. Although I suppose why not both?
They are actually built like that, but they have a built-in projector that makes them appear flat to an outside observer. When they crash the projector usually breaks, which is why they then look bent.
Big dumb corporation doing big dumb corporation stuff. It’s so big it can’t behave coherently anymore. But it’s also so big that it acts like a black hole that sucks all the money towards itself regardless of how stupid, unproductive and wasteful it is being.
Also screw long term profitability, make the graph quickly go up by firing people to get your bonus, by the time it comes back to really bite the company in the ass, you will have golden-parachuted away already.
The problem with trying to observe a vacation is the amount of light involved. Experiments have shown that applying the necessary amount of light to render the vacation observable often results in the whole thing being called off anyway.
I mean… dunno about you, but I look my best with that sweet patina of sweat glistening on my forehead, a drop of drool meandering towards my chin, and a hot load in my drawers.
I may not remember some nights, but I rest easy knowing that I’m a damn fine lookin drunk. Too much booze also makes me smell amazing.
Oh, and I’m a great drunk cook too. You can absolutely trust me with that knife.
Someone should make a ROM hack where Pokémon centres charge a game-world fee equivalent to what a person would pay for healthcare for serious injuries in the US, with insurance and loan sharks.
Arceusism is the state religion and others are barely tolerated.
Gyms are privatized and cost per attempt.
Pokemon sweatshops.
PC access is a freemiun model where you get the first 5 for free, but beyond that you have to pay for Pokestorage+ and pay monthly. Also pokes come out hating you so pretty sure they getting abused. And occasionally pokes get lost.
I think that was literally a plot point in one of the earlier games or anime? That one will be easy to adapt, just make Team Rocket the heroes for being shrewd businesspeople and you the villain for daring to question the will of the free market.
It’s just an attempt to put the requirement for action back on you. They’re hoping you’ll get busy and forget about it, or not have a camera, or anything else that’ll stop the claim.
Crap games apart (LOL is a good name for it), the only reason because Windows is better for games is that most games in the market are Windows only, no other reasons. But this is currently changing with more and more games also for Linux. Worst gaming platform is still Apple.
And the reason a lot of games are made for windows: nvidia helps companies with testing and development support, but funnily enough they help with testing nvidia hardware, and only on Windows.
I guess they only do Windows to try to keeo development costs of the drivers down? But I’m not sure.
They’ll help you develop and test your AI stuff on Linux but not Windows (I don’t think… Completely different team of engineers).
I’m wondering what will happen when loads of games have built-in generative AI… Will these two paths finally cross and finally give us Linux folks Nvidia (graphics) drivers that are actually good? 🤔
Not entirely correct, the simple reason is called “money”. Windows is by far the most used platform in the world, because of this also the most potential users of the gaming industry. Linux has almost 100 different distros and much of these don’t accept other than opensource apps in its repository and only very few modern games are (2?..3?), there isn’t much more than FPS and arena shooters with graphics of 20 years ago, side scrollers and other with pixelgraphics, crappy RPG 2 D or with isometric view, few exceptions apart, like the above mencioned The Dark Mod, despite that it isn’t full OpenSource because of some non-free art assets which included and for this is tecnically only freeware and for sure for this, not in most of the repositories. Making games is a lot of work and there are not much idealistic game devs out there which will make a modern game for buy me a coffee. That is the main problem because Windows is still the best platform for games and not for tecnical reasons.
There’s FOSS* client for Oldschool Runescape, called Runelite ;)
*some proprietary blobs because Jamflex didn’t like that RL devs were providing source code for the reverse engineered bits from the official java client
Yes, there are some FOSS clients for games, but like in FreeDoom and others, they need the original gamefiles to work. Apart, none of the FOSS games have graphics which are up-to date for modern PC, because of this the mencioned The Dark Mod is an excepcion, it’s not a client or front end, but a standalone game, in quality and graphics similar to current commercial games.
If I ever get off my ass and make that game I am going to rub my nipples and respond every time a mac user sends in a support ticket asking why their game isn’t working with “because it’s a mac”
We're always told the people at the bottom rung of society, the people doing "entry level" jobs just need to work harder and harder to earn a proper living...
But how does that work really? Unlike a lot of high level jobs, none of these jobs just exist for the sake of existing, most of these "entry level" jobs are essential to society (we saw that much during the pandemic).
Somebody has to do them or society just doesn't work, so don't the people doing these literally essential jobs deserve to be paid a fair living wage? They're working just as hard as the people above them, yet they're paid peanuts in comparison
Id never worked harder than when I was working retail as a HS student. And the worst part is interacting with assholes who thought you were beneath them, which I think it’s what this meme underlines.
was lucky to be well off to get an education which provided a way to land a cushy SW job. Mentally stressful at times sure, but I didn’t have to take shit from somebody and worry if I could afford my next meal. And I see the same ego on the other side here, where people sneer or condescend towards min wage workers.
So many things we take for granted are just down to luck, or lack thereof.
Now I don’t know how it would feel to be wealthy. Where money ceases to be something you need to think about on a day to day basis, but I think that’s when it just becomes a status symbol, and you have to make more only because the Jones bought their 4th yacht, so of course you can’t be seen with less than that! It never ends, and that’s why I think rich-ass capitalists can never have enough, because in their mind the competition never ends and no amount is ever enough.
The hardest part of establishing a socialist state isn’t dealing with material conditions… it’s dealing with the US constantly trying to overthrow it even if you’re on the other side of the planet.
