Wayland? 🥺

psmgx ,

systemd?

Jordan_U ,

Development of the Wayland specification and multiple Wayland compositors is funded by the X.org foundation, and done largely by current and former Xorg developers / maintainers.

So it still works!

GolfNovemberUniform ,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

I tried Wayland on 2 machines and got major issues on both so no thanks. It’s a nice thing for multi-monitor setups though

herrcaptain ,

Is that with an Nvidia GPU? Apparently that can be problematic in its current state. Wayland on my AMD card has been basically flawless, but your mileage may vary.

Liome ,
@Liome@pawb.social avatar

Can confirm, I was running GTX 1070 and Wayland was unusable, after hopping to AMD it is flawless.

herrcaptain ,

Yeah - after posting my comment I legit double checked that I was indeed running Wayland. I’ve heard so many people complain about its instability that I started to doubt myself. Sure enough, it’s Wayland and it’s been an amazing experience thus far. Daily use for work and browsing is basically flawless, and most games seem to run as good or better than they did under Windows 11.

GolfNovemberUniform ,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

One of the machines had hybrid AMD APU+AMD GPU and the other one had Intel integrated graphics

herrcaptain ,

Very weird then! Oh well, I’m sure X11 will stick around long into when Wayland works on all systems.

zongor ,
@zongor@hexbear.net avatar

Wayland is good, it is nice to be able to forward X apps over ssh though

aldalire ,

how tho?

zongor ,
@zongor@hexbear.net avatar

‘ssh -X’ will do x11 forwarding if the config on the remote system is set up properly

oscardejarjayes ,
@oscardejarjayes@hexbear.net avatar

You could use waypipe with wayland. There’s also a RemoteDesktop xdg-portal, but it’s implementation is a bit spotty

I’m a millennial. I love my zoomer comrades. Even if I don’t understand their stuff, I still respect their whole thing and the fact that they’re inheriting a different world with different experiences than what I did, which is really all my generation was ever asking for and never received. I feel more like a significantly older sibling to gen z than a do an entire generational step older. We generally agree on a lot of the same shit. They’re paying more attention to current events than I was when I was younger, and unfortunately it’s kinda more necessary for them to because we didn’t do a good enough job at that until maybe 5-10 years ago.

Sorry if I’m wrong and I’m the exception rather than the rule. Keep zoomin’, zoomers 🤙

Well ya, it’s absolutely pathetic for Americans to strut around acting like they’re an authority on how society should operate when theirs is an absolute dumpster fire unless you’re making 500k/yr+.

Does it hurt when this is pointed out or something? If you’re tired of it, maybe stop trying to swing your tiny little dick around and people won’t have to constantly tell you to put it back in your pants.

doingless ,

Says the continent that can’t go more than a few generations without degenerating into authoritarian states and widespread war.

LoveSausage ,

You mean like the US installed puppet regimes all over the world 24/7 since ww2? Or the constant wars you are involved in? Or do you just mean the civil war n? Or perhaps it’s easier to controll the land after the genocide perhaps? Really? USAian talking about authoritan States and widespread war… Not like Europe got a good track record but it’s kind of lacking on the imperialism front compared.

Scribbd ,

Not to mention the current degradation of American Freedoms™, and the constant abuse of the American Election System™ by certain actors.

doingless ,

The degradation of American freedoms and the abuse of our election system is definitely a both sides, where many things aren’t. Neither party wants to lose power by opening up ranked choice or modern election systems and both parties prefer the power of the state over the power of the people.

doingless ,

The US hasn’t had a domestic war since the civil war. How many wars has Europe had domestically since then? Hmmm.

US citizens are powerless to the machine that was built generations ago. We vote between corporate funded warhawks or more liberal corporate funded warhawks. Personally I like the idea of not helping Europe much in future wars, we have more than enough problems of our own. But as much as Europeans hate America for their military prowess, I hate us for it too because we’re all paying for it in human suffering.

We’re policing the world and neglecting our people and it isn’t sustainable. If you need to fight for freedom, start your own military dominance. But fuck war. Americans mostly just want to live peaceful lives but bring a land war here and it’ll get lit.

smooth_tea ,

The US hasn’t had a domestic war since the civil war. How many wars has Europe had domestically since then? Hmmm.

The US is a country, Europe is not, so “domestic” is a misnomer and the comparison doesn’t hold up. The issues Europe had with wars are a result of complex regional and historical issues, those things don’t really exist in the US because it is too homogenous on one side and too much of a military might to challenge on the other, not to mention geographically isolated.

You really need to reach to make Europe look like the bad guy when it comes to wars, not in the least because the US takes other countries to war all the time to throw it’s weight around and establish dominance.

foo ,

Don’t you feel that’s a bit rich coming from the country who started or been at the centre of most of the wars for the last 80?

vivadanang ,

would add baking soda but yeah, it gets the funk out.

eclectic_electron ,

The baking soda will just neutralize the vinegar though? And you’ll get salt water? Vinegar is good at getting smells out though.

PullUpCircuit ,

I personally use the vinegar instead, but one or another will do the trick.

But like you said, both at once make salt water, which is less effective at killing germs and removing funk.

vivadanang ,

it reacts. I can’t explain the precise chemistry behind the reaction, but it breaks organic deposits / stains / crud and actually gets funky smells out of the wash. works better than any off the shelf product I’ve tried.

vivadanang ,

not sure on the precise chemistry involved in the reaction, but it works like a charm for getting stains and smells out of laundry, and takes smells out of counters etc. w/o using harsh chemicals. you should give it a try.

superduperenigma , in dining with moomin daddy

I feel like that just draws an unnecessary amount of attention to the fact that you’re dining alone. Nothing wrong with dining alone, but I’d feel awkward if the staff were trying to “cover up” the fact that I’m alone.

atx_aquarian ,
@atx_aquarian@lemmy.world avatar

There’s one restaurant in my area that has some tables for one. I noticed that, for me, those do feel more complete when I’m dining alone. Instead of extra, conspicuously empty seats around the rest of the table, there’s a table clearly designed for one diner to just enjoy a good meal.

And it’s not enough to have tables with only one chair. If such a table is amidst larger-party tables, I think it still makes the other usual places at the table feel abnormally empty. What makes tables for one feel “right” has something to do with their placement in the restaurant (so as not to feel odd or exceptional), their orientation (so as not to face the diner towards someone else’s gaze–unless mingling is the goal), and then the size and number of seats.

It’s probably difficult for some restaurants to accommodate solo diners due to a need for density, but when a restaurant might have some space that would otherwise not be all that useful (like a little extra space between a planter divider and a walkway, where larger tables just wouldn’t fit), it is an opportunity to attract solo diners who want to enjoy the solo experience of focusing on the meal and their own thoughts rather than bar seating. (And, on that topic, I think it’s becoming more normal for people to not want alcohol displayed prominently in front of them when they’re really just looking for a nice meal.)

Andrew15_5 ,
@Andrew15_5@mander.xyz avatar

They are not covering up, they are trying to make you comfortable. If you don’t wanna, just ask.

kewwwi OP ,

I don’t think the headline here is true, but even so they aren’t “covering up” anything, they’re giving you a plushie so you’d feel less alone, or more comfortable, eating alone at their restaurant. Surely you could decline, but why eat at a moomin restaurant if you’re gonna decline the plushie?

Got a new boss once my company merged. First round table meeting and he starts attacking our imaging team for not working fast enough, claiming all received requests should and could be boxed and shipped within 48 hours of being received.

After the imaging team kinda fumbled their words, I stepped in and just flat out said that is not true, not of what he said was true. Then explained why. Having to break it down for him that these are office tech workers that support one of the largest teams with the highest turnovers. They don’t have the luxury of sitting down and doing nothing but one thing consistently.

The guys hasn’t spoken to me in almost 2 years sense. Other than “hey I’m sick, hey I’m going on PTO, e.t.c.” he passively snaps at me if I speak up in team meetings now. It’s fuckin hilarious.

If you still use Amazon, get the CamelCamelCamel addon. It shows you a graph of how the price of an item has changed, so you can see if a sale is really a discount of just one of these fake “sales”.

Easy to use, doesn’t need an account, doesn’t even need to be installed as an extension. Works for non-US amazon.
