I used to have trust in the peer review process, thinking this is why it takes months or years for a paper to get published. Are you telling me it’s not real?

bleistift2 ,

And we thought boomers reading shit off Facebook was bad. Now they have AI feeding it to them.

bleistift2 ,

After watching Lower Decks for 3 seasons and going back to TOS, I’m thinking about watching some of the middle entries. What are some of the meaningful differences between them. In other words: What should I watch?

bleistift2 ,

It also starts disappearing from Amazon around season 3… if we’re talking Lower Decks.

bleistift2 ,

Where do these random medieval drawings come from? And who finds them?

Star Trek: Day of Blood - Shaxs' Best Day nominated for 2024 Eisner Award (startrek.website)

The 2024 Eisner awards for the comics industry announced the nominees a couple days ago, and the Day of Blood tie-in issue, Shaxs’ Best Day by Ryan North and Derek Charm is among the nominees for Best Single Issue/One-shot....

bleistift2 ,

I didn’t know there was a comic series. I guess I’ll read that since Amazon pulled their animated series off of Prime.

bleistift2 ,

In Germany you can always tell if a historic thing was good or bad by whether it started or ended in 1933.

bleistift2 ,

the amount that I was depositing was bellow the minimum balance

So they charged you not for owing them money, but for being too poor to have an account with them?

bleistift2 ,

Technically, the oath says not to ever perform an abortion.

I will not give to a woman a pessary to cause abortion.

Though there may be a loophole, since Hippocrates seems to acknowledge the existence of surgeons (“I will not use the knife, […] but I will give place to such as are craftsmen therein” ), and his oath doesn’t seem to apply to them.

‘How does one make their property “private”?’ As opposed to public, as it seems to be now? Dude, you’re paying taxes because your property is private.

bleistift2 ,

no or fewer children

So… they killed other people’s children?

bleistift2 ,

Remember, kids, that pet’s names are often used for passwords. Don’t share sensitive information.

bleistift2 ,

It takes trust to give all your password to a piece of software. With all the leaks on the news can you blame them? For people with multiple devices an offline password manager is unwieldy. And self-hosting an online password manager is beyond the capabilities of most.

bleistift2 ,

I used to think people stay years on death row. Are you saying you can stay morbidly obese on prison food?

bleistift2 ,

TIL I learned these things are called balloons.

bleistift2 ,

At least the punctuation made sense. I could follow the story.

bleistift2 ,

It’s interesting that even on lemmy people aren’t so open-minded to give eating insects a chance.

bleistift2 ,

We cannot stop collecting data about you because collecting the datum that you want to stop having your data collected failed.

I wonder if the situation in Europe is different, where such bullshit is illegal.

bleistift2 ,

That’s pressure.

bleistift2 ,

no man ask for.

bleistift2 ,

Why km/h (or mph) and not ft/year? Because the numbers have a nicer magnitude then.

bleistift2 ,

I feel like I should’ve spotted that… they’re the same units. 🤦

bleistift2 ,

Meanwhile every other person:

gets shot for not following an officer’s orders in .5 seconds

bleistift2 ,

I don’t see evidence that Hamas attacked the base, either. Is a hole in a tent and a picture of a tank that could be taken anywhere there is sand supposed to be evidence?

bleistift2 ,

Or – just a thought – you’re reasonably confident that the shit you wrote actually works.

bleistift2 ,

I love how every sovcit post here could be posted to !aneurysmposting

bleistift2 ,

Judging by eye on the map projection OpenStreetMap uses, the direct line between Japan and Hawaii is about one quarter of the westbound straight line between Japan and Hawaii.

bleistift2 ,

Isn’t that also the shorter route, because you’re circling the Earth where it has less circumference?

Also the North Atlantic Tracks are there. Might also play a role.

oil and cyanide were among the 371m lb of pollutants

Why does a food producer even have these things?

Every driver you could possibly need for any hardware in the last 20 years? This is a live CD and is expected to just work no matter what you’re running it on.

Edit: Also, of course, every program you might need to usefully test-drive a distro, like office apps, media players, image viewers, browser, email client, and a myriad more. Now that I’ve said it I find 6GB remarkably small.

bleistift2 ,

I’m not sure… ants walk really far. Think of how long it takes us to get human children to the point where they can count to 1000. Do ants just hatch with a sense of numbers?

bleistift2 ,

can write 260 w/p on his own machine, will not find the escape key on any other

I swear, when I need to touch other people’s computers, I can’t get them to believe me that I program for a living.

bleistift2 ,

That’s why I’m sticking to Windows at work even though I hate it. I couldn’t stand the glares of the others when I fail to fix even a noob distro.

bleistift2 ,

The website is quite tight-lipped regarding features. What’s a ‘smart playlist’?

bleistift2 ,

The tube drivers can go fuck themselves. Ask the child laborers who dig up sulfur with their bare hands in an active volcano!

There’s always someone worse off. That doesn’t mean the second-to-last doesn’t deserve better.

What're some of the dumbest things you've done to yourself in Linux?

I’m working on a some materials for a class wherein I’ll be teaching some young, wide-eyed Windows nerds about Linux and we’re including a section we’re calling “foot guns”. Basically it’s ways you might shoot yourself in the foot while meddling with your newfound Linux powers....

bleistift2 ,

I’m not sure anymore how I got into a state where that was necessary, but do keep a reference around for how to boot Linux or Windows from the Grub command line.

bleistift2 ,

Could someone enlighten me what Deus Ex is about without spoiling more than two hours of gameplay?

bleistift2 ,

It’s conceivable as an adventure trip or if a Portuguese wanted to see Northern lights. But I guess the trip NY–LA is way more common.

The States’ population centers are on the far edges of the continent. That’s not the case in Europe, where they’re more evenly distributed.

bleistift2 ,

My respect for biologist vanished after I compared the posters the chemist had on their floor with the biologists’.

Chemist: We found a new material that can replace the <can’t remember anymore> and cut carbon emissions in half.

Biologists: Hey, we found a plant.

bleistift2 ,

The guy who was too lazy to clean his dishes before he went on vacation isn’t the best example of a biologist. You know, Pasteur and Koch existed, too.

bleistift2 ,

You have control over whether you eat pork or tofu, don’t you? You have control over whether you buy a new iPhone or a used FairPhone, don’t you? You have control over whether you plan a trip via airplane or via train, don’t you?

bleistift2 , (edited )

Why not both? Companies that peel bananas and wrap them in plastic for sale are garbage companies. And people who buy them are garbage people.

bleistift2 ,

NY–LA via Amtrak: $291. Greyhound, a bus company: $139

bleistift2 ,

So you’re telling me that there are people who cannot peel a banana, but who can simultaneously peel the plastic off a container and then eat the banana?

bleistift2 ,

I did provide the price for a train ticket that is significantly cheaper than Match!!’s “thousands of dollars”, didn’t I?

bleistift2 ,

You vastly underestimate the tolerance of an average user who barely knows their way around a web browser and Word.
