For All Mankind, Severance, Silo, Slow Horses, Foundation, Pachinko (my personal favourite), I could go on.

Apple TV+ may not have many shows. But their quality ratio is unmatched.

And Ted Lasso got boring after the first season 🤷‍♂️

MeatsOfRage ,

Morning Show too. When we’re looking for a new thing to watch we always check Apple first to see if there’s anything new. Netflix drops heaps of garbage on their service then cancels the good stuff. Prime has a lot of really expensive but hollow productions. Zaslav is stripping HBO for parts. Apple doesn’t put out a lot but I can usually trust the stuff they put on there.

craftyindividual ,

While I persist with Netflix for budget, films and a few perrenial favourites… they don’t half pump the garbage. Great true crime, and just as much half baked shit-podcast-now-a-shit-series true crime :/

Yeah even shows I’m not into have a mark of quality that definitely is appealing to others interests. As is typical with Apple, they focus on quality over quantity. Haters hate, and there is plenty to be critical of, but Apple gives a fuck about quality much more than a lot of their competition.

As if European state governments aren’t also stupid and would come up with this idea.

The EU sucks sometimes but where ever you live in the EU your gov would totally come up with this on their own…

MentalEdge ,

Obviously. The point is that it’s the kind of thing that will make me reject the very society I’m living in, and I would change it wholly to avoid this.

I will just remind yall that an state in the EU has admitted to having access to the Pegasus spyware.

Pegasus is a program that is used by services combating crime and corruption in many countries…It would be bad if the Polish services did not have this type of tool

  • Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the leader of the ruling Law and Justice party as quoted by the Verge (first article I found)

He is also quoted as saying that claims that Pegasus had been used against political opponents are “utter nonsense”.

The Polish controversy was started when the spyware was found on a opposition members phone.

The Law and Justice party, according to polls (and some Poles), is set to win the largest number of seats in tomorrows election, though they might struggle to form a government.

We are doomed aren’t we.

One could think you’re proposing this as an alternate solution. It’s not. And Brexit is the biggest proof.

That said implementing backdoors is so backwards it’s creative in the worst way. You basically prepare the tools for a rogue government, rogue government employee, or a knowledgeable malicious actor to grab secure information from the silver plater. It’s the dumbest shit.

MentalEdge ,

No shit. Only reason I bring it up is as a way to illustrate how badly I do not want this.

MinekPo1 ,
@MinekPo1@lemmygrad.ml avatar

One could think you’re proposing this [leaving the EU] as an alternate solution. It’s not. And Brexit is the biggest proof.

This is not a random thing thrown around, though it should be noted that those more involved in this side of “EU bad” usually advocate for remaking the EU, due to the deep systemic issues rather than leaving it. I believe a more mainstream version of this idea is given a stage by Macron (AFAIK he mostly wants to remove the requirement for every country to agree to some things), but moreso from this angle some Pirate Parties (PPP for example) advocate for it.

Quote from PPP’s programee (translated by yours truly, though I focused on translating it as directly as possible so it might sound a bit weird):

More democracy for Europe

We, Pirates, call for a writing of a new EU treaty, which will replace all existing treaties, remove uncertainties and respond to the need of a democratic reform in the EU. This treaty must be accepted by the citizens of the EU via a referendum.

While this is quite different to “we should leave the EU” it reflects the concerns of those who say that due to policies like this. As far as I know, Brexit was caused more by Brits not liking economic policies of the European Union, though I am not that knowledgeable about UK politics.

TL;DR: you can say EU bad while still wanting an EU I guess.

lolcatnip ,

As far as I know, Brexit was caused more by Brits not liking economic policies of the European Union, though I am not that knowledgeable about UK politics.

I’m not that knowledgeable, being an American, but my understanding is that Brexit was mainly the result of racism, and of English people falling for easily disproven lies about the economic impact of EU membership. I’d like to think that what I lack in direct experience of British politics, I make up for with direct experience of the exact same bullshit in American politics.

Did you intend to make some kind of point here?

DillyDaily ,

Not everyone who wants to be vaccinated against covid can be vaccinated.

And not everyone who is vaccinated can receive the full benefits of vaccination due to being immunocompromised.

As someone who gets a Hep B vaccine every single year, I do what I can to protect myself, but my body is incapable of producing antibodies long term, it’s because of an autoimmune condition, not because the vaccine isn’t widely effective. I’m always going to be more susceptible to it (and I work in healthcare so I have to keep getting the vaccine). I’m lucky I only have this issue with hep b, my other vaccines seem to have “taken”, but I’m not alone, there are many people out there that have this issue with various vaccines.

My cousin had an anaphylactic reaction to the flu vaccine a few years ago, he can’t take it again. He’s in a vulnerable position because he has a trachy, so his airways don’t have as much natural protection. He has to trust that his co-workers will stay away from him if they catch the flu, because he can’t get vaccinated even though he wants and needs to.

daellat ,

It does reduce transmission it just doesn’t reduce it to 0%. Life is not so black and white.

DillyDaily ,

It does technically reduce transmission potential, though indirectly.

If you do contract covid or the flu after having been vaccinated, you are less likely to have severe symptoms, including coughing and sneezing. If you’re not coughing up a lung all over the place, you’re not spreading as much as someone who is hocking loogeys over everyone else.

freeindv ,

Except everyone I know who got the shot has gotten sick way more frequently then those who didn’t. That’s backed up by the data that shows the shots give an initial boost in immunity, but slow negative effectiveness long term

It's not outside the realm of possibility. Though it had to be the perfect storm for something like that to cause a global catastrophe.

    SARGEx117 ,

There ARE bacteria that can digest certain plastics.

“plastic” is just a catch-all term for polymers, but there are different kinds made of different materials. Your phone case isn’t the same plastic as a milk jug. (abs/PETG vs HDPE, their long science names don’t really matter it’s just to show the difference)

Over the decades, certain kinds of bacteria have been shown to eat certain plastics in the right conditions.

Unfortunately, it’s those “right conditions” that make large scale plastic disposal via bacteria not feasible right now.

I’m sure someone is barreling toward discovering a “this thing eats almost all polymers in normal outside temperatures” to make their company more profitable, while ignoring the fact that if it breaks out of their containment areas, “bacteria that can eat all your plastic things in a few weeks breaks containment, billions in damages already” could potentially hit the headlines within a month.

Yeah, that’s DoOmPoStInG but it’s a potential thing that could happen, and people are actively TRYING to make some of those things happen already, so it’s within possibility.

But my friend made me take them right then and there, as anybody would, as he always had a good ability to talk me out of my inhibitions.

It’s been about a decade since then and lemme tell you, life is better on two legs than three.

Hell I had been wanting a Reddit alternative for the longest time because the place was a shit hole from the beginning, but traditional online forums are dead.

It took a Perma ban from the whole site for me to make the switch, it’s going to come sooner or later, it’s a ban happy website it wasn’t even the first time.

Even then I felt like a criminal on the run.

PS: a bunch of right wing trolls have reported my account for threats of violence, simply because I said something about Star Wars that they didn’t like.

I got a permaban, and had to write an appeal letter to get them to look at what I actually posted to realize that there was not even the slightest hint of a threat there.

Ironically the second time was for abusing the report button, something that’s not even listed in their terms of service, because that was easier than actually looking at all of the bigoted things that I reported. I try appealing that too, but never got a response

I wasn’t an early adopter of Reddit, or Lemmy, but this sort of has the same issues of momentum as web browsers do. It doesn’t matter how they started. Where they are now is the standard, and that’s what you have to build to in order to be a viable replacement. With browsers it’s the capability to serve pretty much any page with all the bells and whistles, with Reddit/Lemmy it’s all the posts, comments, and user base. I think it can happen, but it won’t be easy or fast. I’m not worried, though. I think we can rely on spez to send more users this way until a suitable number of users have joined.

Lemmy thrives for geeky hobbies that surround the FOSS space that gave birth to it, so communities like Linux or Unixporn have a strong enough presence, but for pretty much anything else it’s just not there yet. Are you talking money, or more in the “make them pay for their insolence” kind of pay? I think we already have the latter.

    pingveno ,

Apparently not, since they are taking away the meaningless Internet awards that were essentially a free source of money. I’m still baffled by that situation.

    mindbleach ,

Haven’t you heard? They’re bringing it back, exactly as before, except now you can receive money for being awarded.

Which is going to go so goddamn terribly in no time flat.

    Strayce , in Stay safe!

I’m not against this, but I feel like the pizza needs to be on the bottom. You’re just gonna get cheese all over your hands.

    Snailpope ,

At the least I would flip it right before eating it, having it on top is good for presentation purposes.

    Num10ck ,

wait a minute… if you just slapped an upside down pizza on top of another pizza, would that become a burger? oh its a panuozzo.

    Rocketpoweredgorilla ,
    @Rocketpoweredgorilla@lemmy.ca avatar

I kind of do that all the time with store bought pizzas… after I cook them I simply fold them in half and eat. (Sort of like a big pizza pop/calzone)

    Zekas ,

It would still be a sandwich because a burger is a sandwich.

    Carnelian ,

I want cheese on my hands

    PunnyName ,

    Damn, you said it first!

    On the inside.

Edit: Pizza toppings should be oriented so that they are inside the sandwich.

If it burns your fingers, how does it not burn your mouth?

    z3rOR0ne ,

I honestly have eaten hot food that has burned my fingers but not my mouth…i don’t know why and I honestly cannot recall why i continued to eat after my hands were burned… I am probably going to get mouth cancer later on in life…

    Ajen ,

I’m pretty sure your saliva helps cool it down a little. And most people salivate when there’s hot food in their mouth.

    Ajen ,

Of course it burns your mouth, there’s not much you can do about that. But your can at least protect your fingers.

Literally every company is doing this. There was a time when, for example, Apple could reverse engineer the Word document format and make their own word processor that uses them. This was very common and resulted in things like IBM PC clones that sped up innovation.

Now companies use litigation and corporate buyouts to reduce their competition, then set up ways to extract rents on customers rather than providing a service. Business folks love this because it means a consistent stream of revenue that won't go away. And now you've got carmakers looking to charge by the month for features.

For more details, read Chokepoint Capitalism.

    tuxrandom ,

And now you've got carmakers looking to charge by the month for features.

When I reach the point at which I am forced to buy a car like that, I'd just find out from where the feature gets controlled and hack in my own controller and a good 'ol switch.

    ekky43 ,

Right now it’s your right to do what you want to your car as long as it still passes vehicle inspection, but it appears that car makers want new laws that prevent you from modifying your own car.

If we just sit on our hands now, well likely move into a future where we will be forced to either pay subscription or take public transit, which requires subscriptions.

    sznowicki ,

Even allowed now I would never ever modify my car firmware due to huge liability in case of any incident. Literally any insurance company figuring out you tempered with car software would try to take all the money paid for damages back from you.

    aesopjah ,

You can inject CAN bus commands if you can sniff what they’re sending. No firmware modification necessary. Not saying it’s a good idea to do so, but it is possible to do so.

    tvarog_smetana ,

The Library of Congress added “software that runs land vehicles” to their copyright exceptions somewhat recently. That’s why farmers are legally allowed to use cracked software from Ukrainian grain farmers to run/repair their tractors

    loobkoob ,
    @loobkoob@kbin.social avatar

At least public transit is an ongoing service. I'm far less opposed to subscriptions when I'm actually being provided with something for them.

Car manufacturers trying to charge subscriptions for features in the car you own feels like racketeering. They're not providing an ongoing service, they're asking me to keep paying them to not remove a feature.

Cory Doctorow’s new book delves into this as well. I’m 2/3 through but it defines the problem very well for laymen and prescribes how to solve it.

This was very common and resulted in things like IBM PC clones that sped up innovation.

i don’t think it was due to reverse engineering but bcz of releasing specification by IBM them self due to which other manufacturer where able to make identical clone and can run extracted BIOS from IBM PC without any modification!
