just made it easier for police to pull the trigger because they’re all terrified for their lives.

Police brutality isn’t a product of fear. They treat armed crowds with more respect than groups they assume to be unarmed.

Ajen ,

Also, why couldn’t they call her a “woman of science?”

Ajen ,

No, it’s a thought experiment, not a pun or joke.

Ajen ,

OK then, how do you think it’s a pun?

Ajen ,

Catholics are like cats, they are all supposedly the same but hold no real standard ideology.

Catholicism for most followers is kind of like brunch, you pick and choose which parts you want.

I love those analogys.

Ajen ,

What are you celebrating, exactly? TikTok isn’t going away, it’s just going to be sold to American investors.

Ajen ,

Some bills don’t have teeth. It sounds like this one does. What do you think would happen if ByteDance doesn’t comply?

Ajen ,

You’re saying people in the US would keep using it if it were banned in the US but still available in the rest of the world? How? It wouldn’t be available on app stores, and the website would be blocked by American DNS servers. Most TikTok users aren’t tech savvy enough to get around bans.

Ajen ,

Lol, I don’t agree with what the parent poster said, but your interpretation is way off!

Which part? How do you see things differently?

Ajen ,

Most of TikTok’s user base is either on iOS or not tech savvy enough to figure that out.

Ajen ,

Gen Z don’t use apple products?

Ajen ,

I don’t think TikTok’s success outside of the US is relevant to the thread. It isn’t being banned because lawmakers want ByteDance to make less money.

Ajen ,

I think you’re missing the point.

Ajen ,

This still allows bolt action for hunting

Do you honestly believe bolt-action is adequate for hunting?

Ajen ,

People normally don’t bow hunt dangerous game, they bow hunt animals like deer and elk. Most hunters wouldn’t use a bow to hunt boars.

People also used lead plumbing for hundreds of years. Doesn’t mean we shouldn’t use modern alternatives.

Ajen ,

I was talking about animals like moose and boar, but people do hunt bears. Legally. It doesn’t sound like you know anything about hunting.

Ajen ,

Let rangers deal with large animals.

If the rangers want to sell licenses to hunt mountain lions and bears, who am I to tell them they’re wrong? Stay in your lane.

Ajen ,

In what way is the Linux kernel proprietary?

Ajen ,

The fundamental issue with winning the lottery is that nobody who understands personal finance enough to handle winning would ever waste money playing the lottery.

It’s hard to imagine burning through $1.3B, but after taxes it’ll only be about $400M.

I don’t think you understand personal finance. No one in America pays a 70% effective tax rate. How did you end up at $400M??

Ajen ,

They’re mostly just used for tamper-proof screws for things like bathroom stalls so people can’t take them apart as a “prank” or whatever. The screw driver bits tend to break easily, which is usually worse than the screw stripping.

Ajen ,

It’s far from the most desirable part of the state. Look at prices in other areas, like Honolulu or Kaneohe.

Ajen ,

Are they a good choice if you only need to print a few times a year? I thought laser printers are better for that since there’s no ink to dry out.

Ajen ,

Looks like it’s last official version was released in 2007. Are you using a version from gimpshop.com with added adware/spyware? The wiki for gimpshop is pretty eye-opening…

I originally created Gimpshop, but I’m not the jerk who owns that domain and added adware & spyware to the source. Sorry about that. I hate that this guy is out there making my fun little project into an abomination.

Ajen ,

Yep, they’ll probably stop updating the Affinity product and launch a new product line with annual subscriptions. Probably cloud-based.

Ajen ,

Yeah, it’s kind of like crowd-funding. The early customers get a great deal, but also have the risk of the company going out of business.

Ajen ,

How much software is standalone these days, though? It seems like most companies are shifting to SaaS.

Ajen ,

Nextcloud isn’t SaaS, unless you’re paying someone else to manage your server. Self-hosting is never SaaS.

Ajen ,

I think getting permission from Google would be harder than being enough hardware.

Ajen ,

I misunderstood, I thought the person I was replying to was talking about Googles cache, not IA.

Ajen ,

Are they singling out LGBQT+? Or are they treating all non-governmental groups the same?

Ajen ,

Where in the article does it say they’re singling out LGBQT+?

Ajen ,

The article says this applies to all non-governmental flags, not just the pride flag. I read the article and didn’t see anything singling out LGBQT+, but if I missed something I hope you’ll point out out.

Ajen ,

You’re moving the goal posts, and drawing associations without any evidence. This thread is about the article being clickbait, which it is. This is an omnibus spending bill, so the existence of anti-LGBQT+ riders on the same bill doesn’t make this specific clause anti-LGBQT+.

Ajen ,

Just to recap: nothing in the article you posted supports your point, except for a self-aggrandizing quote from some politician, so you’re resorting to sarcasm.

Ajen ,

I thought 90% was defeating DRM and 10% was reducing download size. Doesn’t matter how quick the download is if DRM blocks you from running the game.

I don’t pirate games (any more) but my understanding is that FitGirl is one of the few crackers who can defeat denuvo, which means the only choice for pirates is repack.

Ajen ,

TBH I totally thought they were the same person/group until now. Not really into the cracking scene, though…

Are you saying you think a defense attorney’s job isn’t to do their best to defend their client?

Ajen ,

OK, but your previous post says:

Many defense attorneys aren’t there to get their clients out of trouble, especially in high profile cases, they exist to make sure that the law is applied fairly.

Do stand by what you said about defense attorneys not “there to get their clients out of trouble?”

Ajen ,

You’re really arguing that a defense attorney’s job isn’t to get their client out of trouble (or in other words, defend them)? Do you realize how ridiculous that is?

Ajen ,

From your link:

For several reasons, lawyers should defend their clients vigorously regardless of whether or not they believe them to be innocent.

From your previous post:

Many defense attorneys aren’t there to get their clients out of trouble

Their job is specifically to get their clients out of trouble.

Ajen ,

Exactly how do Glassdoor expect people to give earnest reviews of their employers

They don’t. The enshitification has begun and they only care about short-term profits now that they’ve built up a user base.

Ajen ,

Congress members don’t make enough to be rich without taking bribes. They make $174k/year in 2024, which is equivalent to $75k/year in 1990. The only wages that haven’t dropped due to inflation are CEO and other C-suites.

Sam Bankman-Fried deserves 40-50 years in prison for FTX fraud, prosecutors say (www.reuters.com)

NEW YORK, March 15 (Reuters) - Sam Bankman-Fried should spend between 40 and 50 years in prison after being convicted for stealing $8 billion from customers of his now-bankrupt FTX cryptocurrency exchange, prosecutors said on Friday. … “Even now Bankman-Fried refuses to admit what he did was wrong,” prosecutors wrote in a...

Ajen ,

How did he become a billionaire? From what I’ve heard his parents were connected and well-off, but not billionaires. And he doesn’t seem old enough to have made billions on his own before FTX. If he only became a billionaire by temporarily scamming people, I don’t think that counts.
