Gotta love GOG’s patch rollback.

Ephera ,

Honestly, that’s the real problem here. No one would complain about a patch, if they could freely decide to play with it or not…

gaael ,

Why can’t they (genuine question) ?

Hubi ,

Hosting costs probably. Rolling back a patch is a rare scenario and Steam would have to host every version of every game in their store on their servers indefinitely.

morbidcactus ,

Afaik that’s actually something steam does though, tools like Depot Downloader combined with SteamDB to get the metadata for a target version totally work, I’ve used that in the past to downgrade Skyrim before disabling auto updates. You can do it through the steam console as well.

systemglitch ,

I always did this manually, interesting to note there is a program to help with this.

Jako301 ,

Because Bethesda doesn’t provide the legacy versions on steam, unlike other mod focused games, afaik. Once you’ve updated your game, you are stuck with whatever version you have.

Sure, you can always download the right version from somewhere else, but I wouldn’t count piracy + the risks coming with it as a viable excuse for their fuckup.

LiveLM ,

Steam desperately needs to allow you to NOT update a game.

SeekPie ,

Isn’t there a “disable automatic updates” button in Steam?

ZeroHora ,
@ZeroHora@lemmy.ml avatar

So far as I know, you still need to update to launch the game, so you need to disable automatic updates and play offline.

theneverfox ,

Wait… Can’t you just pick a version in steam?

systemglitch ,

You can still access the legacy versions if you learn how to download the old steam depo manifest that is always archived.

lorty ,
@lorty@lemmy.ml avatar

Steam has support for this (and many games use it). As far as I know it’s just a matter of the developers using it.

ShortFuse , (edited )

Steam has limited rollback support from the command line which we had to do plenty of times for Starfield when working on Luma. Sometimes updates are small. Sometimes the entire exe gets reshuffled so you have to find where to patch the exe all over again.

All the versions are apparently there. You just need to download the “depot” and it’ll dump into a folder. From there you copy that folder over your game directly.

It also works the other way around. I can download the depot for the latest version and stay on the version I’m at. It’s useful to pick apart and diff what was actually changed.

Why they can’t add that as an option I’m not sure. That seems more of a UX/UI issue rather than a technical one (like avoiding people using old versions on the web server).

The way to fight the 2 party system, starts at the grass roots and grows upwards, you can Not fight it from the top down.

metallic_z3r0 , (edited )

The only other fast way to fight it is with violence, but without clear national unity and already decent leadership it usually results in some form of autocracy, making the situation worse.

Edit: violent revolution* usually doesn’t work, but violence itself can be rather effective

JayDee , (edited )

I think you’ve falsely equated violence with revolution.

There are currently arsonists in Atlanta and elsewhere in the US fighting the creation of cop city and projects like it via property damage. That is violence with no danger of creating an autocracy. I’d argue the Black Panthers, the Suffragettes and the IRA all used violence which posed no danger of autocracy.

I do agree that strong group unity, some form of multistate participation, and good leadership and structure, are all very important for it to yield positive results.

Edit: put NRA instead of IRA, fuck me. Fixed now.

Ecotank inkjet printer

Yes

They literally can’t drm liquid ink that you pour into ink tanks

DetailObserver ,

yet.

dumpsterlid ,

Personally I think HP is missing the point focusing on putting drm on inkjet refills, it is only half committing to the business strategy.

The existence of a finished, printed paper begins at the moment of conception when the customer conceives of wanting to print a document. Really every step after that point (including the conception step itself) is monetizable by HP and more importantly rightfully owned as intellectual property of HP that you are technically stealing if you don’t follow through with actually printing the document on an HP printer.

HP is just leaving all of that money on the table, or maybe the printer market is just too heavily regulated for HP to innovate properly in a healthy free market.

Car ,

I would like to subscribe to more corporate monetization facts

dumpsterlid ,

Congratulations you are now subscribed to Business Facts.

Ah sir, you ommm, made it so that every page of paper we use while working is deducted from our time off by HR (1 piece of paper = 10 minutes vacation time).

Whose paper should we use?

CosmicTurtle ,

The problem is that they can’t control open source drivers. They could, however, release a printer that ran on proprietary closed source drivers. But they’d have to spend money on developers to maintain that code whereas right now, drivers are more or less stable and developed for free.

What they could do is require the use of HP printer paper, with embedded RFID or watermarks that would be readable by HP printers. I’m honestly surprised they haven’t gone down this road.

dumpsterlid , (edited )

See this is exactly what I am talking about when I say HP is leaving money on the table here, when thinking about these topics you just utilized the intellectual property of the following products for self improvement, recreation and social benefit:

Economically Recoverable Use Of Products By Thought (ER-UOPBT)HP EcoPrecision Advanced Document Rendering Suite™ (HP EDARS™) For the simple act of translating your document into printer-readable format. HP SmartCartridge Alignment Pro+ System™ (HP SCAPS™) Ensures your ink cartridges are perfectly aligned for each print, for the low price of continued subscription. HP QuantumInk Subscription Service™ (HP QISS™) Provides monthly ink deliveries while monitoring your ink levels remotely through quantum encryption. HP PrintAssure Secure Environment Technology™ (HP PASET™) An exclusive service that creates a secure printing tunnel to protect your documents from prying eyes. HP PaperLoad Ultimate Feed Mechanism™ (HP PLUFM™) A premium paper tray enhancement that promises to handle even the thinnest paper without a single jam. HP ColorSync Precision Match™ (HP CSPM™) A color management system that requires regular calibration via an online service to maintain color accuracy. HP PageSense Automated Counting Service™ (HP PACS™) A cloud-based page counting solution to ensure you’re billed for each dot of ink on the paper. HP IntelliConnect Wi-Fi Booster Pack™ (HP IWBP™) A proprietary Wi-Fi extension service designed to maintain a robust connection between your devices and the printer. HP ClearText Font Rendering Optimization™ (HP CFRO™) A patented font enhancement service that sharpens the text on your prints, available in 12-month access packages. HP OneTouch Print Harmony Experience™ (HP OTPHE™) A personalized one-button printing interface that’s locked behind a bi-monthly membership fee. HP Printalytics Predictive Maintenance Hub™ (HP PPMH™) An AI-driven analysis tool that predicts printer issues and schedules interventions, all reportable to your HP Premium Support Account Manager. HP UltraPrint Resolution Enhancement Layer™ (HP UREL™) A downloadable print resolution enhancement that requires a special code from your HP Print Quality Loyalty Program. HP FirstSheet FastTrack Technology™ (HP FFST™) Speeds up the printing of the first page of any document after a minor upgrade to your printer firmware. HP WhisperMode Acoustic Dampening Service™ (HP WMADS™) A subscription-based service to reduce printer noise with each cycle, for a more serene office environment. ___

Thus you are clearly already a customer of HP, and the exchange of HP giving your mind the imaginative capacity (Thought-As-A-Service) to visualize a printed document it is only reasonable to bundle with a subscription you pay to HP.

Are you going to tell me the US Supreme Court isn’t dumb enough to make this federal law? Also, if you think my joke was wayyy too much of a logical stretch to make any sense you should see what these people think about women and their bodies.

Even better, each and every particle of ink can be a network connected nano-machine, the usage of which, is available as a subscription.
If and when your subscription expires, all ink connected to your account will stop working. Ink previously used for printing, will fall off the paper.
This can be prevented, on using special HP papers, with an ink-capturing coating of nano-machines which can be separately subscribed by the owner of the product of printing.

Meaning, now you can print books with HP printers and the customers can pay you a subscription fees to keep the book alive. Alternatively, they can print on HP paper and you can pay subscription fees to HP yourself.

I call it IaaS (Information-Retention as a Service)

Alk ,

I thought the joke here was that even when they’re not locked your average inkjet printer is a hot pile of garbage machinery that works only when the planets align and you’ve sacrificed 3 goats and a your firstborn.

Meanwhile laster jet printers work most of the time except when they don’t.

Edit: one time I wanted to buy more ink for my inkjet and there was a brand new inkjet printer that came with ink that was less expensive than a new cartridge. (Of the same size)

The new printer was $30 and worked just as poorly as my $150 inkjet.

I’ve done printer maintenance for years among other things and inkjets are literally designed and manufactured in the deepest layer of hell.

x4740N ,
@x4740N@lemmy.world avatar

I looked into laser printers but they didn’t meet my requirement of wanting to print photos

Brother has started putting drm in their laser printers and I’m not aware of a replacement brand for them yet

BorgDrone ,

I was looking for a new printer and I also wanted to print photos. Problem with inkjets is that you have to use them regularly or the ink dries out so that was no option either.

I eventually settled on a black and white laserprinter, which is cheap to buy and run (a new 3000 page toner is like €40) and a Canon Selphy CP1500 for photos, which uses dye sublimation so no issues with ink drying out. It only prints 15x10 photos which covers the majority of my needs, for anything larger I want to use a good photo printing service anyway.

sin_free_for_00_days , in I'm already at the end of my paragraph, and I haven't even finished speaking my third word.

I mean Xerxes and Caligula also attacked Ocean and look what happened. And it wasn’t even really Ocean.

Kiosade ,

What I don’t get is… I mean, the relative speed difference between the bullets and the plane just doesn’t seem like it would be enough to cause them to rip through the plane as if the plane was shot on the ground from a dude with a gun or something.

Mongostein ,

The bullets lose momentum once fired, but the jet added momentum after firing, so it’s more like it caught up to the bullets.

Kiosade ,

Right but what was the speed difference at impact? Like if the jet was only going say, 60 MPH faster than the bullets, wouldn’t it just be like when some gravel on the road bounces off your car on the highway?

Mongostein ,

Indeed. I read a little more and it did indeed shoot itself down, so… 🤷‍♂️

Kiosade ,

Yeah in the end it IS what happened, so I guess the speed difference must have been considerable. I just wonder how it could have been so much. Maybe the afterburners can create a LOT of acceleration/thrust, idk.

theneverfox ,

There were angles involved - imagine throwing a Frisbee forward and running fast enough to bump into it. Now imagine you throw it up, and you run until it hits you in the back of the head

No matter how fast you’re going forward, it’s still coming at you from an angle you’re not moving

sin_free_for_00_days ,

He shot the bullets, then tilted down a little more and hit his afterburners. He had to pull up so not to continue on to a salty grave and his parabolic trajectory and the bullets surprised each other. So, a pinch of the bullets slowing significantly and a sprinkle of the plane speeding up.

Inception was just ok and Interstellar got me to stop watching Nolan movies all together.

rwhitisissle ,

I remember being fairly drunk and going to see Interstellar at an indy arthouse movie theater that sold you overpriced craft beers. I remember relatively little of the finer points of Interstellar other than the fact that I couldn’t stop laughing at how monumentally dumb it was. I have no idea why they even had it so that McConaughey’s character had a son that he just basically didn’t give a shit about because he wasn’t as smart as his dad and sister. He’s like “Oh, I miss my daughter Murph so much. Also the other one is probably still alive assuming he never drank any pesticide. What’s his name again? Stumpy? Whatever.” Also I loved how Matt Damon played a soulless robot better than Bill Irwin, who voiced the actual soulless machines in the movie. God, what a fucking terrible movie.

Tlaloc_Temporal ,

Same on Interstellar. For a movie that spawned a paper on mathematical realities of black holes and how to render them, and the rather realistic aesthetic, so so many things are brain-dead cliche or just technical enough to be extra wrong. mod_pp ,
@mod_pp@lemmy.world avatar

Who are you so wise in the ways of science?

Hazmatastic ,

I mean, you could just convert the Farenheit or Celsius degrees to radians like they were angle degrees. “Bake at 6.109 radians for 45 minutes” still can mean “Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes” if you accept the implicit Farenheit scale. Radians would still be ambiguous regarding the base scale used, but it’s as ambiguous as “degrees” is so not really an issue.

So I mean, there’s no real reason to do it but also no reason you can’t.

lolcatnip ,

Except temperature degrees aren’t related angle degrees. You’d be using a pun as a unit conversion.

Hazmatastic ,

Dismissing good advice because the person who gave it to you has flaws is the epitome of logical behavior!

araozu ,

Let’s assume I didn’t know about vaccines and I went to ask for advice to someone. How would I know if what they told me was good advice?

I would ask myself, are they an authority on the subject? Where do they draw the advice from? Who says they are an authority? What did they have to do to earn that authority? Do other authorities say the same?

Are mormons authorities on logic? Why trust advice about logic from someone that doesn’t follow logic?

A liar can say that lying is bad. A killer can say that killing is bad. It just so happens that the advice is good, in spite of who said it.

GlitterInfection ,

You ended up agreeing with me in that last sentence.

Disregarding advice you know is good already because you don’t respect the source is an emotional, not logical, choice.

araozu ,

Yes, it’s emotional to disregard advice you know is good. However it is a logical reaction to have.

It is logical for humans not to trust or accept advice from a hypocrite, even if that advice may be good. It’s not about the advice itself, but about who gives it. That was my point.

Unfortunately humans have emotions, and those emotions factor into our so called “logical decisions”. To ignore our emotions is to pretend we are machines, and machines wouldn’t be in these situations, as a machine wouldn’t give advice it doesn’t follow itself.

Now, if we were machines, sure, if the advice is good, it’s good, doesn’t matter who gives it.

Furthermore, if I already know the advice is good, did I receive advice?

GlitterInfection ,

Well, OK, sure. Irrationality is logical in that it’s human.
