Auzy ,

Not a single person is surprised.

The reality is that Apple has been anti consumer and anti developer for 20 years. I was selling apple gear, and can practically pinpoint the moment they started screwing everyone

Auzy ,

They actually are.

  1. Android allows people to bypass their store as an example, and their APIs are a lot more permissive. It’s also a mostly open OS (except some parts)
  2. It doesn’t matter what you think about Google, remember, Apple gets paid millions / billions to make them the default search engine. So they’re at least as bad
  3. Remember Pebble? Apple abused their app store to kill them off
  4. Apple doesn’t treat their resellers particularly well.
  5. Microsoft bailed them out, and then they repaid them, but sh**talking them.
  6. They don’t treat developers particularly well either. Apple actively uses their monopoly to compete against other developers, and even screws subscription services
  7. Apple deceived customers to win business. I used to sell them, and their Mac Vs PC ads accomplished what they’d hoped. Every new customer walked in and thought Mac’s can’t get viruses and won’t crash. Here in Australia, they should have been sued
  8. You can even develop Android and Chrome apps without any Google hardware. Apple however, that’s not an option.
  9. Apple even forced developers to use their Apple ID thing.
  10. Apple doesn’t sell your details. However, it’s almost impossible to use their hardware without providing them, and they even forced their resellers to meet targets whilst actively competing against them (using the harvested details)

They’re literally NOTHING alike. Apple literally treats everyone like crap, but sugar coats it. The only real bad thing you could say about Google is privacy related honestly (and the fact they keep killing their own projects).

In fact, name any type of Apple user who they treat well?

I use a Mac Studio, and I’d love to work at Apple simply to help improve things on the inside. The crazy thing is that the problem isn’t the Apple developers, but select people in their team

Auzy ,

That’s true… Apparently 90% of their profit is ads

But they don’t block other ad providers in the google play store, and they don’t block other hardware using Android to show their own ads. In fact Apple could technically adopt android and put their own app store on it. You can’t do that on IOS.

In fact, Google is getting penalised simply because their search engine is dominating the market (but they’re not doing anything to prevent other companies in Chrome for instance for putting their own search engines and such). Whereas Apple is getting penalised for hostile behavior.

Auzy ,

Yep, maybe if you abuse me, it will add credibility…

Your post specifically was correlating the two. But, seems more like since you don’t have any real justification for your response, you’re resorting to calling me a “STAN” or whatever. If you want to do that, I prefer you stick to Reddit, where that behavior is commonplace.

Google have done very little to block other app stores or other ad providers on their platforms… That’s why they’re likely far behind. Apple on the other hand have a long history of blocking apps, or delaying them, and blocking App stores.

The proof is, most popular Android products aren’t even made by Apple (Samsung). And a lot of android products don’t even ship the Play store.

Complaints for IOS and Android developers are remarkably different. Many Android developers are complaining there are too many variants of devices, whereas many Apple developers (particularly bigger ones) complain about Apple business practices.

Getting locked out of the App Store, means your product is dead. Even worse, Apple used to ban entire products from their app store, explicitly if it replicates some of their functionality too (or even not even tell the developer why). If that’s not anti-competitive, I don’t know what is.

Auzy ,

I hope you need a 500mb driver to use it too with an installer that pops up every reboot, even if you press cancel.

Otherwise, it’s clear that it fails at being a mouse

Auzy ,

And nobody noticed…

Maybe calling a hero cave diver a pedo wasn’t a great idea, Elon

Auzy ,

I didn’t even realise until the other day you need an account to use it now at all it seems.

So no surprise. In the past, I recall you could browse without a login… so of course nobody is going to put ads on it

Also, why would you want those customers?

Auzy ,

I just didn’t 20 hours so far on it

What I don’t like is that you need to finish the day for it to save

Also the wording about what happens to crops at the end of season should change

But otherwise, it’s something to do, but it is getting a bit click and pointy really. I wish you should pair up with characters more and walk around with then

Auzy ,

I don’t think so. Maybe I’m missing something?

Auzy ,

I seriously didn’t realize this was meant to be a secret?

Trump still can’t say “China” without saying it in a really weird tone because he’s used to saying “China flu” with emphasis on China.

You can’t help but think that a big component of the depression/doom feeling a lot of the experienced at the time was indirectly related to things Trump did

Auzy ,

Actually, I did have this exact issue last time I used bazzite, and ended up switching to fedora.

Bluetooth would just stop working. Which was an issue because I was using a dual shock as a mouse and for gaming

Auzy ,

And the biggest badasses I know also drive some of the crappiest cars and such too.

When more hilariously, here in Australia, I do a lot of hiking and such, and the badasses these days tend to be women. There’s a lot of macho guys who talk big, but I’ve done some scary hikes with elderly women and a woman with Parkinson’s.

The guys and women i.know who do the most crazy stuff also tend to be the most friendly people

Auzy ,

Ahh yes. I switched companies because some new sales guy I discovered was getting paid more than me after I was there 9 years.

Auzy ,

You can’t use a lot of apps without it

So sure you can, but it isn’t an awesome experience

Auzy ,

Looking forward to an upgraded crossover office along with it

Auzy ,

He’s 1/3 Hitler 2/3rds dictator

The kind of people who actively vote for him probably aren’t the most charitable people

Auzy ,

I looked something up today.

Do plumbers fit shower screens? Plumbers do not usually fit frameless shower screens. Most of the time, they break the glass panels and hurt themselves. Others do not try going through the installation hassle.

The whole thing is embarrassing. The only way it could be worse could be if they harvested 4chan

Auzy ,

Here in Australia I busted someone with a locked Facebook profile who apparently worked at a ford reseller lying about Kias EV9.

He did the whole laugh emoji and called me a stalker, but deleted his message a few minutes later (probably got a call from his employer who I tagged who was probably worried about the legal repercussions). I pointed out it was libel to lie like that

Auzy ,

Actually… Just noticed one talking shit about EV’s who works for Land rover.

But yeah, I’ve realised the same people talking shit about EV’s, tend to be the same people causing issues for everyone… They always have a locked profile (because they troll that much), they’re often anti-vax/anti-science and they’re the kind of toxic a-holes who were buttheads in high school, and continue to be.

I guarantee they also stocked meat and toilet paper during the pandemic, and tend to leave trash when 4wd’ing

Auzy ,

Honestly… That’s a fairly harsh response to someone with an opinion…

I kind of feel they don’t deserve that attack… It doesn’t mean they have any plans to buy it.

I wouldn’t, and I’m actually selling my ps5 and set up my old PC with steam and big picture mode… But, pointing out the disadvantages in a normal way is more effective than attacking people

Auzy , (edited )

This was one of those toxic questions designed to cause people to argue. That’s really its ONLY purpose. It really only has 2 answers, and both can be interpreted as toxic.

My 2 cents though, here in Australia, you’ll occasionally get a question about staying safe when hiking as women.

You’ll have a huge majority of women saying its safe to hike in Australia, and then 1 or 2 women encouraging women to bring knives or weapons. The ones who claim this then get a huge negative response by both women and guys pointing out it makes things more dangerous for everyone and that nobody needs them.

As a male guide also, I’ve actually found it difficult to find other guys to hike with, but it is incredibly trivial for me to find women to join me (in fact, doing one this upcoming weekend).

So, interpret that as you will, but, honestly, the people who are incredibly invested in either of these answers, in my opinion, nobody would want to hike with regardless (bears, other women or men), so the answer doesn’t affect them.

Auzy ,

Not really. On Lemmy, it seems to just refer to anything these days

And that includes theoretical predictions for things that never happened yet

Auzy ,

Exactly. It’s actually turning me off Lemmy completely.

And some of the times I’ve seen it used, the evidence was weak. Once challenged, it often resulted in the “trust me, you’ll see in a few years time” line

Auzy ,

I’d prefer they were busy trying to remove trackers than swooping.

My friend works in outdoor lighting at certain events and recently worked on a major outdoor event. Some of the shiny treasure section went missing. Eventually, they worked out it was a magpie and it was the first time world wide a bird stole parts of the exhibit

Auzy ,

You can’t think of it a single massive project. It’s actually lots of small components.

We could argue the linux kernel is bloated too. The reality is though, provided the project is designed to be modular (as SystemD is), it actually makes sense to keep it together, to ensure there is a standard base and all the components are synchronised fully with their API’s.

It also saves distro’s a lot of effort.

Auzy ,

If you’re going to make your system worse, you should also combine with Norton anti virus too.

Either that, or just use the Microsoft one that is free

Auzy ,

This sounds like one of those Facebook facts…

As others have said, source?

Auzy ,

Can we talk about the enshittifation of Lemmy. Where everyone seems to be calling everything enshittified?

Auzy ,

Really happy I’m kicking out my housemate.

He’s not anti-vax, but he only got the COVID Vax because without it, he couldn’t do stuff.

But then the guy kept going to concerts and such…And wouldn’t even tell me when he was sick (and still doesn’t, even when I complain). Since I run a hiking group (and we do a lot of alpine winter walks), its absolutely f**ked because if I get sick overnight on the top of mountains like bogong, i may have difficulty carrying a 20kg pack in freezing cold bad conditions

I also don’t believe he actually does RAT tests when I asked and he was clearly sick. When he got a notification at a concert that he needed to test for COVID in early days, he didn’t…

Once did a walk when I recovered from COVID, and turned out I had the flu (thanks to him). Despite being flat ground, by the end, I was struggling to go 500m without stopping for a few minutes

With something like this, once he got the vax, it would literally be a case of “f*** everyone else”.

Auzy ,

So tired of seeing these posts.

Nobody worth listening to is complaining about creating an account on GitHub. Ubuntu brainstorm was a huge success and you had to create an account for that too

It literally takes 30s.

And github has a hugely comprehensive API that allows developers to easily move if that want to.

If Microsoft Open sourced the backend, the reality is, nobody would look at the code, and everyone would still use GitHub because it’s reliable. Vs code is open source, and I’m willing to bet community contributions are limited

And open sourcing the backend just means Oracle will take the code, and set up their own server for marginally cheaper and make GitHub worse… That’s what they did with red hat

Auzy , (edited )

There is a massive GitHub API which you probably already aren’t using. And now you want them to release the source code which you also won’t look at?

If they open source the code, what contributions would you make? How many contributions have you made to the Lemmy code? How many with vs code?

How would it benefit open source projects given that GitHub hosting is free for open source? How would it benefit GitHub?

Would you host your own GitHub repo when you can host it for free (which it will be for open source) on GitHub or other services anyway

Some projects don’t really benefit from open source.

If it’s a big thing, host your own using an open source project. Compete against GitHub.

But calling me a shill isn’t really an effective argument. I have contributed to a few open source projects in the past and released some of my own.

I don’t feel like forcing companies to open source their projects is the way. Open source needs to win on it’s own merits. And plenty of open source projects have (the Linux kernel as an example).

Have you contributed anything to githubs competitors? That might be a place to start. Because at the moment, there aren’t any issues with GitHub that open sourcing would address. Microsoft don’t need the additional resources

Auzy ,

There’s a reason GitHub is the largest service lol

You need to sell services based on their advantages rather than the politics. The reality is, github allows projects to be very easily migrated to other services anyway.

Using something because it’s open source isn’t helpful at all if it doesn’t work with your workflow easily

Productivity is more important to the success of open source than anything else.

I know this, because a project of mine died because we wasted too much time on infrastructure

Developers don’t need access to the GitHub source to do their job, and there is no advantage to anyone.

In fact, if they distribute the code, it simply reduces the incentive for Microsoft to improve it, and the only ones who will step are, are shit companies like Oracle

Auzy , (edited )

Lemmy has gotten to the point everything is getting classed as enshittification or whatever

It’s actually getting crappy being here

Like the whole section about macos. Apple constantly screws developers, and somehow, the author has seemed to blame Valve lol. There’s a lot of reason lots of people don’t develop for Mac, and they’re mostly valid rather than political

Or GitHub. In the real world, developers don’t have any issues. Only in Lemmy, where people are even focusing on stupid things, so a barely visible unobtrusive sentence on a table mentions copilot lol

Auzy ,

I had an old computer lying around, so yesterday set up a steam os thing with bazzite and will be selling my ps5.

Honestly, I think if they marketed things like this more, there could be a lot more Linux penetration. A lot of us have old hardware sitting around, and bazzite seems to run as well as my ps5 and definitely runs games better than windows (with the exception of choppiness on my HDMI audio, but already have a cheap toslink interface inbound)

Auzy ,

What issue did you have? If you’re using AMD, shouldn’t be an issue, and how long ago did you try it?

Auzy ,

Actually. My controllers disappeared today in bazzite and won’t connect back . I might switch to a standard distro 😂

Auzy ,

If this is real, this is actually a good idea. Even things like multi monitor management work a lot better on KDE imho

Auzy ,

Every time I hear someone say AI, I know for sure they have no idea what they’re talking about and are about to grift people

Auzy ,

Yes. And I volunteer plasma every 2 weeks. Up to 25 donations in a weeks time.

Organ donation is the last honorable / good thing you can do for the world after you’ve left. You’ll be forgotten soon after dying, so might as well make it worth something

Auzy ,

For everyone who says they’re not comfortable with the idea of receiving, when you’re in a desperate situation thinking of mortality, I’m sure you’ll suddenly change your mind

Auzy ,

It’s a worse issue though. Don’t forget that companies like Sony have put literal rootkits onto their audio CD’s as part of protection. And lots of owners have gotten screwed by updated protection schemes on legitimate hardware (which is why companies like Dune HD seemed to give up)

You’re not only giving them permission to play back a movie, but, on BluRays, you give them permission to run code too on your player.

The house always wins with BluRays. They’re not cheap, they can fail prematurely, and you can’t back them up. And a lot of the companies have screwed us for decades now. It’s absolutely insane

Unless you’re buying from small companies, otherwise companies like Disney simply get more power

Auzy ,

They’re probably not paying much for the oil though.

And it is likely an act of desperation

Auzy ,

Sounds like the bf used dr Google, and likely doctors didn’t believe the symptoms matched at all

Auzy ,

Except it’s not.

Here in Australia we have preferential voting which is much better, but Biden and Trump are not the same.

Honestly, this is just the current strategy that right wingers seem to have switched to

Trump is a total psychopath who only cares about himself. He’s a criminal. The fact they’re trying hard to indict Biden, have for months but have found nothing should be a strong indicator he’s not (his son might be, but that has nothing to do with Biden, since unlike Trump’s kids, he wasn’t part of government).

Trump made it clear he would cause a insurrection months before it happened, and now he’s backed into a corner, what do you think will happen if he becomes president? He’s made it clear that he will act like a dictator

Seriously, if you guys vote Trump, it will f*** everyone. They’re not the same

Auzy , (edited )

I hope they enjoy paying interest on their taxes and fines

In general, just a stupid idea. It won’t deprive the government of any money, because you can’t just tag a random condition to your tax repayments.

This isn’t even a case of it’s never been done before. Lots of people have used every excuse to try not to pay tax.

You’re better off trying to sue the government.

Auzy , (edited )

I wonder how many adults here saw porn as a kid? If we’re being honest, probably the majority. Kids don’t find youporn unless they’re looking for it.

There is a highly effective way of preventing kids accessing porn, by being a parent and watching them (ie, put the computer in a public area) and also installing porn blockers in parallel. That’s the solution.

The problem with laws like this, is that they’re easy to abuse and they’re created by people who don’t understand technology either (so they’re happy to make tech less useful, or they’d even ban some of it entirely if they could be to level the playing field).

It’s more important to keep kids away from unsolicited porn specifically and creeps, and that can be some simply by requiring a site warning and monitoring them online
