Probably best to go with something in the 3.5" line, unless you’re going enterprise 2.5" (which are entirely different birds than consumer drives)
Whatever you get for your NAS, make sure it’s CMR and not SMR. SMR drives do not perform well in NAS arrays.
Many years ago I for some low cost 2.5" Barracuda for my servers only to find out years after I bought them that they were SMR and that may have been a contributing factor to them not being as fast as I expected.

I just want to follow this up and stress how important it is. This isn’t “oh, it kinda sucks but you can tolerate it” territory. It’s actually unusable after a certain point. I inherited a Synology NAS at my current job which is used for backup storage, and my job was to figure out why it wasn’t working anymore. After investigation, I found out the guy before me populated it with cheapo SMR drives, and after a certain point they just become literally unusable due to the ripple effect of rewrites inherent to shingled drives. I tried to format the array of five 6TB drives and start fresh, and it told me it would take 30 days to run whatever “optimization” process it performs after a format. After leaving it running for several days, I realized it wasn’t joking. During this period, I was getting around 1MB/s throughput to the system.
Do not buy SMR drives for any parity RAID usage, ever. It is fundamentally incompatible with how parity RAID (RAID5/6, ZFS RAID-Z, etc) writes across multiple disks. SMR should only be used for write-once situations, and ideally only for cold storage.
Back 4 million years the whole world really was a planet of the apes. So in some ways recognising something that wasn’t your species, but looked like it might have avoided conflict, loss of territory, loss of food…
Personally, I would be in favor of having polls because I frequently involve people in taking decisions.
But my use case is quite peculiar because (1) I need to know people’s opinion to take actions based on it, they would not be just informative polls (2) this group of people use Lemmy as their main interaction medium, no other platform is involved.
I’ve resorted to strawpoll in the past or in having comments with multiple options and relying on the most upvoted comment but these solutions have downsides.
They advertise aggressively through YouTubers/streamers. A lot of mushy brained people probably download it once just to see what their favourite e-girl is on about. Then once they realize it’s not providing them any tangible value they don’t use it, but probably leave it installed since nobody ever uninstalls apps from their phone.
That was just a bit of humour. I just mean in general whatever streamer or YouTuber someone might be watching, they are probably getting paid the VPN bucks.
Maybe leave out the E-girl thing next time, no need to single them out. Maybe it was an attempt at humor, but hating on E-girls is really popular among incels and your comment sounds a lot like the stuff they say.
I wasn’t hating on e-girls, I was goofing on the simps that idolize them, to the point of downloading a VPN app because their gamer girl parasocial gf was paid to tell them to.
Maybe don’t go around assuming everyone is an Incel unless they announce otherwise.
Should I also announce all of my political positions to you, just so you can be sure you don’t need to downvote me?
For me this was every day for over a decade. Why go to sleep early when you’ll feel shitty No matter what. As soon as you fall asleep it means you suffer all over again.
Anyways Turns out I have sleep apnea. CPAP Isn’t magic, but it has made a big difference. I know longer have a passive deathwish. If you feel like. This meme relates to you. Then maybe go get asleep. Study done and give CPAP a shot.
I am so sick of the new age of zero ownership or protections. Instead of greedy companies losing customers, other companies just see it like “oh shit we can do that too?” and consumers are the only ones losing.
I miss visible, usable scroll bars. Now they’re replaced with… nothing, because we want everything to be invisible while keeping a lot of empty space in modern designs, it seems.
My favorite is that you can’t see if content is actually off screen sometimes. No scrolbar to indicate and often those clean lines just look like the end of the content. Horrible
