What would you need a blanket for when you've got a fort?

Twentytwodividedby7 , to memes in Vandals

This was not the Vandals, it was the Visigoths led by Alaric I. The sacking of Rome followed years of rights being stripped away from tribal peoples as a new Cesar transitioned from a period of equality where the tribes enjoyed Roman status, to Emporer Honorius who stripped all that away. This also led to a period of famine and terrible treatment where they were viewed as barbarians, when in fact many left their Pagan ways behind to become Christians.

Alaric I himself was denied a generalship in the regular Roman army, an accomplishment that would have been granted before Horonius.

So, no, comparing this sniveling group of Trump Terds to the Visigoths is wholly inaccurate. It would be more correct to compare it to Native A.erican wars that followed the Trail of Tears, or any of the many atrocities we committed against native peoples.

www.worldhistory.org/…/sack-of-rome-410-ce/#:~:te….

DragonTypeWyvern ,

I’d been generally aware that Rome had it coming, but I didn’t realize exactly how bad the “Rome fell because it incorporated non-Romans into the military” revisionism was. That puts a very, very different spin both on the sack of Rome and the revisionism itself.

Twentytwodividedby7 ,

There is an excellent book called “Alaric the Goth” by Douglas Boin that goes into a great amount of detail into the cultural shift. A big shift was when Honorius stripped freedom of religion away, this served to move Roman society towards Christianity and reinforced the view of the tribes as barbarians.

And correct, actually incorporating non-Romans into the military was a great way for those tribes to attain a stable life after since they enjoyed the same benefits as Roman soldiers for their service. When that was stripped away, they also would be subjected to terrible treatment and often had poor provisions.

Oh yeah, gotta keep it dolphin-with-a-brazilian smooth. The trick is to skip the shaving, waxing and Nair style stuff. Just use a Zippo and burn the hairs off. Baby smooth in no time.

I know that headline must be incredibly infuriating for a public like lemmy, * but *, personally I have some conflicts about the whole retirement concept since it starts a chain of cognitive decline and isolation (this is a source but there are many more: bmcgeriatr.biomedcentral.com/…/s12877-017-0556-7)

I’m not saying that people should be working forever, I just wonder if there could be some optional way for some elder people to contribute to society in a way that feels meaningful? Are there jobs where they could fit and have that feeling of fulfillment? Understand that I have met a fair amount of old people that felt useless and was just “waiting to die” in a depressive way. In some ways jobs can be a source of happiness if people isn’t being exploited. What I’m thinking about would be optional and with less hours involved

On the other hand, maybe what I’m describing is not necessarily a “job position for old people” per se, maybe if we as a society invested more in quality of life for the elder I believe we could make them happier. I feel terrible that we’re barely doing anything for the loneliness problem…

udon ,

A cool project idea that popped up a few years ago in China was a home-to-home food delivery service. Basically, a grandmother whose grandchild lives in another city can cook her grandma-level food and the delivery guys would pick it up and bring it to students in the area. Probably embedded in an extractive economic model, but the core idea was quite nice.

udon ,

In Japan I see many elderly guys work as traffic assistants, eg to help children get to school safely. Can be annoying at times and I don’t know how/if they get paid, but definitely gives them something to do and connects them to other people.

Chocrates ,

Lots of non profits are desperate for people. The elderly don’t have to camp on jobs that the young need for fear of having nothing to do.

eldritch_horror , to nostupidquestions in Why do christian apologists say the name of the person they're talking to so often? (crosspost from asklemmy)

It’s a conversation technique. Like, in debate or psychology or something. It’s intended to get in your head. If a person employs it then… that says something about them.

SnotFlickerman , to nostupidquestions in Why do christian apologists say the name of the person they're talking to so often? (crosspost from asklemmy)

It’s often said that people like to hear their own name, so once you know someones name, if you want them to like you, use their name frequently when addressing them.

But I mean, when you’re apologizing for a violent death cult, I guess it helps to use as many cheap psychological tricks as you can to justify all the fucking abuse, gaslighting, and hate.

AmidFuror , (edited )

Repetition, personality mirroring, and never breaking off a handshake.

eldritch_horror , (edited )

Speaking as a guy who often gets lost in a conversation and can’t think of what to do or say, personality mirroring is my goto. It makes conversations easy. Just copy them. Gotten positive results.

also, about the handshake. So you just hold the guy’s hand until he gets uncomfortable a pulls away? I haven’t tried that.
