The far right has been ruling my country for 2 years now. Their campaigns have been specifically targeting Muslim migrants (even foreign workers, because they can marry locals, become citizens and generate offspring and other bullsh1t)… but looking at the facts and not the propaganda, this government has quietly more than doubled the number or yearly visas released for work reasons, just to say “look we cut irregular migration to a minimum”.

EU approval for chat control (www.patrick-breyer.de)

We need to do something against this. The EU plans to apply a law for a chat control in the territory. The approval say that all the chats and the emails would be send to the government to do AI scanning to in fact “find the children abuses”, even when using apps with end-to-end encryption (the EU will ask the services to...

Maybe try to seduce policemen being better at sexting?

DieguiTux8623 ,

I agree in that Summit is the most feature complete and polished Lemmy client for Android.

DieguiTux8623 ,

As a European I can reassure you: younger generations aren’t considered by politics (and in turn young people don’t consider politics at all and don’t even go to vote, abstentionsism is skyrocketing). The headline is a little exaggerated.

DieguiTux8623 ,

far-right, far-left and populist movements

Isn’t this how it is supposed to work? Why should anyone’s voice be silenced if all opinions are worth the same?

DieguiTux8623 ,

Yes I agree with you, of course, in theory it should work like this. But all around me I see things going so terribly wrong, so I assume practice must be somewhat different from the theory.

E.g. in my country far-right politicians have been democratically elected and they are dismantling the nation and changing the constitution, all legally.

Edit: Nobody is giving a f-ck neither internally nor externally (e.g. OTAN or EU) so I assume they are fine with it too.

DieguiTux8623 ,

The EU elections will play a decisive role in shaping this trend, those politicians who have exposed ideas about it, creating e.g. a common defense system, seem to have completely lost any contact with the reality of what citizens need and wish for their future.

DieguiTux8623 ,

I don’t know why, but if I figure in my head him telling that word with his voice and his Argentinian accent it sounds almost funny.

Since he is a foreigner, I assume he does not fully understand how vulgar and derogatory that term is in Italian. The result is “hilarious”, because as a native you realize he didn’t mean to use that word, like e.g. when a child uses a swear word thinking it is in the right context while it’s not.

DieguiTux8623 ,

The customers of those two banks should express their gratitude to their governments!

DieguiTux8623 ,

Yes, true!

DieguiTux8623 ,

Oh mon dieu, l’empire colonial Français!

DieguiTux8623 ,

If anything like this had happened in my country, it would have backfired very badly in the following elections.

DieguiTux8623 ,

That’s in Italy (Milan) and it is due to lack of public funds to pay for monument restoration.

DieguiTux8623 ,

Or the Municipality of Milan, which is from an opposition party and in continuous struggle with the central government (and the regional one).

DieguiTux8623 ,

I agree in that the failure to address socio-economic issues by who has been in charge until now fuels the resentment/frustration/urge for “quick and dirty” solutions people are looking for in alt-right parties. Until they realize having been deceived because things change for the worse and, which is more important, the establishment is not going to change.

DieguiTux8623 ,

Same, its existence gives me a little of hope even in the toughest moments. I don’t care if people aren’t always nice/polite, you have to deal with it IRL or on any online platform.

Lemmy has always been a sort of “cure” for me, listening to different people’s opinions and learning something new or a new perspective on things every day.

DieguiTux8623 ,

It is a country without future, and there is no hope for the situation to improve any time soon. Extremely low wages, no affordable housing, healthcare unavailable and poor access to education/services in general but high taxation. It would be crazy to expect anyone to plan to have a family!

DieguiTux8623 ,

Remove the “will” and “then” because they are already doing it! 😅

EU restates readiness to launch trade war with China over cheap imports (www.theguardian.com)

The European Commission chief said she was “convinced that if the competition is fair” from China, then Europe “will have thriving durable economies”. But she said the “imbalances” caused by state support for Chinese industry leading to cut-cost products threatened jobs in Europe, and that was “a matter of great...

DieguiTux8623 ,

Why not everything else too (electronic hardware, toys, clothes, etc…)?

DieguiTux8623 ,

It’s not a “fine” but a XIX century protectionistic measure which is unlikely to help anyone (except making people poorer because higher prices mean higher expenditure for consumers). And from here to the next inflation spiral there is just a small step…

DieguiTux8623 ,

I don’t think there is a solution for European economy. Better be prepared for the worst rather than living with the illusion that these tricks may work.

DieguiTux8623 ,

And if imported goods have cheap prices due to ignoring labor rights, worker safety and environmental protection it is acceptable… This is hypocrite and really does not deserve further comments.

Would Lemmy Benefit from Implementing Polls? (slrpnk.net)

A popular way of dealing with discussions, and familiar to most people, I assume. As far as I see it, adding a poll system to Lemmy is a good way to enhance user engagement. I’m not really aware if this has been a topic before or not, tried looking it up but didn’t see much juice on the topic, so thought I’d spark it up....

DieguiTux8623 ,

Personally, I would be in favor of having polls because I frequently involve people in taking decisions.

But my use case is quite peculiar because (1) I need to know people’s opinion to take actions based on it, they would not be just informative polls (2) this group of people use Lemmy as their main interaction medium, no other platform is involved.

I’ve resorted to strawpoll in the past or in having comments with multiple options and relying on the most upvoted comment but these solutions have downsides.

DieguiTux8623 ,

Italian here: our “centre right” is actively on restricting abortion, dismantling public healthcare and education, deportation of immigrants, isolation of disabled students, eliminating LGBT rights and militarizing public spaces (with already students/protesters beaten by the police in several occasions) and of course jailing journalists and controlling the public media.

The only thing that sets them apart from their US equivalent is child labor, but they already have prevented the approval of minimum wages and other social safety net measures.

DieguiTux8623 ,

We don’t need any external help, we can sabotage ourselves on our own!

DieguiTux8623 ,

Me too, and Lemmy inspired me to unsub! 😉

DieguiTux8623 ,

And not only will prices skyrocket, but also (at least in countries that allow it) agriculture businesses will take public money as restoration for the loss.

DieguiTux8623 ,

You’re right, my bad! The silver lining is that at least it may induce people to reduce consumption of unhealthy products and prefer quality over quantity.

Bird flu has now jumped to cows - and their milk. Could humans be next? (www.sciencefocus.com)

A strain of bird flu known as H5N1 or highly pathogenic avian influenza has made a worrying leap to cattle herds across the US over the past month. This development has sparked “enormous concern” among health experts, including the World Health Organization’s (WHO) chief scientist, who warned of the virus’ “extremely...

DieguiTux8623 ,

Oh no, and the “return to office” policies?/s

DieguiTux8623 ,

They can still support the US, as all of them have done for the last 79 years and are doing still now.

DieguiTux8623 ,

I upvoted your comment, because I like the underlying idea that Europe has been “protected” so far because they could not sustain themselves, which is absolutely true. But the previous order collapsing isn’t necessarily bad.

DieguiTux8623 ,

Once I was told that I deserved to be fired and, another time, I was told that I am unable to think properly so I shouldn’t work as a software developer.

Both remarks were quite painful because they were not questioning my ideas/opinions but my professional abilities. I confess that in my “down” moments those thoughts tend to pop up even years later.

DieguiTux8623 ,

Needless to say, in neither case the discussion originated from a technical issue, both times we were arguing online about politics.

DieguiTux8623 ,

I can not “unsee” it any more, thanks.

DieguiTux8623 ,

In my previous job, when the leadership imposed a culture change we weren’t happy with, a bunch of people just quit. We were replaced by new employees that are completely fine with it, but we moved to other companies where we feel more at ease, so it was a win-win.

China faces more scrutiny from the West over its aggressive export practices — overcapacity and huge subsidies. (www.dw.com)

Chinese firms can often undercut their Western counterparts for many reasons, including cheaper labor and economies of scale. But they also benefit from very generous state incentives, which help to make foreign rivals uncompetitive....

DieguiTux8623 ,

I have already started hearing protectionistic proclaims about Chinese EVs in Europe. Sounds awkward when every single piece of technological hardware is made there and nobody has ever complained for decades. But when businessmen see their domain under threat they become aggressive.

DieguiTux8623 ,

Here in Italy they have been smarter… even if some parties received funds linked to “United Russia”, they declared it was in the “pre-war” era, so unrelated to any criminal purpose.

DieguiTux8623 ,

Me neither, but it’s a news of what happened yesterday when a minister had to face a motion of no-confidence (obviously they were confirmed) and used this justification.

Lesson learned: don’t consider Italy a democratic country. It belongs more to middle east than to the EU. 🤣

Cocoa prices hit $10,000 per metric ton for the first time ever (www.cnbc.com)

Difficult weather conditions and disease have affected production in West Africa, which produces about 70% of the world’s cocoa. The two largest producers, Ivory Coast and Ghana, have been hit by a combination of heavy rain, dry heat and disease recently....

The poor getting poorer and the rich getting richer, same old story.

Does Reddit shadowban mentions of Lemmy?

In the months since I deleted my Reddit accounts and joined Lemmy, the lack of user base growth has made it clear that we need some users to stay on Reddit as a means of shepherding more users over on an ongoing basis. Otherwise, Reddit simply got what it wanted: less users who make a fuss about how it manages its platform...

DieguiTux8623 ,

If the back end provided support for multi-communities it would work cross-app in the same way… unfortunately it looks like this is not a priority for the time being.
