I really don’t want to have to go back to torrenting, but it seems that’s the only option if they keep pushing like this. I’m a camera operator, I work in the industry, my livelihood depends on movies being made. But racketeering the viewers is not how you’ll sustain an industry. Sure it’ll raise your quarterly report but it will damage your business deeply. Producers are cutting themselves a slice bigger every day, both from the viewers and the workers (look at the writers and actors strikes). We can’t make art in a system dictated by instant guaranteed returns and viewers aren’t stupid enough to pay hundreds of dollars to watch the same low effort shit over and over. The film industry NEEDS TO CHANGE!!!

kamen ,

The film industry NEEDS TO CHANGE

Agree, and I’d add that it’s not just the film industry. It’s mostly the same shit all throughout entertainment industry as a whole. Take video games for example - each year there are assumingly AAA titles coming out half cooked at release and yet they cost more than they ever have. Thank you very much, I’d much rather just wait a year for you to fix all those bugs and I’ll buy the game at 80% off if it’s any good.

LazaroFilm ,
@LazaroFilm@lemmy.world avatar

I blame it on investors quarterly reports. Movies and games take years to make. For a movie is usually 1-2years pre production 2-4 months filming 1-3 years post production. So you will see a net loss for all this time. Same with games. It’s years in the making but they want quarterly returns not possible.

kamen ,

Well, what do they expect? Of course there won’t be much (if any) revenue before release. If you built trust in the audience that you ship quality products from day 1, maybe more people will preorder, but the way it is now it’s rather the opposite.

LazaroFilm ,
@LazaroFilm@lemmy.world avatar

Yep. But the divide between the people providing the funds and the people making the product is very real.

It does make sense to have the person who wants the tow to pay for it rather than the whole extortion racket it becomes when the owner of the car pays for it. schmidtster ,

Around here if it’s a parking lot, management has to call it in, simple as that. Management fines or gets their money from the renter. If it’s your vehicle, well you would have your insurance and parking spot title if you needed a service tow.

And for some time, other devices did as well. And then they changed it. Would some other term than “walking back” describe “they offered a good deal to customers, and then changed it to a less good deal” better for you?

Do you like work for Google or something? Probably not. The handful of people I’ve met who work there aren’t nearly this zealous about defending it.

Polar ,

They never, ever, ever, advertised other devices as having lifetime unlimited uploads for original quality. Show me where they said that.

They do still have unlimited, though. So not sure what you’re complaining about? Like I genuinely don’t. Both promises were kept.

jjjalljs ,

Are you hanging your entire argument on the word “lifetime”?

From their announcement

Starting June 1, 2021, any new photos and videos you upload will count toward the free 15 GB of storage that comes with every Google Account or the additional storage you’ve purchased as a Google One member. Your Google Account storage is shared across Drive, Gmail and Photos. This change also allows us to keep pace with the growing demand for storage. And, as always, we uphold our commitment to not use information in Google Photos for advertising purposes. We know this is a big shift and may come as a surprise, so we wanted to let you know well in advance and give you resources to make this easier.

From this you can infer photos prior to June 21 2021 did not count against the storage. And now they do. Making the product worse for users.

Except they don’t. Try reading the screenshots I sent you?

Maybe stop fucking pouting like an entitled brat and open your damn eyes and read for a change? Holy shit.

Immich is on a par with Google Photos, imo. It’s self hosted though, so not for everyone.

Yeah I have an immich instance myself, and do plan on relying more on that as I max out my Google drive size.

The bigger issue I gave with that is remote backup still imposes a cost, and like you said you gotta know what you’re doing to safely expose that to the Internet.

fiddlestix ,

That is true. I only use mine locally, so it’s not a problem. Although you can remote access via Tailscale for safety. It’s quicker and easier than trying to set up remote proxies etc, about which I know nothing. Tailscale took 5 mins.

lustrum ,

Does it? It’s a fantastic service that works really well, whether it’s worth the price or privacy is a slightly different conversation

ZiemekZ ,

whether it’s worth the price

You don’t have to pay Google a penny. I bought a quite cheap (50-60$) used but working Pixel 1 XL specifically for unlimited lifetime full-quality Google Photos upload.

bitflag ,

I personally love it. Being able to search “Tom at the beach drinking a cocktail” and get all the relevant pictures is magic.

jjjalljs ,

You got me! Android came after maps in 2008. So that’s not a great argument for recent development. Is pixel meaningfully different than Nexus? That would put it in 2010, or 2016 if you insist pixel is a big innovation.

Chromebooks are also a 2010 project.

Google pay I don’t think is a success? Didn’t they like relaunch it recently and shit it up by tying it to phone numbers instead of your Google account? arstechnica.com/…/google-pays-disastrous-year-con… arstechnica.com/…/google-pay-hopes-to-recover-fro… . Also the original release is 2011. Quite some time ago. But technically newer than maps!

Drive is 2012. Dang, got me. But that’s still more than 10 years old, so my actual point seems to stand.

Chromecast is 2013, so maybe within this decade.

Auto is 2015 but I know nothing about it.

I guess I should’ve said “in the past 7 years” instead of exaggerating and saying since maps!

bitflag ,

But all “successes” are gonna be years old. You don’t turn something like Chromebook into an overnight success. It takes years for an ecosystem to grow, users to find use cases, software revisions to polish the product, word of mouth, etc.

For comparison the Apple watch came out in 2015 and Airpods in 2016. What other successes has Apple had in the past 7 years? Maybe their AR thing will take off, but if it does it’s probably 5-10 years from becoming a mass market product.

NeuronautML ,

Android is developed by a consortium of developers called The Open Handset Alliance under an open source license. It is most certainly not a Google product, any more than Linux is a Canonical product. As in, they help develop it but it’s not their product.

bitflag ,

That is really playing with words… Android (the OS people run on their phone) was originally developed by a company bought by Google, which then funded it, made the overwhelming number of contributions to it for 19 years, does the marketing, certification plus all the non-open source elements that make the experience what 99.99% of users get everyday when they use their phone.

floppade , (edited )

Most of their innovation has been for developers it seems.

psycho_driver ,

Yeah but they had that big movie deal to get working on, had to put a bow on it.

gravitas_deficiency ,

The thing that still blows my mind is that they evidently could not comprehend that pulling this sort of bullshit would have sharply negative effects on their future in all of showbusiness. Like, they had a Star Wars movie signed. That’s still a bit of a thing nowadays, and when they got it, it was an even bigger deal. And they spiked it because they couldn’t be fucked to put in the effort to give one of the most popular TV series EVER a reasonably meaningful, satisfying, and well-written conclusion.

Globulart ,

Even if we get nothing else from those last seasons, at the very least it’ll serve as a warning to show runners in future. You can be responsible for one of the biggest and best shows ever but if you don’t stick the landing people will never forgive you.

FooBarrington ,

I feel so sorry for the actors and other people who worked on the show, besides D and D of course. Imagine being part of the biggest TV thing ever and having incredible success, only for it all to fall apart towards the end, completely removing the thing from public consciousness.

gravitas_deficiency ,

Man, remember when they had the cast do that media blitz for the final season, and Peter Dinklage was just giving off Hide The Pain Harold vibes for the whole interview? That must have been rough :(

FooBarrington ,

Yeah, that must have been brutal. Some of the actors let a couple of negative sentences slip during those interviews, but I’m sure they weren’t allowed to.

I don’t know if a single clip shows this better than the reaction of Varys’ actor to his characters death. Just imagine having to sit at a table WITH THE SHITHEADS THAT ARE RESPONSIBLE for butchering an amazing character you should be remembered for, and not being able to say anything. Fuck.

gravitas_deficiency ,

It was so frustrating because the actors kinda obviously all gave a shit and wanted the show to be good, and D&D just… didn’t.

FooBarrington ,

Absolutely, they still tried to do their best. Makes it all the more disheartening when they really couldn’t influence the end result.

YourFavouriteNPC ,
@YourFavouriteNPC@feddit.de avatar

You’ve got it all wrong! It was actually an incredibly genius move, as the writers knew that after 7 seasons of twists, turns and surprises, the audience wouldn’t really be phased by any characters death anymore. We’d become so accustomed to sudden character deaths that watching GoT became the literal incarnation of “expect the unexpected” and you can’t shock people who are just waiting for it to happen. So what did the showrunners do? They did the only thing nobody expected, assassinated the only target they knew would still get a reaction out of people after all this time - they killed off the show itself.

Nurse_Robot ,
