Yeah it was odd to read that description being presented as an oddity - that sounds like most households I know. If you have a wife, kids, or roommate and don’t enjoy being holed up in your own room the whole time you play (and those sharing your house don’t just want to watch you game all night) then in house streaming is a huge boon.

I PC game, but most of my gaming is done on the couch, streamed onto my phone. I’ve been very tempted to buy a dedicated streaming device lately to avoid draining my phone battery while playing

bitsplease ,

Lol, would love to hear why on earth this is downvoted - guess we’re in full on reddit mode and just downvoting everything that isn’t exactly what I think lol

bitsplease ,

Right… and no generation since has ever seen the value of owning property, right? Lol.

Are you under the impression that modern renters are choosing to rent instead of own?

60% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck making saving for a down payment impossible for over half the country, and with rates being what they are, mortgages are expensive af.

People are renting because it’s the only way to live, not because they think it’s neat. People are getting upset at you not because you’re pointing out that rent is a scam, but because you’re implying it’s the fault of the victims

bitsplease ,

Have you tried just making more money?

Jeez, you poors are just so lazy.

(I really wish this weren’t needed, but I think it is) \s

bitsplease ,

With your current phone, go ahead and take two pictures - one normal, the other a picture of a picture of that thing

Now look at the two, and tell me you can’t tell in a split second that one is a picture of a picture. There’s a reason that it’s a running joke on the internet that people need to learn to take real screenshot instead of taking a picture of the monitor - there’s always annoying and obvious artifacts.

bitsplease ,

Except smart phone cameras will also improve - if anything, I’d say that over the last decade, the average smart phone camera has improved at a much faster rate than your average computer monitor.

Combine what I said with all the other Metadata that will be collected, and I’m quite skeptical that you could fool an actual professional with your scheme.

Yeah and while I’m sure it is useful for minimizing outrage at controversial changes, it’s mainly to prevent rolling out major bugs to too many people

The lack of "real world complaints" and "anger" in popular music genres helps keep the masses docile

Been thinking a bit about this, popular music (the ones that hit top 100 charts or whatever) never has lyrics that point out real problems or point to culprits and how they’re fucking our shit, which is very easy to find in punk rock and some variations, as well as rap....

bitsplease ,

Yeah, popular music - by definition - is going to have a broad appeal, and pointing out major problems with our society is always going to be at least a bit divisive, especially when the issue is split in party lines

boarding first isn’t a privilege really

It is on southwest, since there’s no unassigned boarding. I’m a tall dude, and I always pay for early boarding so I can get myself an emergency row seat

Yeah, remember the reaction when that one post got popular about lemmy being boring for anyone that wasn’t a SWE/Linux user?

People got so pissed off, one of the top posts on lemmy that day was something to the affect of “fuck you, we’re not obligated to post things you like”. Which, yeah, you’re not - but you also can’t blame people for losing interest in your platform when you only have active discussion on one or two relatively niche topics.

The fact is that Lemmy is garbage for discussing hobbys or interests outside of a few niche areas. On reddit my feed was filled with woodworking, 3d printing, Astronomy, and other topics that get very little traffic on lemmy.

My lemmy feed is mostly politics, then SWE stuff, then memes

I doubt they even hope the judge will agree, they’re just doing it for the sake of his base. It’s been his prime defense the whole time - the fact that it’s bullshit doesn’t matter, because as far as his base is concerned, if Trump said it, it’s true

bitsplease ,

It’s one of those things that sounds dumb at first glance, but actually has a lot of sound reasoning behind it, read up on it more if you’re interested

bitsplease ,

I’m kind of the same, I rarely wear deodorant, and it’s basically never an issue (believe me, my wife would tell me if it was)

But some days even I’m like “holy fuck I reek” - I think it’s probably a diet thing

bitsplease ,

Internet comments aren’t interested in logic if they can dunk on a group they don’t like lol

bitsplease ,

True, but Its 100% possible for us to get knocked back into the iron age, and if that happens, there’s a very real chance we won’t be able to climb up again.

Easy to access sources of a lot of the resources needed to rebuild a modern civilization are gone, the only reason we can get to the remaining deposits is because we already have the advanced equipment to extract it. It’s entirely possible that if we get knocked back down the tech ladder, we may never climb back up again

bitsplease ,

Dissappear? No, of course not

Fall out of repair, and be unable to be repaired effectively without tools, resources, or knowledge that are no longer accessible?

Abso-fucking-lutely

Take a deep sea oil rig. How long do you think it’ll be operational without maintenance with all that sea water? After not too long you won’t be able to repair the damage without serious industrial capabilities, and that’s assuming you even know how to fix it.

Really even as relatively little as a few decades of total chaos and disorganization would be enough to make crawling back really hard. A century and more and it really could be impossible, or at least improbable - especially given that the humanity that comes out of the other end of the crisis is the same one that got us into it. So the remaining pieces of major valuable infrastructure left will probably get wrecked as the survivors fight over them

bitsplease ,

This is 100% it, there’s already so much “bad” footage out there that no one is going to change their mind about jan 6 if more comes to light. But they’re hoping to find a few clips that make it look good that they can play on a loop on fox News

bitsplease ,

Why is this downvoted lol

Is it bad to not know every artist now?

bitsplease ,

I’m not saying he’s a nobody, but it’s not exactly downvote worthy to not know him lol, I’ll bet there are plenty of people I’d consider well know that you’re not familiar with too 🤷🏼‍♂️

bitsplease ,

Yeah, I agree it’s pretty cringy, but I don’t see how anyone else is negatively impacted by some lonely souls using it

bitsplease ,

I don’t know why people (not saying you, more directed at the top commenter) keep acting like cherry picking AI images in these studies invalidate the results - cherry picking is how you use AI image generation tools, that’s why most will (or can) generate several at once so you can pick the best one. If a malicious actor was trying to fool people, of course they’d use the most “real” looking ones, instead of just the first to generate

Frankly the studies would be useless if they didn’t cherry pick, because it wouldn’t line up with real world usage

bitsplease ,

The way it sounds right now is “AI generated faces don’t have all these artifacts 99% of the time” (I’m paraphrasing A LOT, but you get what I mean.)

The only way it sounds like that is if you don’t read the article at all and draw all your conclusions from just reading the title.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure many do just that, but that’s not the fault of the study. They clearly state their method for selecting (or “cherry picking”) images

bitsplease ,

And idiots going to the ER because they didn’t wear their seat belts just raise premiums for the rest of us (or increase the tax burden in countries with socialized Healthcare)

bitsplease ,

my property is now worth 5x what it was worth when I bought it… in today’s money. Adjusted for inflation, it’s not nearly as much

Are you under the impression that the US dollar has 5xd from inflation since the 90s? Lol

Seriously, I don’t know what reaction you’re expecting here - if you’re finding that being a landlord is a shitty way to make money, then… Stop? Sell the apartment and invest in something else instead of whining about how badly landlords are mistreated lol

bitsplease ,

they have the power and wealth to affect a lot of day to day life regardless if you’re ignoring it or not.

This is true, but my opinion of both of them is already rock bottom, so why spend time listening to something that’s just going to make me frustrated, while not actually giving me any new info?

bitsplease ,

Thanks for the suggestion, but pass - it’ll just make me mad at both of them for no reason. I don’t need insight on their ego, I already know they’re both narcissistic pieces of shit who think they’re saving the world as they burn it down

bitsplease ,

Because when supply chains got fucked up during COVID, they raised their prices for legitimate reasons, and found to their delight that people kept on buying, and In fact, because people were panic shopping, and stuck at home bored, they actually bought more.

So when things calmed down, instead of lowering prices, they continued to rise. because if they didn’t, they’d be making less profit than last quarter (which is unacceptable)

Combine that with the wage stagnation that’s been going on for decades and a housing shortage and you now have an economy where people can’t afford rent, food, or basic goods

bitsplease ,

I’m terrified for our next junior dev hire if this is common among beginners now lol

bitsplease ,

How would you know? You don’t actually understand the code. It could be making shit up, and you’d never have any idea

Seriously dude, if you run into code you don’t understand, take the time to actually understand it, or else you’ll never actually improve

bitsplease , (edited )

Yeah, but they were brown doctors and children, so it’s OK

Edit: did I really need a /s?

bitsplease ,

Yeah honestly hearing it describes as being full of neo Nazis is wild lol, it’s almost more left leaning than Lemmy

bitsplease ,

100% agree, without it, the decentralization aspect is severely weakened

bitsplease ,

So pretty much the same as prosumer cameras - from what I understand, a decent lens can cost easily as much or more than the actual DSLR

bitsplease ,

calling themselves life coaches teach other people to be life coaches so they can teach more life coaches?

This accounts for a lot of it - the rest is mostly just getting hired by people who are too broke to afford someone actually qualified, and drastically overstating your success up until that point (E.G. Say you were an Entrepreneur when you really just lost money on an MLM)

bitsplease ,

This isn’t an ad. It’s just an opportunity to purchase something

I really hope this is satire, but I honestly can’t tell anymore lol

bitsplease ,

It’s pretty wild how many people in this thread (and in general) don’t see youtubers as a business selling a product.

Its great if you want to buy stuff from your favorite content creators shop, but the shop is there to make money. It makes money for their business. What do we call it when a business goes out of their way to show consumers their products in the hopes that they’ll purchase something? an advertisement. This isn’t something debatable lol, it’s literally the definition of the word.

Its awesome if you wanna support your favorite content creators, it’s totally OK if you don’t personally mind seeing their shop below the video, a simple toggle would let you keep that. But an ad is an ad, and people are right to be frustrated that they’re being shown ads when they specifically paid extra money not to be shown them.

The first handheld that shipped with the ability to suspend was a gamechanger for me as a kid

bitsplease ,

I too would like context on that comment lol

bitsplease ,

Hell, even if you’re liberal in a lot of corners in this site

bitsplease ,

Where else is there to go if you want a mobile friendly link aggregator?

bitsplease ,

What’s the benefit of a cruise ship when planes are so much faster?

Its not always about purely practical concerns

bitsplease ,

So, in your opinion - in order for Zelensky to not be a dictator, he has to break all the existing rules of law in order to completely replace the existing constitution? And he should be allowed to do this unilaterally? And this would make him not a dictator? He’s not a fucking monarch dude, he’s the elected head of state - he doesn’t have supreme authority to do whatever the fuck he feels like.

The foundation of democracy is the idea that our elected officials have to abide by the rules of law that are already in place, including (and especially) those laws that concern how other laws are made. Otherwise any elected official could just declare themselves the new supreme ruler and toss out every law that limits their power.

And that’s all putting aside the question of how you would even hold an election in war ravaged Ukraine right now, a significant portion of which is under hostile occupation lol

bitsplease ,

Irrelevant, since my critique actually has nothing to do with Ukraine, but about constitutions in general.

So you’re advocating for him to break the constitution he was elected to uphold, to hold an election that would have to be incomplete and unfair - all so that you, a person who isn’t even a Ukrainian can feel better about the situation? Despite the fact that there’s no call for this from the actual Ukranian public?

That’s certainly an opinion to have lol

Eating healthy

For some reason the general consensus is that eating healthy is expensive - probably because when people think about eating healthy, they’re often thinking about Whole Foods type shit.

My wife and I have been losing weight over these last few months (40lbs down!) and one of the biggest things I noticed besides the number on the scale was how much less we were spending on food.

For one, you’ll generally eat out less, because most of the really tempting restaurant options aren’t that healthy

For another veggies, legumes, etc are cheap af, and those make up a huge part of a healthy diet. We buy our veggies in bulk from costco each week save a ton compared to when we’d be loading our carts with butter/cheese, fatty/sugary snack foods, and other r junk

We also just plain eat less, what we used to eat in a night now stretches to two nights, which means fewer trips to the grocery store.

We do eat more lean proteins (mainly chicken and fish) to bump our protein ratios up, and we buy protein powders and whatnot, but even accounting for all that, we’re still saving a lot of money compared to our old habits

bitsplease ,

I’ve definetely saved myself many purchases with my 3d printer, but I definetely think I’ve spent more on filament for dumb/fun prints than I’ve saved with practical ones lol - especially when I’m designing my own shit and need to prototype, I’ve gone through entire rolls just iterating on a single design until I get something I’m happy with…

That being said, it’s all in how you use it!

bitsplease ,

I started during COVID for practical reasons, but it’s so simple and quick I don’t think I’ll ever go back - I just grabbed a $40 pair of plug in Wahl clippers and I’ve probably saved myself at least a grand by now in haircuts
