Wendigo
Mythical creature

Wendigo is a mythological creature or evil spirit originating from Algonquian folklore. The concept of the wendigo has been widely used in literature and other works of art, such as social commentary and horror fiction. The wendigo is often said to be a malevolent spirit, sometimes depicted as a creature with human-like characteristics, which possesses human beings. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wendigo

hex_m_hell ,

They’re not exactly mythical. It’s also a description of a type of psychosis that leads to cannibalism.

activ8r ,

Seems skeptical, at best, if the psychosis is even real and not just a retroactive diagnosis based on third hand story telling.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wendigo

Either way the mythical creature came first.

hex_m_hell ,

No, the indigenous people who created the “mythical creature” say that they mean it literally to describe a real thing and that thing is the psychosis. The modern diagnosis comes from their description of the psychosis.

kautau ,

Food gets weird when societies are running low on it. The UK loves plain canned beans in tomato sauce, which afaik came out of wartime necessity. Biscuits and gravy have a similar history with wartime necessity from the US revolutionary war. Some populations eat SPAM way more than others due to its wartime benefit as basic canned protein becoming a cultural tradition where US troops were stationed.

Sagifurius ,

yeah but have you ever had UK spec canned beans? those things are really good. Ive been annoyed half my life those exact beans are produced in Canada and exported under contract to the UK, the store beans we get here are shit, and there’s actually a black market gets UK spec canned beans back to canada, where they were fucking made.

kautau ,

I have not, tbh I’m not a huge fan of beans in tomato sauce. But I now will add “international black market bean smuggler” to my list of outlandish careers that I would try if the barrier to entry wasn’t so high.

4 is peak for me. The only thing I dislike about 4 is the unit stacking making it hard to know if a unit is just 1 unit or 20 dudes in the same spot.

kinther ,
@kinther@lemmy.world avatar

Back in the day I used to check out civfanatics.com for mods. There were tons for Civ4:BTS that made it so much cooler. After playing that and then playing Civ5, I was incredibly disappointed. Civ6 is better, but not by much. I still go back to Civ4 when I need my “one more turn” fix.

SuddenDownpour ,

Fall from Heaven 2? Rise of Mankind? Caveman to Cosmos? Rhyes and Falls of Civilization? Dawn of Mankind? Planetfall? Mars Now? How about all of them at once?

Civ 4 was a goddamn library of 4X games. I still reinstall it after every few years.

JackbyDev ,

I hated the stacks. Idk why, but it was always confusing how big they should be. When they can’t stack it makes more sense to me. How many troops do I need? As many as I can fit.

Kolanaki ,
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

Just enough to encircle the thing I want to eliminate/capture. It actually works with a stack, too. Like 8 dudes is enough for the default difficulty most of the time.

MacNCheezus OP ,
@MacNCheezus@lemmy.today avatar

wesker ,
@wesker@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

you could put all those things on a plate and eat them like a person.

That’s very civilized of you to use a plate when you eat people.

Signtist ,

Honestly, I like the fact that I could hold and eat this while doing other things at a BBQ. It would also be useful if there’s not a lot of seating for everyone.

I am a sucker for turning normally-sweet treats into savory ones, though - I turned my cinnamon rolls recipe into a cheesy rolls recipe a few years ago, and I consider it one of the best ideas I’ve ever had, so maybe it’s just me.

Norgur ,
@Norgur@fedia.io avatar

But this isn't "making a treat savory", this is "put things you'd normally eat as a regular dish, put them into a plastic cup and pretend it's revolutionary".

Signtist ,

Looks like a savory parfait to me.

Norgur ,
@Norgur@fedia.io avatar

Is it frozen? No? Why should it be a parfait then? Just because something looks vaguely like something else, it's not that thing. Gravy can look like chocolate sauce, so can I call my meat "pork au chocolat" then?"

Signtist ,

Frozen? Every parfait I’ve had has just been yogurt with berries and jam in it. Also, yes, if you use chocolate sauce instead of gravy, you can absolutely call it pork au chocolat. It would probably be better if you switched out the pork for something like pancakes, but you do you; one of the best things about food is that you can do whatever you want with it.

AngryCommieKender ,

Plates aren’t very portable. That can fit in a cupholder.

BottleOfAlkahest ,

I’ve had one that used baked beans in place of the pork. It was delicious. From the examples I’ve seen the cup started from food trucks where it was more convenient to had out a cup than a plate. Now restaurants are picking up the cup thing cause it’s a “trend”.

kzhe , to lemmyshitpost in When Hexbear finds out Nazi stands for National Socialism

Hexbeara are definitely wrong about things… But I have never seen them do anti-Semitism. And the Nazis really can’t be considered socialist— you can disapprove of socialism without lying or being misinformed and claiming that the Nazis were socialist—Hitler essentially joined and took over what maybe at some point was a pro worker party. They killed like a lot of communists.

FiniteBanjo OP ,

They support the current treatment of Tibet and Uighurs in China, they also support Putin in the war. They think NATO and the UN is a threat to world peace.

How is that any different from supporting literal nazis? They’re functionally morally equivalent.

gerryflap ,
@gerryflap@feddit.nl avatar

Tankies are definitely also authoritarian, and they also oppose anything western and democratic, but that doesn’t make them Nazi’s. Don’t forget that the Soviet Union also murdered a lot of people out of the name of communism. These two ideologies oppose each other in many ways, even if the end result in both cases is horrible.
