Yep,while other were complaining about issues it was smooth saiking for me.

On the flip side, discovering new communities is a pain, and whenever i subscribe to a new community it can take hours to start populating comments.

Jamie ,
@Jamie@jamie.moe avatar

I already owned the domain and have access to a server with more than enough resources, so it didn’t have a downside to me.

Upside, I don’t really have to worry about anyone else’s federation choices. Undesirable content like loli/shouta stuff doesn’t appear at all, because I’m basically the only user and don’t subscribe to anywhere that exists so it doesn’t federate to me anyway. My instance never lags because nobody but me uses it. Sometimes it misses comments through federation from overloaded instances, but it seems like the newer version of Lemmy has helped that greatly.

mctoasterson , to technology in Windows 10 is EOL in October 2025

Yeah it’s nice to know I have to build a new machine next year whether I want to or not. I’ve been coasting on a desktop PC I built circa 2015 because the thing works still. Problem is it doesn’t meet the hardware reqs (TPM 2.0) to upgrade to Win 11.

Whether I build a machine in 2025 or not I think I will be making the switch to daily driving Linux. I am sick of the amount of time the end user has to spend debloating Windows and blocking its telemetry.

pastermil ,

You can start by putting Linux on that old machine. I’d use Linux Mint to begin with.

Lemonparty ,

So September 2025ish is when I need to decide which Linux distro to go with.

mindlight ,

Why wait with the switch until 2025?

Appoxo ,
@Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Because theres no need to buy new hardware until then and the planned parts might get cheaper or a new deal is offered.

For example my planned motherboard was on sale with a local seller because they opened a new location and offered a 20% discount on Asus parts.

Ransack ,

I think they meant why wait to switch to Linux not the why wait to purchase newer hardware.

mindlight ,

Yup, They did.

intoverflow ,

You can bypass the TPM 2.0 requirements by pulling in your Windows 11 ISO into Rufus and then selecting to remove the TPM requirement in the prompt.
Drawback is when updating to new major releases of win11 (so I’ve heard) that you have to edit the registry.

Just going Linux is way cleaner.

barsquid ,

Are there TPM modules that one can drop in to motherboards to add that? I have TPM module headers, I keep wondering if I can get one to use with LUKS.

I think switching to Linux is the right choice regardless though.

Chev ,

Their hardware requirents don’t make sense at all. I’ve built my new PC last summer with the best AMD tech available and I don’t meet the requirements for some reason.

I suggest slowly switching to cross platform apps so you don’t find out an app you’re using daily won’t work after moving to Linux.

If anyone’s interested in a hard sci-fi show about uploading consciousness they should watch the animated series Pantheon. Not only does the technology feel realistic, but the way it’s created and used by big tech companies is uncomfortably real.

The show got kinda screwed over on advertising and fell to obscurity because of streaming service fuck ups and region locking, and I can’t help but wonder if it’s at least partially because of its harsh criticisms of the tech industry.

If you’re not using tz_database or equivalents for literally all date-time logic, if 24 or 60*60 are constants defined in your project… you’re doing it fucking wrong. I don’t know how many times we need to break out the idiot club, but date, time and timezones are extremely complicated - unless your business is primarily concerned with them you must use a library or service.

Do Not Reinvent This Wheel

jsomae ,

What does tz_database do? Wikipedia makes it seem like it basically converts a pair (geocoordinatr, utc time) to local time

InputZero ,

From my very basic understanding, yeah that’s basically what it does. However it accounts for a whole lot more into adding or subtracting from UTC. Timezones aren’t absolute, they’re political. Timezones have weird rules, and history that needs to be somehow expressed in the code to get the right time. That’s what’s sets tz_database apart from just looking at a map and saying it’s +7 UTC.

jsomae ,

So it updates now and then with new rules, and it keeps historical rules for past dates?

InputZero ,

I think so. Like I said, I have a very basic understanding of it. There are definitely a lot of people who know more about this than I do.

MacNCheezus ,
@MacNCheezus@lemmy.today avatar

That’s a long time ago. Didn’t that happen in the 90s?

Anticorp ,

The 90’s weren’t that long ago to some of us. But yes, in the 80’s and 90’s they rallied hard against music, and in the 90’s and early 2000’s against video games. Something positive did come out of it though. Music albums and video games didn’t have maturity ratings before all of that campaigning from the Christian Coalition. As a parent it’s nice to have a rating flag, so you know to check the content and see if you think it’s appropriate for your children.

MacNCheezus ,
@MacNCheezus@lemmy.today avatar

My brother in Christ, I don’t know what planet you live on, but here on Earth, that was 30 years ago no matter where you live. And to my knowledge, none of the games and/or bands actually got cancelled because of it except on an individual basis (i.e. if you parents forbid you to have them at home). But in that case, we simply went to a friend’s house to play or listen to them there, so I’m not sure that this is really something worth getting all worked up over.

Anticorp ,

1990 was 34 years ago, but 1999 was only 25 years ago. When you get older, 25 years doesn’t seem like that long ago. I’m not sure if you’re implying that I’m getting worked up in your last sentence, but I’m not. I simply stated an observation. As far as the Christian Coalition, yes, they got really worked up.

Tons of albums were banned. 2 Live Crew had almost every one of their albums banned at one point or another. License to Ill by the Beasty Boys was banned. Everything from Too Short was banned. Tons of music was banned either from the radio, the record stores, or both. People went to jail over it. It was a big deal. Thankfully a lot of those bands sued and appealed, and moved the meter for artistic expression considerably, from then forwards.
