What's was your favourite fast food product that unfortunately got retired and never came back?

Here, for a while at McDonald’s there was a 🍔 called “the 1955” and it was the best, big pieces of onion, an special sauce, buns and big piece of beef with bacon (for Europe standards anyways) it disappeared once and came back for an encore only to be removed again and never return.

I was just about to link that video. He does put forward a convincing thesis in fairness to him.

Why not serve fried chicken on Juneteenth? How is it different from serving corned beef on St. Patrick’s day? (old.lemmy.world)

Disclaimer: I am not trolling, I am an autistic person who doesn’t understand so many social nuances. Also I am from New Hampshire (97% white), so I just don’t have any close African-American friends that I am willing to risk asking such a loaded question.

@khannie@lemmy.world avatar

Others have given you solid answers on why the chicken and watermelon thing was really stupid so I’ll try to answer from the Irish perspective on the second part of your question:

You can serve me corned beef and cabbage on St. Patrick’s day as long as you’re not being a dick about it. I’d probably consider it a nice effort actually if I happened to be abroad on the day.

My dad used to love corned beef, cabbage and potatoes with parsley sauce. It’s a grand meal but not my thing.

If you were a unionist who served it to me in a leprechaun outfit I’d be inclined to tell you where to go though.

Edit: I hope this answers your question. It’s a good question and the answer is nuanced so if I can offer you more perspective let me know, I’d be happy to help.

I believe Americans serve it on Paddy’s day and / or is seen as a stereotypically Irish meal over there. I do recall being asked over there if I ate it regularly.

As I said in another comment there my oul boy did actually really like it as a meal but I think it’s more a misunderstanding though it does have some weird historical roots.

The lad in the picture is Ian Paisley. He was a prominent unionist back in the day. (Unionist being someone in favour of maintaining the six counties in Northern Ireland being part of the UK)

From the wiki page:

Ulster Says No was the name and slogan of a unionist mass protest campaign against the provisions of the 1985 Anglo-Irish Agreement which gave the government of the Republic of Ireland an advisory role in the governance of Northern Ireland.

Page here if you want some more reading.

As I recall (and I was young at the time so this may be wrong) it got rolled out for various other stuff.

Catchy slogan in fairness.

I did come across the competitive scene there about 2 years ago. Honestly I found it both fascinating and a bit disheartening. There was I happy with my occasional dad game where I was regularly beating the AI on one of the higher levels. Nope. Apparently still a noob after 25 years.

At 7 years of age I was collecting the grass coming out of my neighbours lawnmower. I was tossing it in the air at my dog who was having great fun jumping into the air catching it.

Cue my neighbour running over my foot with his lawnmower. I didn’t feel much pain as it shredded straight through my runner and skin.

I was rushed to hospital and somehow they saved my toe. It took about five years for me to regain feeling in it.

Edit: oh I missed the word “work”.

Top EU Court Says There’s No Right To Online Anonymity, Because Copyright Is More Important (www.techdirt.com)

The key problem is that copyright infringement by a private individual is regarded by the court as something so serious that it negates the right to privacy. I will leave my post as an acknowledgment of my wine based mistakes.

On the other hand though… It just makes things worse by, like, several orders of magnitude.

Edit; What’s worse is that I read the whole horse article before, set in my mind what a cunt he was for offering something he had an excess of (other than money, obviously), then promptly got outraged that he only offered a house.

TL;DR I think most people are full of goodness.

In this instance that’s definitely the case that it’s shitty behaviour IMO but in general I still hold dear to my view that most people are good and it’s my default position on new people I meet, with some bad vibe exceptions, until proven otherwise.

It’s like the old Mr Rogers quote about looking for the helpers. I see (and try my best to also do and am so lucky to be married to someone the same) so much good in this world.

‘Time is our life’: Volodymyr Zelenskiy on balancing urgency with diplomacy in the war against Russia (www.theguardian.com)

The interview came at perhaps the toughest moment for Ukraine since the early days of the war. Zelenskiy insisted, however, that it was too early to write off the country, and that he remained positive despite all his frustrations. “I’m not in despair at all … I don’t feel like we are on a sinking ship which is going to...

That’s a good read. Nice video in the middle too.

Asked how he wound down at the end of his long days, he said he often listened to classical music – “Domingo, Pavarotti”. Either that or he read books as a way to turn off his brain before going to sleep. “It’s much more better than to drink,” he said, switching again to English.

He’s some man. Churchill might disagree with him on the booze front but I think if a good book is doing it for you then press on, son.

Can’t imagine what it’s like trying to get to sleep while leading a nation that’s being invaded.

Dubya was definitely way smarter than the media portrayed him at the time. He did very well in the debate against Gore.

I read that the whole “fool me once” gaffe was down to him not wanting to be have a sound bite of him saying “shame on me”, copped it mid sentence then tried to cobble his way out of it. Not sure how true or accurate that is but it is at least plausible.

Some newer phones allow you to stop charging at 80% which will essentially extend the life of your battery for as many years as you want it.

Settings->battery->stop charging at 80%

I get a full day out of 80% and I’m nearly always near a charging source so I use it and haven’t found any issues with it.

I am pretty sure this only showed up in Android 14 for me. OnePlus phone.

khannie ,
@khannie@lemmy.world avatar

You’re welcome. :)

I had learned about the “only charging to 80% extending battery longevity significantly” thing a while back and got over 5 years out of my last phone because of it.

I did switch to lineage OS after OnePlus stopped doing updates. Still… Not having to try to time it myself is a really nice feature now.

khannie ,
@khannie@lemmy.world avatar

I fully agree. Like even 90% would reduce the amount of waste significantly without really impacting usability.

I got a reasonably high end phone for my last one (about €500 at the time) and it survived so so well and I only learned about the 80% thing about 2 years into it and still was charging it to full occasionally.

This automatic 80% thing that just came in is great.

khannie ,
@khannie@lemmy.world avatar

Can you tell me a little more about this please?

I haven’t come across a smart switch before as I generally try to minimise the number of smart devices in my home. I presume you have to pair your phone with something. It sounds quite intriguing.

In Ireland they had something called LRP or lead replacement petrol for a good while. Eventually it just fizzled out as people had their old cars converted.

I believe there was an additive you could buy at a parts shop for cars that couldn’t be converted.

A few for me:

  • Death of my father.
  • Getting married. Hitting 20 years in August. Hopefully many more to come.
  • Realising I didn’t enjoy the business course I was on in college, burning the two years already spent and moving to computer science which I loved every minute of.
  • Having kids. They bring me so much joy.
  • Leaving a well paid job that I didn’t really enjoy and starting my own business.
  • Travel. It’s so important to experience different cultures and viewpoints.
  • edit: Finding a sport that I loved. I wasn’t a sporty kid but decided to start trying different things in my 20s.
