Lemminary , to nostupidquestions in Is it just a coincidence that Chromium and Firefox have similar version numbers?

No, it’s a PR move. Why would anyone use Firefox 12.0 when Chrome is so obviously more advanced with a fast release cycle sitting at version 120+?

Diabolo96 , (edited )

Let’s use hash values for versioning. Big numbers go bigger! Joking aside, I totally believe that there are people who would think bigger numbers means more advanced, and it’s depressing.

DarkThoughts ,

I still despise Mozilla for changing the version numbering. It's so fucking stupid. 90% of the "major updates" are just minor shit while the minor updates are just tiny bug & security fixes. But I guess when you plan to not really move the browser forward, then you wouldn't have gotten any real major updates anyway.

My memory is hazy here, but I was under recollection that Microsoft opted not to call it the Xbox 2 because it coincided with the release of the PlayStation 3, and since three is more than two, obviously the PlayStation is better. And as much as I absolutely hate Microsoft, I almost can’t blame them. Remember that a&w lost to McDonald’s because people thought a 1/3 lb hamburger was less than a 1/4 lb hamburger. People are fucking stupid.

Resol ,
@Resol@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah I never seemed to understand the naming scheme for Xbox consoles, because what came after the 360 is… the Xbox One. It’s technically the third one.

And then there’s Nintendo with all their silly home console names. It didn’t get consistent until the Wii and Wii U, and even then, that was thrown out the window immediately after. At least the handhelds were pretty consistent in their naming.

T156 ,

One of the reasons why the 1/3rd pound burger lost to the 1/4 pound burger, was because people saw the 1/4, and thought that the quarter-pound was larger for some inexplicable reason.

I would be very surprised if there wasn’t at least some marketing suggestion focused around “number that looks big is better”.

Firefox 1.0 was in 2004, and it took until March 2011 to get to version 4.0. Then by the end of 2011, they were on version 9.

Buddahriffic ,

Good and bad faith doesn’t refer to anything about religion.

Acting in good faith means you’re not using deception or hypocrisy and your words and arguments reflect your true beliefs and the intent behind your actions. You use words to express what they mean.

Acting in bad faith means you present a false front to deceive others into thinking you are someone you are not. Your words and arguments do not align with what you believe or why you act. You use words to get what you want or confuse those who might otherwise oppose you.

Not that that distinction makes it any easier to recognize good or bad faith in general. Or to convince those who put their faith in bad people that they should re-examine their position. It just doesn’t necessarily refer to any kind of religious experience.

I’m always wary of clicking a YouTube link scared it would poison the feed.

    Newpipe solved this

    Melody ,

While this feed issue is manageable if you Pause Your Watch History and Clear Your Watch History before doing so; it does disable a lot of suggestions.

Unfortunately Google and YouTube do not make these options easy to find and they are quick to nag you about turning them back on; and You Must Refuse This and ignore the errors and whines at every prompt for a while before they leave you alone.

So by it’s very nature NewPipe completely defuses this garbage by simply being a much saner front-end than using the “Native” YouTube apps ever were.

You know I think YouTube might start learning their lesson if more and more people began refusing to use their scummy front-end more than strictly necessary. Unfortunately they’re going to go through the usual stages of grief while doing so and they absolutely are currently trying to attack apps like GrayJay and NewPipe with spurious lawsuits.

So instead; maybe those of you who “Pay” for YouTube Premium should simply cancel your service and start donating that amount to projects like NewPipe, when that is possible. (Yes I know Team NewPipe will not accept donations for legal reasons, but similar projects do exist, like FreeTube or Invidious, that can and do accept donations to cover costs for server hosted things in their developments.)

Even flac is listed as a supported format but if Google starts storing bit perfect flac without compression, they are gonna give way way more than 15 GB before a power user can hit halfway their song limit.

The algorithm issue is why I allways curate my youtube watch history, if I don’t, my recommendations would quickly be messed up after watching videos outside of my normal interests.

    Ilandar ,

I don’t think recommendations being messed up by the algorithm is the real issue with YouTube (or any big tech social media platform). It’s the fact that the algorithm is so good at predicting what you want to watch before you even think about watching it, that you slowly become pushed into an echo-chamber where your entire online space is inhabited only by people who agree with you, issues that you think are relevant, etc. It’s the entire concept of algorithm-based recommendations that is messed up and it’s damaging society.

    stoy ,

Oh most deffinately, I tend to match non political stuff, but I have no idea if/how I am being affected.

The main issue with the algorithm is that it values engagement over everythibg else, so it will allway bring more extreme view points as they have more engagibg videos.

    Ilandar ,

Yes, exactly. Negative emotions have been shown to drive more engagement in users, so the algorithms are designed to highlight conflict and increasingly extreme viewpoints. For younger viewers, the algorithm favours addictive content to ensure they stay glued to the screen.

The color people will tell you that cyan and magenta do not equal red and blue. My university advisor tricked me into taking a 400 level class from the college of art and design on color theory. Really interesting class but an insane amount of work. Very early on the professor told us to throw out any book that identified red, yellow, and blue as the primary colors. It’s red, green, blue for light or cyan, magenta, yellow for pigment.

    rebelsimile ,

Red/yellow/blue are the primary colors for paints (as distinct from dyes/pigments, that’s CMY(k) and as distinct from light, that’s RGB).

    owenfromcanada ,
    @owenfromcanada@lemmy.world avatar

I’m saying that, with respect to color reproduction, paints work exactly the same as dyes and pigments. You can’t make magenta paint from red, blue, and yellow. So the “primary colors” of paint are actually CMY.

    captainlezbian ,

Yeah it’s just historically been very difficult to make magenta and cyan paints so ryb has stood in for cmy

    Sternhammer ,
    @Sternhammer@aussie.zone avatar

Yes, additive colour theory is based on red, green and blue (RGB). These are the colours you see if you look at your TV screen very closely.

Subtractive colour theory uses cyan, magenta and yellow. In printing black, abbreviated ‘K’, is added for contrast—CMYK. These are the inks used to print the dots you see if you look closely at a magazine photo.

I think people are confused by this because they’re taught a bastardised version of subtractive colour theory, using red, blue and yellow, at a very early age.

My job requires me to be a “jack of all trades” (I am a duct taper with a bullshit job in David Graeber parlance). I have to cover myriad technical things. I usually know the high level way to do things, but I frequently need help with the specifics (rusty on the syntax, etc), so I use the free ChatGPT for that kind of thing. it’s been extremely helpful. I was also the first person to bring it to the attention of my boss ages ago when it first came onto the scene.

Rather predictably, my boss now acts like he discovered (borderline invented it) and is always nagging everyone to use it to get their work done faster.

AI has already put some people out of work and will continue to be disruptive. There will be a lot more layoffs coming, is my guess. And it doesn’t really matter if the AI is good or not. If the C-Suite thinks they can save money and get rid of “lazy workers” they will absolutely 100% do it. We’ve seen over and over again how customer service and product quality hardly even matter any more.

I appreciate your take on it: replace the useless middle manager whip-cracker types. Hopefully we see a lot of that…

    aesthelete ,

My company did a big old round of AI layoffs and now it’s barely functional at all because it got rid of a bunch of people actually doing things and kept all of the loud idiots.

    AA5B ,

They should have asked their AI for guidance on layoffs, LoL

I would save my cat every time. I don’t value human life above her life. She’s been there for me for the past 15 years and helped me through the darkest times.

Took me a moment to realize the dark mark on her face wasn’t her hind paw.

She’s a Siamese chocolate point. In Siamese cats, there is a mutation for the genes of an enzyme (Tyrosinase) that inhibits the production of melanin above a certain temperature. Where the body temperature is lower (extremities, airways), that enzyme is deactivated and melanin is produced, allowing the fur to darken.

Siamese kitten are born completely white, as their temperature is kept high everywhere in the womb, and rapidly start to color after birth.

I have two Siamese Balinese cats and I never actually knew the practicalities of their coloring… I knew it was something about temperature but I wasn’t sure if that was a metaphorical “temperature” or actually talking about millimeters of mercury

Their dark spots also expand when they get old and their circulation worsens as well. Older point color cats will tend to darken on their bellies.

This is so interesting! Thanks for the cat fact!

Yeah, my kitties got me through the pan. I lived alone and wasn’t in a relationship and had no car at the time. The isolation was extreme.

    I don’t blame you.

    techt ,

That’s so cute, I can’t. Thanks for paying your taxes on time.
