I skimmed a bit of the article but my mental processes aren’t feeling flexible enough for quantum nonsense this morning… Are they saying it’s possible to make an observation window into the box of Schrodinger’s cat that allows for observation from an arbitrary distance without speed of light delay?

US Lemmys what could Biden do in the next 6 months to EARN your vote? (other than just not being Trump)

Sorry this is kinda political. Is there an asklemmypolitics group this would be better for? I’m hoping not to get into the libs vs progressives political debate we see everywhere on here… Just want to know what people are actually looking for.

Few of the shitty things Trump was doing have actually stopped under Biden.

Kids in cages?

  • Was allegedly happening even before Trump and it’s still happening now

Reproductive Rights?

  • federally gone and state-by-state dissolution continues

Student loan debt?

  • hah

Trans rights?

  • sooo many states are making great progress in their initiation of a genocide against trans people

Edit to add: A point in Biden’s favor was the Inflation Reduction Act which included some teeth to chase tax-dodging billionaires but Biden’s boner for genocide convinced him to remove all those to pass an “aid” package for Israel

You seem to quite fundamentally, or perhaps simply maliciously, misunderstand your sister? Or maybe I misunderstand you?

  1. My cat
  2. The stranger? Maybe
  3. Because I know how worthless a human being my “worst enemy” is and I could justify the loss of a great many good things if they were removed from existence. If the only “loss” of removing my worst enemy is getting to keep my cat, then obviously, I’ll do his family a service and take this monkey’s paw.

Nevermind, this isn’t up-to-date but…

By Nate Schweber and Matthew Haag April 19, 2024, 1:54 p.m. ET A young man set himself on fire on Friday afternoon near the Lower Manhattan courthouse where jury selection continued in the criminal trial of former President Donald J. Trump.

The man doused himself with a liquid around 1:35 p.m. in Collect Pond Park, across the street from the courthouse. Onlookers screamed as bright orange flames engulfed the man. It was unclear what motivated his action.

People rushed over to try to extinguish the fire, but the intensity of the heat could be felt several hundred feet away.

After a few minutes, dozens of police officers rushed over and tried to smother the flames. The man, who appeared to be alive, was loaded into an ambulance and rushed away.

The man was in an area of the park that was cordoned off for supporters of Mr. Trump.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

Google is so useless these days. It’s very common that my searches get actually zero results now. Like, what the fuck happened? Google used to identify its quality by how many hundreds of pages of (admittedly mostly useless) results it could return for each search. Now, when I do get results, it’s about a 3 to 4 ratio of useless ads to actual content.

I have the Google rewards app that occasionally asks me questions about where I’ve been / what I’ve bought for which it will pay me a few nickels each. The other day it asked me questions about my use of ChatGPT and the relative trust I had for the answers given by the language model to my trust of the results from a Google search. The last question was an essay question asking me why I thought ChatGPT was better for the specific application I was using it for. Google paid me a whole goddamn dollar for telling it, in many colorful words, that I understood the tool I needed for my question wasn’t an ad generator so obviously I didn’t use Google.

Hey look, feature 8 of Umberto Eco’s Ur Fascism!

… Thus, by a continuous shifting of rhetorical focus, the enemies are at the same time too strong and too weak. …

Eco does make a point of clarifying that the presence of absence of any single trait he has identified does not prove a thing is or isn’t fascist.

But in spite of this fuzziness, I think it is possible to outline a list of features that are typical of what I would like to call Ur-Fascism, or Eternal Fascism. These features cannot be organized into a system; many of them contradict each other, and are also typical of other kinds of despotism or fanaticism. But it is enough that one of them be present to allow fascism to coagulate around it.

(The full text of the feature I quoted above)

  1. The followers must feel humiliated by the ostentatious wealth and force of their enemies. When I was a boy I was taught to think of Englishmen as the five-meal people. They ate more frequently than the poor but sober Italians. Jews are rich and help each other through a secret web of mutual assistance. However, the followers must be convinced that they can overwhelm the enemies. Thus, by a continuous shifting of rhetorical focus, the enemies are at the same time too strong and too weak. Fascist governments are condemned to lose wars because they are constitutionally incapable of objectively evaluating the force of the enemy.
ForgetPrimacy ,

It’s pretty fantastic. In 2020 (only just beginning my journey of recovery from a conservative upbringing), I decided I should understand what fascism actually was. I found that dictionary definitions were terribly imprecise but eventually found Eco’s essay. I understand there are other methods–of similar scholarly integrity–used to define fascism, but I have not spent the effort to find and compare these other works. It is my (uninterrogated assumption) vague understanding that Eco’s definition isn’t regarded as opinionated.

I remember reading a statement from Lewinsky regarding that allegation. Something along the lines of her agreeing that, while she had for many years defended him and declared to anyone asking that their involvement was purely consensual, she didn’t really have the power to consent. I believe it was referenced how the enlightenment of the recent Me Too revelations had influenced her evolving understanding.

I get the same math… Seems fucky but… This is assuming the sum of centripetal acceleration and gravity at the peak of the loop is zero. It may be physically possible for a cat to learn to manage a loop with such velocity but I imagine a cat wouldn’t be able to maintain a stride through a zero-g portion of the loop the first time it tried it.

So, instead let’s throw an assumption that the cat must maintain at minimum sum of -1g at the maxima of the loop. That may be badly phrased, assuming the cat must have at minimum a net force of at least one g between it’s paws and the surface of the loop it was currently using to accelerate…

3.5 meters = 11.5 feet

Radius, so still a freaking 7 meter diameter loop feels incredible…

Fountain soda costs a few pennies per gallon, the lost earnings of which would ordinarily be counted as small beans compared to the wages saved by reducing the bodies you need to pay to run your restaurant. The pandemic taught companies though that you don’t need a body for every job, you need only as many as it takes to keep the door unlocked. The single person whipped and frantic doing the jobs of eight people will just have to work harder and maybe next year they’ll get a fifteen cent raise

Survivor of a TBI checking in.

I thought about this a bit actually in my earlyish recovery, though I never did confirm my thoughts with any doctors who might know more about the mechanics I was interpreting me perceptions of.

In summary, I don’t think it would help (for those with injuries exactly identical to mine*). The problem as I constructed it in my mind, was;

  1. A problem with my ability to interpret balance from my senses.
  • I could still sense all the things I could pre-injury, but the signals would travel down the wires of my body with different kinds of “noise” than my brain had learned to adapt to for the first 20+ years of my life.
  1. A problem with my ability to control the fine-motor aspects of all my balance-affecting body parts.
  • The relative position and momentum of every moving and not-moving part of your body contribute to your overall “state” of balance. Now my control to each part of my body had (similar to the sensing syste’s “wires”) different levels of noise to adapt for than it has taught itself to deal with so far.

I think a system like the Exoskeleton referred to here would probably fix or at least greatly reduce the second problem, but the first problem would require, at the very least, a “processor” that could replace the thing that determines my balance from all my various senses (my brain, at least one part of it).

NORTH TEXAS (CBSNewsTexas.com) — Ken Paxton’s impeachment trial hasn’t started yet, but there is already political fallout. Not just for the attorney general, but for other Republican leaders and lawmakers as well.

When House members first heard details of the 20 articles of impeachment against Attorney General Paxton, Republican Texas Rep. Charlie Geren of Fort Worth dropped a bombshell:

“I would like to point out that several members of this House while on the floor of the House doing state business, received telephone calls from General Paxton personally threatening them with political consequences in their next election.”

The point on pelvic tilt is especially fascinating to me!

I am a cis male who’s been getting a lot more into latin styles of partner dancing these past years, a focus of the level I’ve been getting into lately is body-movement generally but including hip position / pelvic tilt. As I’ve gained more awareness of my own body in everyday life I’ve come to assume that fem people must have a “more tilted” pelvis when in a neutral position because of non-specific societal pressures.

If I’m understanding your statement correctly though, the neutral angle of one’s pelvis has a strong correlation with the hormone balance or, perhaps more directly, the muscle/fat distribution around their body. Is that right?

Fuck this is so cool, fascinating!

You’re absolutely right, every citizen who ever makes any decision that makes another unsafe should be immediately executed. All of these are absolutely damning sins. You are such a righteous and bright light of brilliant justice.

Capitalism in its end state would prevent the creation of small businesses.
