Well for starters, just having the wedding in the backyard implies they’re being cheap about it (nothing wrong with that). So you cant blame the guests when they try to be cheap about it too.

Australia is pretty strict about electrical stuff, and only qualified electricians can perform electrical work, including work on any electrical fixtures. Light bulbs were counted as a fixture, until the law was amended in 1998 to specifically exclude light bulbs.
Australia is still a lot stricter than the USA in terms of electrical work you can do to your own house. It’s still illegal to replace a light switch or outlet if you’re not a qualified electrician.
In Chicagoland there are places where you can’t even plug something into an outlet because of Unions. I’m all for Unions, but some (especially the police) of them are basically shadow governments with their own special rules.

Not really. I’ve switched from wired to wireless because of the number of headphones I’ve destroyed getting the cable stuck so bad it yanks my body. My ears never hurt from it; just slightly disoriented and audio only working for one bud/side now. Eventually it was too annoying and I switched to full bluetooth wireless. I won’t argue against cables being better for audio, but for me they arent.
