The migration is still in process. DB had to be restored a second time, and the admin says there is still stuff that needs doing.

The words “Ukraine” and “nuked” should probably be used with special care at this particular moment in history.

DarkThoughts OP ,

It's on the nose but I don't think it should be causing too much confusion within a community that's about the fediverse.

eskimofry ,

Yeah I almost did a double take

PhlubbaDubba ,

Don’t worry, if Kyiv’s getting nuked, so are all the rest of us, so you’d have found out long before you had time to read about it! :D

More seriously, someone’s really gotta figure out how to attack the nuclear arms specifically. Putin is making it obvious that the world will never be safe if there’s even the remotest chance some lunatic could gain the ability to fire those things.

It would have to be the fastest military operation ever conducted in human history, but if it worked, it would save the world.

DarkThoughts OP ,

The moment Russia uses nukes in Ukraine is the moment they get completely fucked by NATO. It's been pretty clear that nuclear weapons are the reddest of red lines.

And in case of a Russian collapse I guess we'd need some form of UN intervention to secure certain nuclear sites. Really depends on how bad things would go there in such an event though.

PhlubbaDubba ,

I refuse to believe that there isn’t a secret containment plan that all nuclear powers are coerced into agreeing to that basically gives every other nuclear power the right to intervene and secure the nukes from paramilitaries and terrorists in the event of state collapse.

The only reason I would presume NK isn’t in on it is because everyone’s agreed by now that if they fall it’s gonna be a race between China and South Korea for who can press a legitimate claim first.

CrypticCoffee ,

If Russia use them and NATO respond with nukes or anything that will cause major problems, they’ll send their nukes to the West (Europe, US), and the West will send them back. These will be done under orders if they do not hear anything, and very little action will be quick enough to prevent it.

Mutually assured destruction. The question would be who would survive? NZ? South America? Africa? Asia?

I’m fucked personally as I’m in the UK.

I would rather we didn’t masturbate over nuclear weapons because what happened to Japan would be nothing compared to the loss of life on a global scale. It is a good option for nobody.

Lost_My_Mind ,

Don’t worry, if Kyiv’s getting nuked, so are all the rest of us, so you’d have found out long before you had time to read about it! :D

Actually, I don’t think they’d ever find out about it. One second they would exist, and then suddenly, not so much. Obviously no one has any way to prove this, but the going expectation is that if you get nuked, you don’t even feel pain. It happens so fast, you just cease to be an alive person anymore, and instead become a pile of ash. You essentially go from healthy living human, to creamation where you stand, in an instant.

Obviously nobody who’s ever been vaporized like that can comment after the fact if they felt pain, or were aware of anything. What we do know is there have been recovered scenes after the Japanese nuked cities where you see a shadow in the shape of a person. That’s where that person was, and their body cast enough of a shadow in that moment of bright intense light, that it prevented the ground from being cooked by the blast. Unfortunately, nobody was giving the middle finger to something unrelated when the blast happened. As dark as the situation was, if it had to happen, it would have been kinda neat if the shadows were doing something interesting by pure chance.

But yeah, they wouldn’t have had time to even know they’d been bombed.

PhlubbaDubba ,

I guess pursuing the question much further is necessarily going to take us to the big one, “what happens after we die?”

And there’s only so many times I can deliver the punch line “lots of things that just don’t involve us anymore.” before I start to feel like a “that guy” about it.

Lost_My_Mind ,

I’ve always had an alternative take on the “afterlife”. Some people like to think of spirits as this tangible thing, like a ghost, or something that is self aware. I see it more like how someone would say “The spirit of the city comes alive at these events!”. So in that case, the city has a spirit. It’s not a ghost, but that’s more along the lines of how I interpret the spirit. My grandma died in October. Her spirit lives on with me until the day I die. I will continue spreading stories of the things she’s taught to me. In that way, she will continue to inspire people who she’s never even met. So in that way her spirit lives on.

So now that you get the idea of what I mean by spirit, here is what I think happens to us when we die. In the short term, you cease to exist. You don’t experience anything more. You don’t look down upon people from the heavens. You don’t roam the earth observing life. You just…don’t exist anymore. In the long term your spirit lives on. Each persons spirit will continue a different length of time. I’m sure there was probably a guy named Tom who lived in what is now Boston, back in the 1600s. I have no idea about who or what Tom did, because everything he ever did has been forgoten. Toms spirit has died. Others have their spirit live on for much longer. George Washingtons spirit lives on as long as America lives on. There may or may not have been a guy named Jesus. If he did exist, he’s got to hold the record for longest living spirit. I can’t think of anybody elses spirit from 2000+ years ago we still think about today.

The point is, while you’re alive you have the chance to make an impact on as many or as few people as you can. Physically everybody is going to experience death differently. Ironically, people who are executed through lethal injection have the easiest death I can think of. Pain free. The rest of us are going to experience something much more horrible. Some die in their sleep peacefully.

But after you’re gone, your spirit is all that remains. How long it remains depends on who you inspired, and what concepts you gave birth to for societies benefit.

PhlubbaDubba ,

My take is that the afterlife comes in three phases, yes phases because as much as it gives the fundies a hard-on there’s literally nothing humanly possible to do that could justify a permanent state of the worst torment imagineable.

Phase 1, atonement, you do the hard work for the souls you’ve harmed in your life to forgive you and release the chains that bind your soul.

Phase 2, forgiveness, you do the harder work of forgiving what wrongs have been done to you. Those chains hold you to your material existence, and you have to let go of them to be ready to move on.

Phase 3, reunion, the veil behind which no eyes may see. All you’ll know is that by now anyone you haven’t met yet from your life has done the soul rending work you have and walked beyond it. They’re on the other side, and they’re waiting for you to join them, what that’ll look like, probably some 4-D amalgamation of every heaven or paradise or state of eternal bliss ever foretold by human words, and yet also none of those things, because not only do we not understand it, doing the hard work of being forgiven and doing all the forgiving is what it takes for you to be ready to understand it. I think it is what specifically god spoke of when they said they are both and yet neither of human binaries, and incomprehensible in their true essence to the human mind.

Leate_Wonceslace ,
@Leate_Wonceslace@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

There’s a way to prove it; we know how quickly pain signals propagate through our nerves and how quickly nukes disintegrate matter. The degree of skepticism you’d need to be uncertain about it would cause you to need to resolve solipsism before you allowed nukes to even exist. There’s a certain radius within which, if you don’t have sufficient shielding there’s no possibility of pain. There’s another smaller radius for which no amount of shielding will change the outcome.

uis ,

Putin is making it obvious that the world will never be safe if there’s even the remotest chance some lunatic could gain the ability to fire those things.

There needs to be more than one lunatic to follow those orders

Usually the news only concern the instance’s users. If you want to find announcements, the community is often named either meta or main.

But maybe a common place for instance status announcements isn’t such a bad idea.

Like !fediverse?

Blaze ,
@Blaze@reddthat.com avatar

Might cause some spam after every new version, not sure how that community would accept it.

There are more than 20 instances than have more than 300 monthly active users (fedidb.org/software/lemmy/), if all of them announce their updates there, that could be quite a lot.

I would suggest people who are really invested in a community to follow that community’s instance meta/main community

Blaze ,
@Blaze@reddthat.com avatar

Where do you expect them to announce this kind of news, in all of their communities?

DarkThoughts OP ,

I don't know but it clearly lacks the reach. Maybe at least have an easy to see link to the news communities within the sidebars, but that's more something for the actual software to do I think.

GiveMemes ,

I’m terrible at keeping track of things normally but I never lose my wallet or headphones. Seems like maybe a you problem.

CluelessDude ,

Not a fan of singular earbuds but because my phone didn’t come with a jack I got ones that are basically attached to each other, so they are wireless but attached by a wired between them with a little battery that lasts 10h I’ve grown really fond of them.

No problem of losing them either!

lud ,

I really like my semi wireless headphones as well. They have like 28 hours of battery life and you can charge them from 0% to 10 hours of playback (or however many percent that is) in 10 minutes. They also have an incredible feature I wish all wireless headphones had. The ability to quickly switch between the last two devices by just pressing a button twice. No need to disconnect them from the device they are already connected too.

remind me, was the S10 the last Samsung phone that didn’t explode or literally fall apart in your hands?

edit: fuck all the downvoters. i have an s20fe. it literally cannot handle hot weather, and the fucking glue gives in, completely removing the back cover. how about some notches and shit? really we can’t make any mechanism for the covers, we’re just gluing things now? is this a Tesla phone?

Bytemeister ,

No. That’s (almost) all Samsung devices. They make decent screens and camera sensors though…

kingshrubb , to lemmyshitpost in Galaxy S10 til the wheels come off

Still have this phone but it is getting a bit ragged, really just the battery. Might upgrade to Sony Xperia 1 V or 1 VI soon. Need the headphone jack and microSD slot.

NooBoY ,

Check out HMD phones. They have the SD slot and the 3.5mm jack as well. They also have partnered with iFixit so that you can replace parts as well.

www.hmd.com

fiercekitten ,

Looking at the specs of this HMD phone, I would not recommend it. The headphone jack and SD card slot are about all this phone has going for it. It’s underpowered, especially for a phone running Android 14. I guess it wouldn’t be too bad for people who just need the cheapest Android phone they can get.

…There also appears to be a hole in the screen 🙃 (i loathe camera holes and screen “notches”).

Unless you are in India.
Their customer service apparently drove a relative of mine to Apple.

Also some of the cheaper Nokia ones have a great number of problems:

  • SIM card not detected after Restart
  • Some bad sensor causing Google Maps to show you facing the wrong direction.
Alright, it’s just 2, but happens enough to make me regret.

Some high end model had its LCD liquidate somehow, without a visible crack and was not covered in warranty.

Bytemeister ,

Left the market a few years ago. Sorry bud. I wanted to get the Wing, but grabbed a OnePlus 9 Pro instead. No regrets.

gamermanh , to lemmyshitpost in Galaxy S10 til the wheels come off

So many people go boomer argument mode over this because they don’t like change, but their anger is clearly misplaced. The 3.5mm is not the king of audio connectors and never was, it’s death could very easily have been a good thing.

Why the fuck didn’t headphone makers start offering USB-C devices once phones pulled this move? My PC mobo from 2017 has a C port that could be used for this, I’m certain computers could have easily adapted (and they’re the way smaller market anyway). Is it just because apple had to be special with their lightning bullshit? If so, they’d better start it up now!

Instead of being able to buy new cans with the wire that my phone uses I have to snag an adapter. Not a BIG deal but this change is over 5 fucking years old, we should have these devices as the norm now to avoid all of the fucking issues we’re currently looking at

fatalError ,

Usb is a carrying digital signals for the most part while headphonea are analog. So you have 2 options:

  1. Implement some janky non-standard analog audio in some usb alternate mode that will only work with some devices
  2. Add a digital to analog converter in the plug itself, which is more complex and expensive

Both options prevent you from chanrging while using headphones unless you use a splitter or wireless charging which is not ideal

3.5 mm may not be the king, but it’s extremly simple and fairly robust and has little to no disatvantages except for wireless headphones sales ofc. You don’t have to charge these heqdphones, you don’t have to worry about losing one of them.

Wireless headphonwa have their uses, I doubt they benefit the majority of people tho.

gardylou ,

Not about being “the king” just about simplicity and sufficiency.

I want ubiqituous immediate connection…we aren’t all maximizers, some of us just want the easiest serviceable & reliable option.

lud ,

Maybe, but than I want two USB-C ports.
