Mac OS was running on RISC processors back in the 90s, and Steve Jobs used them in his NeXT computers which used a variation of BSD, which was the basis for OS X which could run on PowerPC.

Apple’s had a ton of experience with RISC so it makes sense they’d do it well.

Marijuana and hallucinogen use, binge drinking reached record highs in middle-aged adults, survey finds (www.cnn.com)

Last year, more middle-aged adults were binge drinking, using marijuana or consuming hallucinogens than ever before, according to a new report. Cannabis use surged among young adults under 30, alongside historic rates of vaping, as well.

Yep. All it will take is one oil shock and we'll have GM and Ford scrambling to build small cars, fail miserably, get bailed out, and then start building giant cars again.

Bigger vehicles are less likely to feel the bumps in the shitty roads we have because everybody drives big vehicles that wear down the roads 10x as fast.

Since everybody gets to vote we should make sure everyone's competent to vote by educating them.

At least that was part of the reasoning behind free public education.

Insured healthcare isn't expensive.

Yes it is. I have "good" insurance and it still cost me $3,000 for a few stitches, a CAT scan, and a night in the hospital when I slipped and hit my head. That's on top of the almost $600 a month I'm paying, and the $1200 a month my employer is paying.

Ah, yes, just remove the natural human craving for fats and sugars. Simple as.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

I agree that highly refined foods are designed to make you eat more of them. What I don't agree with is that we fix it by removing our craving for them, rather than restricting them at the source.

One thing that would help a lot is limiting food advertising. The more you eat these superfoods the more you're conditioned to want them, and seeing pictures and video of them prompt increased consumption like Pavlov ringing a bell.

Digital content is so easy to lose or destroy I don’t think it will be used for thousands of years. I’ve got a floppy from 1996 and I have no way of reading it and would probably corrupt the data if I tried.

If someone made a GUI to handle kernel modules and people could point and click through them, would that be okay?

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

You said people wanted to point and click. I agree: I’ve seen many Windows admins VNC to a desktop environment to get to a shell rather than use SSH

So if everything in Linux was accessible from a GUI, would that make it better? Because Windows does similar things, and so does Mac OS. They just use pretty pictures instead of words.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

Things on Windows and Mac rarely just work, especially when you're talking about kernel extensions. In fact, one of the first things you do when troubleshooting a Mac is to start up without extensions by holding the shift key.

And this is almost entirely the fault of the hardware manufacturers. They could write drivers for Linux that would work as well as their drivers for Windows. They don't do it, so amateurs have to reverse engineer the hardware and try their best to get it to work.

If, like with Mac and Windows, hardware manufacturers offered actual support for Linux you would not see these issues. The problem isn't with Linux, it's with the hardware makers.

I will agree that smartphones have made people know less about how computers actually work while increasing usage. And this is because they've obfuscated things to the point where they "simply work" with "minimal effort." Maybe we should stop doing that.

Carter had a hugely ambitious plan to build solar power satellites to wean us off both of them. He didn't like nukes and he was a nuclear physicist.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

Except he was in a position to push nuclear instead of a cockamamie scheme where you need to launch hundreds of rockets that are 10x the size of the Saturn V over the course of years to build solar farms the size of Manhattan.

A man who once had radioactive piss from a nuclear accident chose that over nukes.

I find it just addictive enough. There are definitely lulls in activity, but they're short-lived and I have things I should be doing besides shitposting so it's actually helped me.

The quality, however, is much higher. This can be very subjective, but I do have some real world evidence. The number of times I'd show someone a meme and have them say "Please send that to me" has definitely gone up since I switched to the fediverse.

Question for software developers: how do you organize your To Do list at work?

I’m asking because I’m wondering if there’s a more efficient way for me to handle my notes at work. Currently I just use a txt file in Notepad++. I use this file to track all of the stuff I have to do, such as tasks for stories I’m working on, next steps for projects, discussions I need to follow up on, questions and...

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

I supplement team-based task management with post it notes on my monitor for the things I'm working on short term. Usually the Jira ticket number or a couple words about what needs done is enough, and putting it where I can't not see it keeps them from falling through the cracks.

Plus it's fun when my boss gives me something and I can show him the post it I made

I paid for annual subscriptions for a couple streaming services, and get some when I buy other things from companies, but I still pirate the shows on those services and put them in Plex because everything is in one place
