Makes me wonder why they didn’t start with beyond meat sausage. The seasoning would cover any difference in flavor and the texture would be a lot easier to disguise

Why are there so many expensive homes?

I see a lot of expensive houses being built in my area. A LOT. And the weird thing is that they’re being bought pretty quickly. Are these people just making more money than me? If so, what are they doing for a living? Or are they just living house poor? How exactly are they affording these places?...

@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

The profit margin per square foot on a large "luxury" housing unit is a lot higher than on a smaller, cheaper unit. Plus you won't get people upset that you're eroding the price of their homes by building cheaper ones, so NIMBYs won't stop you.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

It’s pretty simple: The cost to make the structure of a house is pretty much the same for luxury or basic models: Framing, electrical, foundation, etc.

But if you throw in some cheap granite countertops, a fancy tub, and up-market flooring suddenly it’s a luxury house and you can charge twice as much, despite it not costing nearly twice as much to build.

Same thing goes for cars: A luxury car just has different fabric and some badges, but they charge way more than a comparable econobox because it’s “luxury.”

Microsoft now has implemented "compare with Bing chat" button when you visit Google Bard in Edge (reddthat.com)

When you visit the Google’s chatbot bard’s website in Microsoft Bing. A New Button pops up besides the search bar which lets you compare bard results with Bing chat’s. I have no idea why they implemented this, well maybe to show off the their chatbot is better than bard or something?

FiOS has been my favorite ISP because it’s just a hole in the wall the internet comes out of, and I can use my own hardware and they don’t seem to care if I run a server.

The bar is pretty low but at least they hit it.

Now that we have an idea of how much ocean cloud cover can produce a certain amount of global cooling we can find other, better ways of doing it in a controlled manner.

Much of eastern North America is having a relatively cool summer thanks to the smoke from the Canadian wildfires. Temps in my area have barely broken 85F/30C all summer

I still have hope in my little Posadist heart that the drastic addition of CO2 to our atmosphere, detectable at interstellar distances, will lead us to first contact with an advanced socialist species.

And my little conspiracy theorist heart believes that's why they've kept UAPs hidden for decades.

My parents had a porn blocker, and all it made me do was learn enough about computers to circumvent it. Even if they put age verification in front of every porn site in the world there's still torrents and chat rooms and forums all over where you can find it, and kids will find it. Next thing they'll mandate is putting toothpaste back in the tube.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

It's not that. It's that if you tell a horny teenager that there's pictures of naked people somewhere they'll move heaven and earth to get to it.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

Porn sites have had "Confirm you are over 18" since the dial up days. That's about as much of a safety net as I think is necessary or practicable.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

Yep. Who among us as idiot teenagers hasn't downloaded "$current_starlet full nude sex tape.exe" from some shady site?

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

I totally agree and I put in a good faith effort to block that stuff from my kids' devices using a pihole and what's available on their phones. But I remember being their age and getting away with things because I figured out the workarounds.

At the very least it'll teach them a little about networking and computers which will serve them well in their careers.

I'd build some kind of suction device to put negative air pressure on the tube while holding the nozzle in the toothpaste

The TV streaming apps broke their promises, and now they’re jacking up prices (arstechnica.com)

The end goal of a corporation is to maximize profits for the shareholders within the confines of the law.

And if the fine is greater than the profit, or they don't get caught, that's okay too.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod , (edited )
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

Here's how that will go:

Each streaming service will release their own aggregator app. Each of these will have a fee associated with them. Each of these will have certain services they don't work with because the lawyers are still fighting over things. Each of these will eventually reduce their search coverage and promote their own content. "You searched for Star Trek, would you like Star Wars instead?"

Even if an open source third party wrote something that did this, companies would change their API pricing or authentication to break it so people don't leave their walled gardens.

Companies are incapable of making a service that doesn't eventually enshittify.

I bought a mini pc with four Ethernet ports and turned that into a router

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

I did mine by just adding some iptables rules to set up NAT. It's all of four commands:

echo "net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1" >> /etc/sysctl.conf

iptables –t nat -s 192.168.0.0/16 –A POSTROUTING –o $wan0 -j MASQUERADE

iptables –A FORWARD –i $wan0 –o $lan0 –m state --state RELATED, ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT

iptables –A FORWARD –i $lan0 –o $wan0 –j ACCEPT

Just set $lan0 and $wan0 to your LAN and WAN interfaces. For wifi I've got a couple Unifi access points around the house for good coverage.

Yes, I know IPv6 is better and yadda yadda yadda but I can't remember the addresses let alone type them so I'm not changing anything.

I've got almost all of my services running on a separate, bigger system and only have a couple ports open on this one. Iptables isn't too hard once you understand the shorthand.

The only docker containers I run on my router are a simple search proxy and an Infrared instance that routes Minecraft server connections to another box on my LAN. But IIRC that took a bunch of fiddling

If they had some more time they could have pivoted to supporting hybrid work for companies that have a geographically distributed work force. As much as I love working from home, there are some times when it's better to be in person, and WeWork could let people work hybrid without having to move across the country.

If you want something that's more like Slack you should check out Mattermost. It's got a few other features like a Notion-like project management and a checklist feature. But like Matrix/Element it's open source and can be self hosted if you don't want to use their cloud product.
