Impossible Whoppers are vegan (if you don't add cheese) and do not taste like grass clippings

What is your machine naming scheme?

I’ve ended up with a number of machines on my network, and a need to name them all in a somewhat logical way. For several years I had them named after the planets, which worked well until the PCs for myself, my girlfriend, servers and Raspberry Pi’s quickly summed up to more than the eight planets. I’ve broadened it...

Mastodon or Lemmy

So I’ve been starting to look further into the Fediverse and using it a lot more than any other part of the internet at this point. I wanna know the reasons why people might prefer Lemmy or Mastodon, I have both but seem to lean towards Lemmy for some reason, but not sure why maybe it’s the simple design and you can find...

As someone who's started a couple businesses, the separate taxes and bank accounts weren't that bad. The biggest barrier to entry is your first point, which is wealth accumulation. The ultra wealthy have cornered so many markets it's virtually impossible to get a start in most industries.

Why do you think the most senior people, the ones who carved business logic out of raw Perl with their bare hands and a text editor, have beards?

This was common advice for parents in the 80s and 90s. If someone had to pick me up from school unexpectedly my parents gave them a code word to tell me to let me know it wasn't a child abduction

I'd like to see on Google Maps how far The Empire of The Proclaimers truly is when it's put on roads.

A clear victory for the free fediverse: Meta now says integrating with ActivityPub is "a long way out" (privacy.thenexus.today)

When Meta launched their new Twitter competitor Threads on July 5, they said that it would be compatible with the ActivityPub protocol, Mastodon, and all the other decentralized social networks in the fediverse "soon"....

I reminded of the end of season 1 of Foundation, where the Foundation stayed hidden from the empire for a long time, growing in strength and technology.

Season 2 is pretty good so far

The difference is that Oppenheimer was ostensibly in a race against a fascist regime to get the bomb, with the fate of the free world hanging in the balance.

How safe is open source software? What are the general benefits?

So with open source software more on my mind lately I was wondering - while I get the benefits of transparency and such, how safe is it? If the source code is available to all, isn’t it easier to breach for people (like the recent cookies hack)? If I’d have an open source password manager, would it be easier for people to...

For a single game it's Factorio. Steam has me at around 1600 hours.

For a series it's gotta be Civilization. I've been playing since I was in fifth grade. I'd go over to my friend's house when he wasn't home to play Civ I. I'd spend entire weekends in college playing Civ II and III. I had to have my GF hide my Civ V disk so I wouldn't miss deadlines. And now I'm on a full playthrough of all the new civs in the latest DLC.

That's a bold choice.

Similar thing happened the first time I played paintball. If I held the gun at a certain angle it would fire blanks. I won a game of capture the flag before people caught on.

Considering the stranglehold that huge platforms have on users, it makes a lot of sense for organizations to have their own fediverse servers, with communities and access they control.

For example, a lot of governments use Twitter as a way to communicate in disaster situations. But since Elon lets anyone with a credit card have a check mark and bans people on a whim you can't trust that the account is a real one or that it won't be cut off in time of need. A Mastodon server would solve both of these problems.
