People not ordering food en masse would hurt small businesses the most. Plus there's a huge benefit to using an app to order food, which is why they're so popular. If the system were controlled by the restaurants and interoperable via an open API, we'd at least see some transparency.

The problem is exactly what OP stated: These things are owned by a small number of players, who can exercises control of the market from all sides. They've created a chokepoint where they can extract rents without needing to provide value in return.

Silicon Valley elites revealed as buyers of $800m of land to build utopian city (www.theguardian.com)

After weeks of local speculation, the purchasers of 55,000 acres of northern California land have been revealed. The group Flannery Associates – backed by a cohort of Silicon Valley investors – has quietly purchased $800m worth of agricultural and empty land, the New York Times has reported. Their goal is to build a utopian...

Zoom CEO says Zoom meetings hinder innovation and debate, wants employees back in the office (www.zdnet.com)

Exactly. Increasing pay would be really, really nice. But we can do that and have more control over our workplaces. Worker owned companies would prevent huge disparities in pay from reoccurring, regardless of what the government does.

There's value in creating and maintaining a community for something you love. I imagine it's a bit like gardening: Pulling weeds and hauling mulch isn't fun, but when you take a step back you've created something nice.

Or something. I'm shit at gardening and never wanted to be a mod, probably for the same reason. And it would be far, far better to have your garden not be harvested by a megacorporation who can kick you off at any minute, but that's why I use the fediverse.

If you drop the spending whatever you want, a few million should be sufficient. If you get a 5% annual return that's $50,000 a year per million invested. $150-200k a year if you own your house is more than enough to not worry about having enough money. Plus there's millions in the bank for any truly major expense.

In the mid to late 1960s economists were predicting 20 hour work weeks and month-long vacations. So it was perfectly reasonable for Gene to imagine a future where nobody had to work.

A mortgage is an investment, let it roll for as long as you can.

The fact that you're not wrong about this is part of the reason housing keeps getting more expensive. So many individuals have their nest eggs tied up in their houses that building more would hurt a lot of ordinary folks.

I wonder if the use of CGI is part of why this is the case. I love it, don't get me wrong, but when a rescue mission to an asteroid takes months of VFX work because they're swooping through swirling clouds of gas it can make episodes take longer. Heck, even the views out of the windows on SNW are masterpieces instead of christmas lights in front of a black curtain.

With older shows they had the sets and costumes built, so filming a walk-and-talk or courtroom episode wasn't as big of a technical lift. Then there was the desire of just about every show to reach 100 episodes, which meant they could get that sweet, sweet syndication money.
