Yeah but 14th Gen Intel CPUs are still failing regardless of your OS.

Streaming sites? My brother in Christ, you need to ditch those unreliable websites that hardly work and go down all the time, and get a proper media center setup. Here are some terms to look up to get you started:

  • Stremio
  • Stremio addons: Torrentio, Streaming Catalogs, Trakt.tv
  • Real-Debrid

That’s the basic setup you’ll want for a proper good time. Instantly stream any show or movie from any provider for free (Netflix, Disney, Prime Video, HBO, Apple TV, etc.). Get recommendations based on your viewing habits. Compatible with all your devices, including smart TVs. Torrent-based so it won’t get taken offline (at least not anytime soon). Torrents are already stored on a server so there’s no waiting on seeds (which is what Real-Debrid does. Optional and $3/mo but it makes the experience much smoother, especially if you want to watch something older/more obscure. And it eliminates the need for a VPN. Plus it works for any torrent, not just media).

Trust me, this is the way to go. Once you get everything set up, it’s so easy and straightforward to use that my grandmother could navigate Stremio and not even know that it’s a pirate service. Good luck and happy sailing. 🏴‍☠️

Thankfully this isn’t reddit.

One thing I* won’t miss about that place is seeing the same damn jokes and tropes being reposted over and over again, day after day. It stopped being funny in 2008.

Psythik , (edited )

Same but I didn’t try it until it was already renamed to Linspire. First heard* about it when The Screen Savers discussed Microsoft suing them over the *indows part of the name on TechTV.

Miss that channel so much. I was pissed the fuck off when G4 came out of nowhere, bought out the channel and turned it into a Mountain Dew and Doritos network for edgy gamers. Attack of the Show was okay, though. But it was nowhere near is good as TSS was. sigh

Psythik ,

Why doesn’t he just bypass congress and call it an official act?

Psythik , (edited )

Speaking of which, it blew my mind when I discovered that .EXEs are just zip files compressed archives. Same goes for .DLLs, and a lot of other common Windows file extensions as well. (.DOC too, for example IIRC). They all open in your favorite archiver software (I like NanaZip; which is a fork of 7-Zip with a modern UI).

Psythik ,

Why don’t you just try it and see for yourself?

Remind me in about 5 hours and I’ll upload a screenshot as proof when I get home.

Psythik ,

You could always download a random exe even in Linux, you know. But I’ll handle it. Commuting home now.

Psythik ,

Well fair enough. You clearly have more knowledge on the subject than I do.

FWIW, by “zip file”, I meant that the file is a compressed archive. Apologies for implying a specific file format. That wasn’t my intention.

Psythik ,

By “zip file”, I meant a compressed archive. I’m not as nerdy as you guys are so I see now that there is a difference. I appreciate the correction.

That said, you have to admit that it’s still cool that these different file formats are nothing more than archives. Maybe not to you but it blew my mind when I first learned this.

Psythik ,

Man, even when I try to be diplomatic I still get berated.

Should have just said fuck you and called it a day. (kidding)

Psythik ,

Time to upgrade to a faster NVME (and possibly a better CPU too). Windows updates install so fast on a modern system that they don’t even bother me anymore.

Psythik ,

Computer over?
Virus = very yes?

That’s not a good prize!

Psythik ,

My experience is similar now that you mention it. The only game that crashes on my AMD machine is Spider-Man 2 Brazil, but probably because it’s a literal PS5 game that was hacked and slashed together to run natively on PC, a full year before the official port was scheduled to come out. So I don’t blame it.

I picked a good time to switch to Team Red. It’s my first AMD build ever, and after fixing a “failing SSD” issue simply by re-seating it, the PC’s been running like a dream.

Psythik ,

People still use dedicated email clients? Why?

Psythik ,

Yes they’re literally everywhere. It’s the only type of Bluetooth earbud I’ll buy.

Psythik ,

Yeah you’re definitely a psychopath. My neck would be absolutely killing me without a pillow.

Psythik ,

Birch, I ain’t paying over $100 for a freaking pillow. There’s gotta be a more affordable way.

Psythik ,

Oh no I was afraid you would suggest that. I have that pillow and it’s awful. It has the exact issue that this meme is about.

Psythik ,

lol guess I’m buying the $110 pillow, then.

Psythik ,

I mean news is literally the only reason why I visit Lemmy.

When I want memes, I go to imgur.

Psythik ,

What do you mean? There’s only 21 comments, only one top level comment is inciteful, and pretty much everyone is calling them out. There’s nothing unusual going on in here.

Psythik ,

Other than regen braking like everyone said (which really slows down a car almost effectively as brakes when set to the highest regen setting; look up “one pedal driving”), you can also slow down a car quite rapidly in a manual transmission if you skip a gear or two when downshifting. No brake lights come on when you do this, and honestly I think that they should.

It’s Too Hot to Fly Helicopters and That’s Killing People (gizmodo.com)

Six motorcyclists rode into Death Valley National Park on July 6. Only five came out alive. With temperatures reaching 128 degrees Fahrenheit in California, the cyclists faced extreme heat exposure that killed one and sent another to a local hospital, according to the National Park Service....

Psythik ,

Yeah but judging by the success of Liquid Death water, there is a certain group of people who are attracted to things with morbid names.

I have that router. It’s a great router. Never drops out, never needs to be reset. It just works, and works well.

My only complaint is that it has a tendency to refuse to switch back to a DFS channel once the airwaves are clear, but I mostly use ethernet anyway so it’s not the end of the world. I’m just happy to finally own a router that does what it’s supposed to without needing a power cycle every few weeks.

Edit: Model is Toilet Paper-Link Archer AX11000

Psythik ,

Nowhere near either.

Psythik ,

It is? Then why can’t I find a single work from home job that isn’t a fake listing?

Psythik ,

Good idea. Thanks for the tip.

BTW, which recruiting platform do you use? I’ve had zero luck on Indeed, LinkedIn, and Craigslist.

Psythik ,

Um, yes? They’re literally in every grocery store and pharmacy, right next to the lottery machine.

Psythik ,

Yes! Finally! Someone other than me likes Real-Debrid!

So much better than a torrent client, since there’s no waiting for seeds. Direct downloads of any torrent at up to 1Gbps.

Pair it with a media center app like Stremio or Plex and you won’t even miss Blu Ray and overpriced steaming apps. R-D is well worth the $3/mo.

Psythik ,

What they meant is that the Blu Ray rips aren’t recompressed again. You can download a 1:1 copy and the quality will be identical to what’s on the disc.

Psythik ,

Open up this webpage on your TV (or whatever display you use to consume media) and watch the moving line. If you can notice aliasing at your normal seating distance (I.e. the “jaggies”), then you would benefit from a higher resolution display. Otherwise I wouldn’t worry about it.

Psythik ,

I don’t even have to click to recognize that you more than likely linked to the video about people turning raw sewage into cooking oil.

Psythik ,

Who?

Psythik ,

TBF no one watches broadcast television anymore, so they’ll stick anything on the airwaves to fill the schedule.

It’s either that, or go the way of MTV and show nothing but endless reruns of one show. I don’t know why they haven’t renamed it “The Rob Dyrdek Network” by now and called it a day.

Psythik ,

Having appliances that are aware of your energy costs is a good reason. There is a massive potential for savings if your fridge and thermostat know to avoid running as much as possible during the hours of the day when electricity is the most expensive, for example. That reason alone makes smart home stuff worth it for me.

Also, having lights that adjust their color temperature automatically throughout the day works wonders for my sleep. It’s like having a blue light filter for your entire home. And don’t even get me started on how nice it is to have a smart TV. It’s basically Android for your living room, which means that you can install 3rd party apps and block ads without paying a premium. Who needs Netflix when you can just directly stream torrents to your TV?

Psythik ,

To save money on your electric bill. A smart thermostat will know when you’re not home, and automatically turn up the temperature to keep the bills down. It can also know when you’re heading home, so that it can turn it back down and have the house already cooled for you before you even open the front door.

You can also use them to automatically pre-cool your house at night, when electricity is cheaper. The residual coolness keeps temperatures down and the thermostat doesn’t have to run the A/C as much during the day, when electricity is more expensive

Psythik ,

Red onions are definitely not sweet and they definitely taste oniony.

Psythik ,

I’ve on more than one occasion saved an old laptop from being replaced simply by slapping a cheap SATA SSD into them. The owners are almost always convinced that they needed a new PC, when all they do with it is browse Facebook and watch TikTok all day.

Psythik ,

Your Skylake laptop from 2015 boots faster than my Zen 4 desktop from 2022 (with a PCIe Gen 4 NVME SSD!)

This thing takes 25 seconds just to POST. The fucked up thing is that it used to be even worse, but has slowly been improving with BIOS updates. The good news is that once it’s up and running, this machine is ready to fuck. Programs open the second I click the icon and loading screens don’t exist in games anymore. But it’s still disappointing that AMD can’t figure out how to make their shit boot faster.

Psythik ,

Yeah I already did that but it’s actually faster now to leave the memory training bypass shit off. (And like you said, bypassing memory training can lead to instability.) But when this motherboard first launched it actually did help speed up POST times.

I’m just glad that AMD is committed to working with motherboard manufacturers to keep the BIOS updates coming. This is my first AMD machine; I’m used to getting just one update over the course of my machine’s lifespan—if even that—with the various Intel rigs I’ve built over the years.

Psythik ,

You can enable “Memory Context Restore” in the BIOS. There are also “DDR5 training options” you can mess with if you know what you’re doing.

But like I said to the other person, the best way to speed up POST times is to simply keep your BIOS up to date. That alone has sped up my PC way more than any setting you can change.

Psythik ,

When I built a new PC last year, I was wondering how I managed to filled up a 4TB NVME in only 6 months… until I downloaded one of those programs that breaks down your hard drive usage.

Games, it’s all games. I don’t even consider myself a gamer. I can’t even begin to imagine the struggle of an actual gamer who is still stuck with a 256GB SATA SSD as their only high speed drive. What do you do when nearly every game that comes out these days is 100GB+ and requires an SSD?

Psythik ,

Joking aside, has anyone legitimately tried to port an app to TempleOS, just for fun?

Psythik ,

Lol let me know if you find a good video.

Psythik ,

You can always pay with Monero, which is completely anonymous if used correctly.

But I’m almost scared to mention this, given how much Lemmy hates crypto.

Psythik ,

I have gigabit internet, Debrid is still faster.

Internet speed doesn’t matter when people are leeching or a torrent just doesn’t have many seeds. Debrid solves that problem. And it’s cheaper than a VPN, which is perfect for people who don’t need a VPN for other reasons.
