Not more than sudden failure though. :)

Really feels like a great year for the Linux desktop. Also with cosmic desktop having an alpha ready in a few months.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I think they will come back very quickly in 2024 and there will a big surge in popularity thanks to cosmic, specially if it’s better than Gnome in ways people care about. Will be so much fun to see.

Technology has removed a lot of time consuming or boring jobs, but it also made us spend our time in front of the computers. The idea from the start was that we could live our lives while computers do our tasks. But we ended up on social media or in front of computer games.

It’s great for companies though, since now they make money both when we work and when we are off work. The attention economy is very real.

And girls have the opposite problem. Too many guys out there who are interested, but no way to know which ones are good.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah girls know the feelings for them comes from physical attraction, not so much from emotional attraction.

But it depends very much. Hard to generalize this.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

We all feel stupid I think. Even the smartest ones, because they question themselves a lot.

But we are all fine. You play the deck of cards you get in life.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Thank you! I like it too… Let’s enjoy this life instead of worrying about stuff we can’t change. :)

The connection is mostly that tech companies have been wanting people back to offices for years now, so it kind of made sense to place this also in tech. But I know what you mean.

1984 OP ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Price of doing business. :)

No but seriously, it’s a bit annoying that these guys are holding everyone hostage in a way. If they don’t make bank, we all suffer? Seems wrong.

1984 OP ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah it’s like that now. People come in late and leave early. I do that too since it’s fine. Only one office day is required and I make sure to come in late and leave early to beat traffic. Everyone does. :)

I use it as a day of socializing with the team. Just talking. Not much work.

1984 OP ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I know, I got very lucky with just one day in the office. And that is so important to me that I don’t even consider looking at other jobs right now. I will stay here for at least another year, probably even longer. Just because of that super nice single office day per week.

Every other job ad I see have “50% in office”.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella says ‘AI is really in the air now’ and is planning to train 2 million Gen Z in India with tech skills::Microsoft says 90% of Indian leaders need workers prepared for the rise of AI—but 78% of workers say they don’t have the right knowledge.

Nvidia was the one starting to fart AI over and over again and look at their stock price now.

All the big tech companies are riding the hype and it seems to work. Now their companies are apparently worth a lot more because of AI, which will probably turn into nothing more then small user assistants in people’s Office software.

I won’t even watch 10 minutes. Video is really a huge time waster.

This is how I read it also… Scroll-scroll… Bullshit statements, scroll, marketing, marketing, self congratulaty shit, marketing, scroll, scroll…

Where does it say what they are going to actually do??

Scroll, scroll, scroll, give up, post on Lemmy. :)

You can’t buy people anymore but you can buy most of their awake hours. It’s called a job.

People sell those hours because they have to. It’s called a salary.

1984 OP ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Those workers are kissing ass to make their careers.

Sundar is a complete idiot if he believes what those guys say. And he probably doesn’t, but it sounds good to the press I guess.

1984 OP ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

It’s the same everywhere. Companies will kick people out when they want to. Any talk of family or loyalty is extreamly manipulative.

Haha yeah some days it sounds pretty good. :)

My Motorola Edge 30 is fantastic and the best phone I’ve ever had. I think the massive focus on Samsung and Pixel phones are paid and bought for by ad companies.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I love that it’s default android and no crap installed. And it has fantastic battery time. I can easily see myself keeping this phone for a long time and maybe later put Lineage on it just to get rid of Googles tracking.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

They have said 3 years of software updates. It’s on Android 13 now and got it’s last security update in December 2023.

Not sure about arm version but probably you can find info about that online. It’s an Edge 30 Pro.

I've recently turned 20. What highly specific advice you, lemmy users, would offer me?

A lot of people answering this struggle to understand what highly-specific means. I’m looking to, for the sake of experiment, highly-specific advice that gives a reader clear understanding of what they should do. Unlike the vague advice, on the contrary, that may be too abstract to get implementing it right away....

Don’t think you know it all. It’s extreamly common to see young people being confident and cocky, despite having almost no life experience. Understand the enormous value of listening to people who have been in your shoes before. Almost everyone you see was your age before.

And with listen, I don’t mean “do what they say”. Just listen and think about what they say. Maybe they are wrong. Maybe not.

Celebs are really not interesting. Zzz.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah it’s my opinion here, not planet earth. :)

Do you all have any tips on activities to do yourself, instead of consuming content all the time?

I’m pretty sick of my content addiction, like watching youtube or netflix all the time. I would rather be spending my time otherwise so figured fun things are the best to start. Do you have tips for fun things to do? Or how I could search for them?...

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Life is pretty boring, which is why content addiction works… :/

You can’t “upgrade” windows, only downgrade it with patches and new versions that make your computer slower and more annoying.

Plasma 6 comes at the end of the month. Maybe upgrade to that instead. :)

I guess you don’t enjoy food or something. :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah I understand. I think it’s very time consuming also, specially with a family that expects new food almost every day. Im probably getting takeout food at least 2 times per week now.

I use Asus routers, they have good hardware. But then I install Fresh Tomato on them to give them full professional routing capabilities. It’s amazing what’s included in that, including vlan support, dns masquerade support etc etc.

I haven’t seen anyone scaring people away. All I see is people saying “try Linux” and others complaining that it’s too much Linux encouragement. They want to stay with their windows. Not our fault. :)

I like a small Linux community so I’m fine. The more people who stay on windows, the more likely it is that Microsoft feels like they have enough users to leave the rest of us alone.

Guys will put up with a lot… But not forever.

Same as girls also. They may be miserable in a relationship for a long time, hoping something will change, and keep remember the first months when the guy was loving and caring.

Relationships are hard to keep going for a long time.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Didn’t know that, thanks for clarification!

Then I suggest two piholes. :)
