I guess I’d take note if Trump’s kids or Kushner were convicted, but then they were in and out of the White House far more frequently than Hunter. Nepotism ran rampant.
Long past that point… If your not on mastodon I don’t really care what you have to say. Bluesky is just another capitalist platform used to motize working class people’s content.
I’ve oddly seen lemmy posts on mastodon lately and it kinda secured to me this is the real “web 3.0”
There are a high proportion of far-left types on here. I could see them wanting something to be government-owned or something. But wanting a company to be privately-owned rather than publicly-owned seems odd to me.
And the “enshittification” comments seem odd too.
“Enshittification” isn’t some sort of catch-all term for a company doing worse. Doctorow coined it to refer to a point where a company that had been losing money to grow a customer base ends the rapid-growth phase and starts monetizing that base.
That makes business sense for some companies with low marginal costs and high fixed costs, and especially where there is network effect, like social media companies.
But here, the company is profitable, and not unreasonably so. Like, they don’t have a monetization phase that they need to transition to.
In 2023 alone, Raspberry Pi generated $266 million in revenue and $66 million in gross profit.
Raspberry Pi priced its IPO on the London Stock Exchange on Tuesday morning at £2.80 per share, valuing it at £542 million, or $690 million at today’s exchange rate.
Kids “easily traceable” from photos used to train AI models, advocates warn.
I mean, that’s true, and could be a perfectly-legitimate privacy issue, but that seems like an issue independent of training AI models. Like, doing facial recognition and such isn’t really new.
Stable Diffusion or similar generative image AI stuff is pretty much the last concern I’d have over a photo of me. I’d be concerned about things like:
Automated inference of me being associated with other people based on facial or other recognition of us together in photos.
Automated tracking using recognition in video. I could totally see someone like Facebook or Google, with a huge image library, offering a service to store owners or something to automatically identify potential shoplifters if they let them run automated recognition on their store stuff. You could do mass surveillance of a whole society once you start connecting cameras and doing recognition.
I’m not really super-enthusiastic about use of fingerprint data for biometrics, since I’ve got no idea how far that is traveling. Not the end of the world, probably, but if you’ve been using, say, Google or Apple automated fingerprint unlocking, I don’t know whether they have enough data to forge a thumbprint and authenticate as you wherever else. It’s a non-revocable credential.
Like, I feel that there are very real privacy issues associated with having a massive image database, and that those may have been ignored. It just…seems a little odd that people would ignore all that, and then only have someone write about it when it comes to running an LLM on it, which is pretty limited in actual issues that I’d have.
And all that aside, let’s say that someone is worried about someone generating images of 'em with an LLM.
Even if you culled photos of kids from Stable Diffusion’s base set, the “someone could generate porn” concern in the article isn’t addressed. Someone can build their own model or – with less training time – a LoRA for a specific person.
kagis
Here’s an entire collection of models and LoRAs trained on a particular actress on Civitai. The Stable Diffusion base model doesn’t have them, which is exactly why people went out and built their own. And “actress” alone isn’t gonna be every model trained on a particular person, just probably a popular one.
And that is even before you get to various techniques that start with a base image of a person, do no training on that image at all, and then try to generate surrounding parts of the image using a model.
They NEED majority retirement laws. They could soften up the pain by phasing it in as the old ones die out, thus increasing the odds that the old jackasses in power will actually adopt it.
You are far safer behind me than in front of me. It can take me over two US football fields (200 yards or roughly 180 meters) to come to a full stop and it takes more distance if my trailer is empty. The average car can stop in half that distance. Most cars turn into tin cans when hit by a rig at 25 mph.
If you see a number of trucks all moving into the same lane, might consider getting in the same lane, behind us. Odds are pretty good we either saw something in the lane ahead or we heard about something over the CB.
I can see you playing on your phone while driving. Cops in some states have been known to hitch rides with truck drivers in order to catch distracted drivers.
Mammals have fuck all in terms of adaptability tactics. Only way for us to adapt, is mix our genes and hope it suffices. The only way we can do that, is reproduction (funghi are op). Now that means more of us in a system that has limited resources (called carrying capacity). We die in order to prevent competing with our children.
This is the reason animals have different lifespans depending on how likely they are to survive in nature. Take a rat and north american opossum for example. Far apart in terms of evolution and size, but have roughly the same life expectancy due to predation. Wolves can technically live up to 17 years, but become fertile at a very young age because the average lifespan in the wild is 5 years due to disease.
It is also the reason menopause exists. It is rare, and found in elephnts and orca’s (both matriarchial species) and humans. This is because the life experience of the matriarch is too valuable. To be able to keep the matriarch around without her being able to compete with her own offspring, infertility is incuded. Post-menopausal orca’s pimp out their youngest sons because it is the best way to pass on genetics they have left. Imagine your mom being your finman.
Humans are the odd one out here since we also have andropause, the male equivalent. A paradox on male reproductive strategy. Which afaik doesn’t exist anywhere else. This is why humans live so long compared to most mammals. Grandparents are important.
Some animals don’t really age. Lobsters simply die from growing too big and unable to get enough oxygen. Some species of octopi stop eating after mating all the way to starving to death. Some animals mate until they die from exhaustion. The immortal jellyfish pretty much recycles itself. And bot just animals need death for renewal. New zealand has a forest which reproduces only after a forest fire. Which happen rarely over hundreds of years due to being in a region with lots of heavy rain. The trees themselves are pretty much immortal, and don’t reproduce while living.
Senesence and death are essential for ecosysems and adaptation of life. Regardless of whether or not keeping an aging body alive is hard or possible.
We age because our cells “choose” to. We have the equipment to live on “forever.” It’s just not our meta.
Scaldingly hot take: this is not a good thing, but one of the biggest criticisms of the Creation Club is that its content is just one off items and whatnot, and not enough quests. Well, there you go, a questline.
The Creation Kit might end up saving this game, too. I still think there are over 50% odds it pulls a Cyberpunk and is remembered fondly.
I say this as someone who went to school for this stuff and does a lot of surveying and statistics daily.
This doesn’t work when you’re comparing things that are going to be neck and neck. In order forecast with very high confidence, with something that is neck and neck, you need a huuuuge sample size and absolutely perfect surveying conditions.
The reason polls have been a toss up lately isn’t because the polling is bad. The problem is that the big races were also ways going to be nail biters, and we’re looking at the odds that a race will be 1% one way or another.
The good polls have been pretty damn close to the final vote percentages numbers. The problem is that the variance needed to swing a win right or left is absolutely minuscule. We’re often talking about percentages that are less than 2%, or less than 1%.
My mom’s top choice was Theophilus. Which is a little odd because we’re not Greek, and a would have been ironic since it means “love of god” and I ended up an atheist.
Any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the Galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through and still know where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with.
“It comes from a very ancient democracy, you see…"
“You mean, it comes from a world of lizards?”
“No,” said Ford, who by this time was a little more rational and coherent than he had been, having finally had the coffee forced down him, “nothing so simple. Nothing anything like so straightforward. On its world, the people are people. The leaders are lizards. The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people.”
“Odd,” said Arthur, “I thought you said it was a democracy.”
“I did,” said Ford. “It is.”
“So,” said Arthur, hoping he wasn’t sounding ridiculously obtuse, “why don’t people get rid of the lizards?”
“It honestly doesn’t occur to them,” said Ford. “They’ve all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they’ve voted in more or less approximates to the government they want.”
“You mean they actually vote for the lizards?”
“Oh yes,” said Ford with a shrug, “of course.”
“But,” said Arthur, going for the big one again, “why?”
“Because if they didn’t vote for a lizard,” said Ford, “the wrong lizard might get in.”
How are people coping with games that just won’t run on Linux (aside from leaving them behind)? Do you dual boot Windows? Virtualize? What’s your strategy for this?...
My solution is “have a large game collection, and move on to the next game”. The odd bad game will likely get better in a future version of Wine. Proton 9-something even picked up support for some of the fussier Japanese VNs (but not well enough for IMHHW, alas).
With how disappointing the latest sequels of famous franchises had been during this first half of the 2020s (except resident evil, yay) I expect GTA to fall a bit short as well…...
If you are going by titles, GTA 6 is expected to have a reasonably deep single player storyline filled with cultural references.
The more recent trailer just seemed like them recreating events that happened in real life, and less being a mockery to create commentary on events of real life.
IMO this is the distinguishing difference I noticed from trailers of previous titles and this current one. Of course it was literally only a minute and 15 seconds of trailer, but it does just seem a little odd to me. Of course, when I wrote a small essay the only comments were “bro piss off it’s GTA” and “it’s GTA you’re reading too much into it.”
Most just don’t care. And many more have not played the earlier titles which were a little more brazen in their commentary due to the world these characters are living in – CJ as the experience of living in a poorer urban area surrounded by a wider richer city, where you have the dichotomy of what is happening in the story alongside the events on the radio (mostly the hosts reactions), or Niko as an immigrant in New York which brings a different perspective but keeps that thematic class separation while having some pretty decent social commentary.
GTA5 just doesn’t hit those marks IMO. Yes, there’s active class divide what with Trevor and Michael, but the storyline and the events of all 3 characters definitely have some emotional moments, IMO it just doesn’t hit the same points. Part of this I think is due to each of these characters almost acting as a sort of archetype, not necessarily of character but of game play. Michael is very much set for success, so you can easily progress. Franklin isn’t, and thus has to work for his status. And Trevor is the maniac who just blows shit up.
In terms of social commentary, there isn’t much that the game actually tries to say, IMO as a byproduct of their overemphasis of the heavily conservative and hyper-capitalist radio, which further is failed by Trevor and Michael being the most average Americans who are part of the problem. And while I like Franklin and his story, it’s ultimately just another story of someone in a bad spot trying to do better, and falling victim to how hard it is to get out. Which, yeah, that’s a decent and very real message, but it’s undermined by it all working out for him and owning a business – don’t worry y’all, crime pays as long as it’s with the right friends!
So, for me to see the trailer of GTA6 just literally recreating the events that happened in the real world, I sort of feel like the creative insanity where GTA allows us to see whacky shit that could never actually exist is highly diminished as a result of that. Again, it was under 2 minutes of footage and of course there’s plenty more.
I also personally think RDR2 is not fun and the hype around it is pretty much entirely manufactured as “it’s so good because it’s R* and the ultimate realism!”. Well, that “realism” made for shit gameplay for horses and boring fetch quests. It’s a beautiful game, it’s got a great story, it is not a good game because of that. That’s not to say it is terrible through and through and never has fun moments, I just personally was more frustrated with the game than I was enthralled with it for a majority of my time playing it. Shooting is nice though.
I must also say, I’ve never been a particularly die-hard fan of GTA or R*. I grew up playing their games at friends houses, so they’re really nostalgic to me. RDR and RD1 were great for their time, Revolver still holds up pretty well today through emulation. Slow for sure, but it holds up. GTAIV was my first real experience at open-world sandbox games, and while I enjoyed my time with it, it definitely is not my sort of game for long-term enjoyment. I can only play the story so many times and then get bored just driving around like a maniac. The best part of IV’s replayability is the physics, which seemed to have been drastically scaled back for GTA 5.
And I haven’t even gotten into what GTA:O has done, so I don’t have high expectations. I think your assumption of the developer output perspective is likely very apt. GTA5 came out in 2013, 11 years ago. It will likely be on 4 generations of consoles, unless they choose to only sell GTA6 for the PS6 and Xbox1920.
There is no way that their focus is on a long term single player experience. There’s just no way.
It’s actually fake, though. IP phones “play” that. Also, when on a call, they insert "comfort noise, that very low hiss you may hear, to augment the odd feeling most get with crystal clear VOIP audio.
Unfortunately, "cheap meat’ is an oxymoron in my country. “Cheap veggies” almost is as well, but it’s getting a bit better on that front (shoutout to Odd Bunch; I wish you’d expand west). I’ll see what I can do about incorporating tatties into my diet since multiple people have recommended them. I’m aware that they’re cheap, but they generally make me feel sick to my stomach. Happen to have some good tips on how I might “hide” them in meals?

It doesn’t work that way for me. I have been so cold that clothing didn’t make me not cold. Even here where it rarely ever gets to freezing. Hot weather, I can slow down, sitting still in the shade with a breeze I can be comfortable from 90F to about 100F. Don’t know about hotter, we haven’t reached it yet.
I don’t try to do work outside when it’s that hot. If daytime event in the sun - hat or visor, long sleeved loose linen shirt and pants, and oddly enough, Merino wool thong and socks are often more comfortable than anything else.
Hot yoga is 90-103 so I guess I can also move in the heat without freaking out but they manage the humidity, it’s different from outside. And I sweat a lot in those classes.
Any of these I prefer to being cold, cannot get warm. Maybe I need to talk to Wim Hof, but it seems better to be tolerant of heat, than cold.
I often take painkillers (acetaminophen aka paracetamol), but I’ve noticed that it’s much more effective if I take them TOGETHER with my ADHD medication (ritalin aka methylphenidate) + my morning coffee. If I don’t take them AT the same time, the painkiller is far less effective....
So it’s possible both localized vasodilation and vasoconstriction are causing these headaches, considering the times the headache is worst ("cannabis use or after waking up) and mild but constant (after stimulants like caffeine).
But caffeine is not causing any headaches. Did I accidentally imply that somewhere? It’s rather enhancing the painkiller’s effect. In fact, a few times I drank around 14 espressos just for fun and curiosity, and I never got any headaches. Although, normally, if I don’t also drink a glass of water immediately afterwards, I have a reasonable chance of developing a headache, which is not due to dehydration, oddly enough, because drinking other hydrating substances (like milk in the coffee) does not help; It has to be water. Another reason to think this is that the headache can already start a few minutes in, which is way too fast for dehydration to happen.
I know this doesn’t add any value (and probably only confusion), but taking coffee at certain times, as well as sugar and other kind of (especially processed) foods, does indeed lead to headaches, but these moments are just random moments during the day (or week) which I can only just intuitively feel; so I can feel when they are ‘at play’, it’s like I’m just more ‘vulnerable’ to certain substances at these moments. That’s the only difference. Took me years to realize. I know this sounds wacky as hell. Way too weird and vague. Especially considering I have no allergies or any other medical condition whatsoever (same for family members). (Yes perhaps ADHD but even I doubt that to some extend.) So perhaps best to ignore this last paragraph, because I don’t know what to make of it, except being just sensitive.
I’m living in west europe. These blood pressure machines are actually not that expensive. God, I feel stupid to not have searched for this sooner. I even see the Omron devices for ~70 euros. I’m in great student loan debt but I’ll gladly make room for this device
