If you'e been wondering how to monetize your fediverse posting ... https://sub.club has good news for you!

"If you post quality content and you've developed a loyal audience, you should be able to ask your most passionate followers to support you with a premium subscription.

That's a promise not available on the Fediverse ...until now."

@dimillian has a short threa announcing availabiilty in @IceCubesApp and sub.club advisor @quillmatiq has more info here.

sub.club's a project of The BLVD, Inc, the makers of @mammoth. I know there was a lot of skepticism when Marc Benioff, Mozilla, Long Ventures et al, funded Mammoth ... with so many good apps out there, how are they expecting to get VC-level returns on their investment? But if sub.club can tap into the creator economy, there's clearly money to be made!

I’m usually not all that thrilled with Klingon-focused Star Trek episodes, but Barge of the Dead sure is a richly-staged interpretation of the Klingon afterlife.

socprof ,
@socprof@masto.ai avatar

@mimarek1 In general, me neither but this is more of a B'Elanna episode and we know she struggled with her Klingon side. Dealing with it and accepting it has been part of her character growth. As a result she also struggled with her relationship with both her parents. Something she manages to find some peace with in her relationship with Janeway (reaching for her first at the end of her afterlife experience). @allstartrek

Only God Was Above Us | 2024 album by Vampire Weekend

Only God Was Above Us is the fifth studio album by American indie rock band Vampire Weekend, released on April 5, 2024, through Columbia Records. It marks the third collaboration between the band and their longtime producer Ariel Rechtshaid. It is also the first album recorded by the band as a trio of vocalist-guitarist Ezra Koenig, bassist Chris Baio and drummer Chris Tomson after the 2016 departure of keyboardist Rostam Batmanglij; 2019’s Father of the Bride, the first post-Batmanglij Vampire Weekend album, was created and promoted by Koenig as a solo project with Baio and Tomson only involved for the album’s tours.

I had to actually read the FDA page to figure out how this is a problem. Too much Vitamin D for infants with impaired renal (Kidney) function can be bad. It’s unlikely to impact the average infant consuming it.

It takes months of very high consumption of Vitamin D to become toxic. Like 60,000 IU per day (for an adult) for 3+ months continuously.

For comparison baby formula normally contains about 30 IU per 100mL, and they drink about 800ml per day as a newborn (or a total of 180IU per day)

Infant Vitamin D drops are 400IU per drop, these are recommended to give daily in Northern States and Canada in addition to what they get from other sources.

Morning Mastodonians!

Obi the Plott Hound is doing better. Not sure if it is the meds or just time. He's still not eating right, but that's because we are giving him treats to hide the pills. Not good, because he has a sensitive digestive system and is allergic to every protein but lamb! He can eat small amounts of others but it never ends well. Disappointed with the whole vet visit thing - thousands of dollars and 3 days spent in the waiting room and we're no wiser. Not their fault but still.

I am going to take tomorrow off. We have a Monday holiday (Labor Day) here in the US, so that will make it a nice 4 day weekend. We will be taking a day trip to Portsmouth NH on Saturday with some friends, so I'm looking forward to that - food, shopping, and, of course, drinking. Not much else is planned. They did put in a bit of the new deck at the pool, but it will be too cool for swimming. They won't finish before I close the pool, unfortunately - sigh. It does look good so far though.

: I finished February's Son (Harry McCoy #2 - dark but good) and am on to A Death in Venice (Commissario Brunetti #1).

Dead Tree Book : The Siege by Helen Dunmore.

Ebook : Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro - it's supposed to be good, right? Boring so far.

And I hope to get Fallen Land to the table for some solo boardgaming.

Power, Sex, Suicide Mitochondria and the Meaning of Life by Nick Lane, 2005

Mitochondria are tiny structures within all our cells, believed to have once evolved from bacteria living independent lives. Drawing on cutting edge research, this book explores the fundamental role they play in some of the biggest themes in biology: evolution, the origin of the sexes, in growth, ageing, disease, and in death.

I just want to shout out all the older (40+) Autistic and Neurodivergent folks here. On most of the social media sites I'm on it seems to be nothing but teens to 20's so I don't get to see a lot of experiences and viewpoints from older ND's except here. It's really awesome to hear from you and see you making your way through life and know that you're the way you are still, and that life hasn't completely glued the mask on you and you still experience the joys and experiences and difficulties that us younger folks have in some ways. It gives me hope to know that I'm probably not going to just be increasingly camoflauging to be like neurotypical folks as I age and I can look forward to still living life my way, maybe even more so. You're important and appreciated. <3

@arcadetoken Thanks!! I was not diagnosed until I was 63 and was still on Twitter at the time. The ND community there was lovely but, as you say, much younger with a whole different set of experiences and expectations.

The @actuallyautistic here is quite lovely with a variety of ages and experiences. I find the people here incredibly supportive and I feel very comfortable with them.

Did anyone else's female family members teach them how to "be feminine"? Like, style their hair, do their makeup, wear dresses?
I was a tomboy until years after I moved away from home & in hindsight I think it just felt safer & easier.
For a long time, I resented my mother & aunts because none of them ever sat me down & taught me how to be a girl or woman. I'd look at my friends & younger sisters & it was obvious that they'd gotten the message.

AnAutieAtUni ,
@AnAutieAtUni@beige.party avatar

@gremlinchild No one ever taught me either and I felt the same.

I remember an aunt, who I’m not that close to simply due to living far apart, once taught me maybe 1 basic fact about makeup. That was about applying a base layer colour for eye shadow. And that’s it. But I was amazed! And that’s only because I was given makeup as a gift one Christmas and she happened to be there when I was puzzling over it. Magazine tutorials etc never made any sense or looked right.

Been given ‘girly’ gifts and I just don’t understand them. Much prefer functional things. I get more joy out of that. Makeup etc feels like changing myself to please others as I simply don’t understand why someone would do it.

Have since learned a few things, but only really since my 30s or so. I wanted to wear better makeup for my dad’s funeral and so went to a large department store that did a makeup demo on me - only stumbled across this being possible by chance! And yes, that’s basically how I do makeup now and maybe forever!! Very little change. Often just wear none.

Same with hair, except I was basically reprimanded by my mother for having unwieldy hair. AKA my hair is naturally curly, hers is not, and she had no idea what to do with my hair except extremely painful brushing and making it all seem like my fault. So, I’ve been unlearning that for a decade or more - a very rewarding journey. Mother continues to ask in vain when I’ll “style” my hair (with artificial curls) again as it gives me a “perfect” look, versus natural.

Clothes - I found this a bit easier to study and understand. But I still couldn’t understand colours. I have since paid someone to help with this! 🤣 I now know what colours suit me and that basically most don’t suit me… So this is why copying friends didn’t quite work! I wear what I want, but I do like knowing which colours can make me look half-dead so I can avoid those when wanting to make a good first impression!! 😆

@AnAutieAtUni @gremlinchild @actuallyautistic my mother tried to show me how to perform femininity, but she's not overly fem herself. As soon as I was old enough to pick my own clothes it's been mostly black jeans and quirky t-shirts which solves the problem of what colours work lol. I think I found my style at university when I was introduced to heavy metal and goth music. It hasn't changed much since 😜 I still don't do makeup, but I have worked out how to stop my curly hair looking frizzy.

When I narrate an audiobook partly or totally for royalties, I usually get free review copies from Audible. They are for Audible only, not other platforms.

Specifically, they are for Audible US and Audible UK.

You can access those Audible storefronts from other regions by changing the location settings on the Audible phone app or a location override link on the website.

I'd love copies for more platforms & regions but it's out of my hands. (Talk to the behemoths!)

ShaulaEvans OP ,
@ShaulaEvans@zirk.us avatar

Audiobook reviews make a big difference for boosting sales. They signal to the platforms that people like the books, and the platform algorithms then boost the visibility.

Reviews that are specific about what a listener liked and why can also encourage like-minded shoppers to buy the books.

Reviews go a long way to helping me and the lovely indie authors I narrate for.

To me, people not masking despite what informations are available about Covid 19 doesn't seem strange or unusual.
I'm not even surprised by most people ignoring, how many people still "have a cold" at the moment, despite it being summer.
What feels unusual to me is regularly seing people who act differently(even if it's just here on Mastodon).
A lot of my life was like that, people around me acted in a way, that if questioned, couldn't be defended rationally, but still wasn't changed.

I know how some people react to this, but I do think that one of the main influences here is "neurotype".
I don't think we'd suddenly live in a utopia without any problems, if the majority was autistic, but I'm sure, the general situation would be much better.
It's not "Autism Supremacy" to notice, which people are usually more health-, environmentally- and socially concious and what would be the consequence, if more people acted that way.
