Some lessons I learned after being in a bunch of weddings:

• Hydrate the newlyweds
• Feed the newlyweds
• Have sticky tape with you
• Tape the card to the present
• Do not leave the newlywed’s side and have the wedding party help
• Before the ceremony, your job is to keep the groom calm and hydrated
• Before the ceremony, your job is to keep any of the groom’s friends from putting ideas in his head
• Professional photographer, the most expensive you can afford.

How about you? Any advice?

@GayDeceiver As the weird neurodivergent people who are hard to slot in to a table plan, be prepared to be sat next to the most boring man on earth, their princess 10 year old daughter and the wife who lives vicariously through the daughter. Sheesh. I've been to some great weddings (one at a fabulous Greek church in London and reception at the Hotel Cafe Royal sticks in my mind) but that one was dull til the thunder and lightning started and we all had a good excuse to move 😆 @actuallyautistic

What is it about the text messages and emails sent by older people that make me feel like I'm having a stroke?

Maybe they're used to various shortcuts in their writing that they picked up before autocorrect became common, but these habits are too idiosyncratic for autocorrect to handle properly. However, that doesn't explain the emails I've had to decipher that were typed on desktop keyboards. Has anyone else younger than 45 or so felt similarly frustrated with geriatrics' messages?

@asklemmy

jimmux ,

Similar to that. Nouns that have a somewhat specific meaning in our business context, like Investor, Adviser, Product, Portfolio, etc.

locuester ,

^ yes, this exactly. It was the equivalent of living on the dark net in the eves. Total Wild West.

Not all > 45 tho. I’d say 40-55 or so who were also “nerds” or “geeks” as kids.

14 Maria A. Petrova: The Diplomatic Service in Early Modern Russia

https://doi.org/10.1515/9783110672008-014

@emdiplomacy@hcommons.social avatar

1549 is considered the foundation date of the Russian foreign office, but until the 18th century Russian tsars preferred to permanent diplomatic representatives abroad. Major reforms were only introduced under the reign of Tsar Peter I.

However, a change in attitude towards foreign already followed the dynastical change in the 1610s: restrictions were eased. Moreover, the tsar began to welcome permanent representatives from other territories and to establish permanent diplomats himself. (3/4)

By intensifying interaction with other and rulers, Russian became cultural brokers who contributed to the transfer of people, objects and ideas from Europe to Russia.

Petrova argues that the introduction of the European diplomatic rank system and ceremonial was aimed more at demonstrating the superiority of Russian rulers than at creating equal relations with other powers. (4/4)

@hugo @bookstodon it’s an amazing creation, and a precarious survival. I wrote some words about it (as well as about the Erasmus - Moore friendship underpinning Utopia itself) in my own book, North Sea Crossings.

it is a puzzle as old as time... you buy one breakfast burrito on hopes that it will suffice, when even as you do it, you know you should get yourself two.

We humans and how we love to manufacture our suffering

aaronesilvers OP ,
@aaronesilvers@jawns.club avatar

we need some struggle with our joy to add some depth to the distinction to happiness -- to accentuate our sensory experience of it. I think that's true of everyone, but maybe useful/profound to wrestle or grok that for the @actuallyautistic.

Pema Chodron, among other buddhists, teaches us that to be human is to suffer. But that doesn't mean it's all suffering. Just that it's definitely a piece of the puzzle.

That's why on an otherwise perfect morning, I pine for more breakfast burritos.

Liebe Community,

Two different psychs now told me I have "autistic traits" significant enough to have fucked my life.
I'm functional enough that I don't qualify for state help, and won't be able to afford private care for a while, so I have to DIY.
Could anyone recommend resources on how autistic adults can learn to deal with the condition, especially when it comes to socialization?
Thank you <3

@actuallyautistic Anyone ever tell you that you were being "too negative" or a "Debby downer" when stating facts about something? Just happened to me earlier with my family. In this case it was reasons why I prefer not to travel often (routine change haha). The whole time I was thinking, "but I'm not trying to be negative..."

chevalier26 OP ,
@chevalier26@mastodon.social avatar

@melindrea @Sci_Fi_FanGirl @actuallyautistic Idk if you're familiar with the YouTuber Paige Layle, but she made an interesting observation about "shop dads"; dads who have a workshop they retreat to when stressed or overwhelmed, and how it could be an indicator of undiagnosed autism.

I thought...hmm...my dad has always had a shop. In fact, he owns his own business and is doing contracting work all the time.

@melindrea @Sci_Fi_FanGirl @actuallyautistic Also hilarious to me that 90% of the time, my family never needs to hire someone to do maintenance work because my dad just "knows" how to do it. He is insanely good at what he does.

He shows me the electrical diagrams he draws for welding equipment/breaker boxes sometimes and it's like...how can you do all of this so flawlessly 😂
