Is the only argument against lab-grown meat that it disrupts an existing industry? Because I’ve yet to hear a legitimate reason why this is a bad idea.

Thorny_Insight ,

I don’t think it’s a reason to not go ahead with it either but then again it’s not too far off from the similar argument about replacing actors/knowledge workers with AI or factory workers/truck drivers with automation. It is true that while it may provide better and even cheaper product it does also come with a loss of work for ton of people.

Lab grown meat is still meat and it’s not processed from a bunch of ingredients it’s grown, just not on an animal. I’m sorry lemmy is so toxic. People should be allowed to not know everything, I think.

I think you’re allowed to “not know everything” in most places. Usually, the issue comes when you make a factually-incorrect or demonstrably-false statement with no explanation to back it up. brian , in Two newborn twins need a one-dose treatment that would save their lives: Zolgensma, a $2.1M drug. Insurance (also the mother's employer) cut coverage of the drug the day after they were born.

Interesting how insurance companies demand restrictions to “special enrollment” periods or specified times to begin coverage. It’s a tactic to prevent people from beginning coverage before taking on significant healthcare costs and then cancelling after their treatment is finished.

But yet, an insurance company is able to change coverage without following similar practices? Is just about as close to a bait and switch as you can get.

Nachorella ,

If he could just stop eating approximately 17 avocado toasts an hour 24 hours a day this wouldn’t be a problem.

neidu2 ,

I never had an avocado toast in my life, so I have no idea of the cost (or even if they’re any good), but I feel that 17 per hour is at least an order of magnitude short for that kind of budget.

mosiacmango ,

Its great and simple to make at home. Good bread, a clove of garlic, an avocado, salt and pepper. Make toast, rub garlic on toast then discard, evenly coat toast with avocado and finally salt and pepper to taste. Its creamy and filling, and you can easily modify it. Add chives or rocket, add hot pepper flakes or hot honey. Some bacon adds a lot, as usual.

Depending on where you live, the cost for this at a cafe will be around $10. 17 avocado toasts an hour x $10 is $170/hr. With 720hrs in a month, that works out to 122k/month, or roughly his budget. The posters numbers were spot on.

neidu2 ,

That’s a lot more expensive than I thought it would be. No wonder millenials are ruining the economy.

This is good. Less people in jail means less money spent there. That money can be spent elsewhere like in the community to prevent these outcomes in the first place. ryathal , (edited )

If your trial date is over a year out, a plea deal that get you out in 6 months looks a lot better.

BlitzoTheOisSilent ,

You’ve never heard of a sentencing with the phrase “time served?” That’s what they’re usually referring to, you’ve already served X amount of time being held in jail, and that will count towards/cover whatever your sentencing is.

RedWeasel ,

Yeah. No telling how many pleas just so they can get out sooner, but may not even be the guilty party or could have gotten a better deal. It is also easier to argue that you are doing something to better yourself, such as therapy or working for example, that may effect a sentence when you are not in jail.

Nougat ,

More to the point, with cash bail, poor people are fucked and wealthy people walk out.

Remember, cops can arrest you and charge you with whatever they want, whether there’s evidence or not, whether there’s exculpatory evidence or not. Cop feels like you need to spend some time in jail? Arrest for disorderly and/or resisting.

Removing cash bail minimizes that, but does not eliminate it. You will still take a ride, and it’s elementary to handle someone harshly so that they react and get more serious charges.

orclev , in Emergency Exit Slide Detaches As Delta Flight Takes Off, Forces Return to New York JFK

Potentially relevant piece of info, it was a Boeing. Might be bad maintenance, might be manufacturing defect, we’ll need to see what the investigation turns up. At the very least the fact it was a Boeing plane raises some eyebrows.

Edit: rereading it mentions it was a 33 year old plane with a history of problems. Leaning more towards bad maintenance, although if it was that prone to issues maybe it should have been taken out of service before now.

BlackPenguins ,

I was going to say do we even need to bother asking who manufactured the plane anymore.

jettrscga ,

Boeing and Airbus are the only large passenger aircraft manufacturers that I’m aware of.

Don’t get me wrong, Boeing’s doing awful lately. But even on a good day the odds are high it’s Boeing, and even higher when news outlets know people want to hear about every fail from Boeing suddenly.

meco03211 ,

Is Airbus seeing similar rates of failure on their older models? Not that you personally need to know, just that question should be asked/answered if we’re going to give Boeing the benefit of the doubt.

jettrscga ,

Great question, I’m curious too. I definitely don’t want to give Boeing to benefit of the doubt. Just wanted to give perspective that there aren’t a lot of aircraft manufacturer options.

Buddahriffic ,

All I know right now is I’ve seen a ton of stories lately about different Boeing failures and can’t think of a single such story about an Airbus failure. The only thing that pops into mind in general about Airbus is that one really big plane they were making kept getting delayed, which from my perspective actually sounds good because it’s a sign they might not be cutting corners like Boeing seems to be.

elliot_crane ,

I fly Delta a fair bit just because they’ve fucked me around the least out of the major US carriers. They also use Embraer models for shorter regional flights. However, yes, you’re correct in saying the odds are high that any given commercial jet in the air is a Boeing or an Airbus.

orclev ,

Could still be a manufacturing defect on a replacement part, but obviously not on anything that is original. It’s more likely though that whatever it is failed from lack of maintenance or improperly done maintenance at this point.

ColeSloth ,

For a thirty three year old plane, I wouldn’t call it too much of a “history of problems”. It was like 4 issues and one of them was hitting a bird.

Dumb dogs.

GreyEyedGhost ,

There’s good evidence that cats are the only self-domesticated animal we have. Coupled with the very strong evidence that stupidity, complacency and obedience were the traits selected for in man-directed domestication efforts, it’s no surprise that cats are both more willful and more clever than most other domestic animals.

They can still be an enormous pain in the ass, just in different ways than dogs, so pick your poison. Cats, for me.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

There is some evidence that dogs self-domesticated, at least to a certain degree, although they’re also some evidence that they were domesticated as food, so who knows? Stefan Milo did a recent video on the subject.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0D3tfZERCE

GreyEyedGhost ,

There is some evidence, but there is also a lot of evidence to dogs having a lot of selection pressure put on them by humans, even before all the relatively modern breeds. Dogs have more expressive faces than cats (or wild dogs), use expressions that are easily read by humans, and can read human expressions. Cats still often look like their wild cousins.

There is also good evidence that cats were domesticated during the Neolithic revolution, while dogs were domesticated much earlier, while hunter-gatherers were the norm. So it could be that their domestication just hasn’t progressed as much as dogs’ and other animals’ have.

Everythingispenguins ,

I doubt there he has that coved 100%. According to the AARP “…1 in 5 adults of Medicare age, out-of-pocket health care costs in 2021 exceeded $2,000…” Or say he wants to go anywhere. It is likely he can’t drive, and if he could he couldn’t afford to keep a car, so that is rideshare or taxis for anywhere the senior van doesn’t go. Assuming there even is one.

But no he is most likely getting more than 3K but it is eaten up by the care home. Medicare is terrible at covering any type of assisted living. It covers full on hospital stays but the light care that keeps people out of the hospital not so much.

Interestingly it would quite likely have the opposite effect. Adderall is fairly focused on the executive functioning areas of the brain. If you are dependent on it, and it’s suddenly taken away, then you’ll recoil. The Executive functions help regulate decision making and focus control. Under activity in the executive functioning leads to impulsive behaviour similar to the base symptoms of ADHD.
