My buddy’s account got compromised because his kid fell for some kind of Minecraft scam. It was his 365 account that he pays for and Microsoft has told him to pound sand. He’s grateful that he doesn’t use one drive and uses a local login on windows. He’s not even the only person that I know that had this happen to them.

The psychology term is “locus of control”. It’s used to describe how much control a person has over their life, with an internal locus of control more associated with taking personal responsibility. Like “I see a mountain, I’m going to climb it” versus an external locus such as “I can never get ahead at work because my boss is mean to me, it doesn’t matter what I do”.

Since the article says smartphone addiction triggers a chemical response similar to drug addiction, it’s helpful to look at addiction resources for some answers to your question. As fyi, the reason you’re getting downvoted use because it could be perceived that you lack empathy for others who can’t control themselves but based on your question and other comments, it seems like you’re actually just curious about the topic.

When you asked “who’s in charge”, it was insightful because a number of articles about addiction ask that same question. Eg:

Watch: Adobe angers artists with new Photoshop terms (techcrunch.com)

Artists got an unpleasant surprise when they opened Photoshop this week, as they were shown a pop-up window asking them to agree to new terms of service. Among the changes: Adobe now says it has the right to access customers’ content through “automated or manual methods.”...

The biggest problem GIMP has is the name. We need activists to decry the name as ableist or something. I’m sure it was a hilarious joke at the time, but anyone who had seen Pulp Fiction has a pretty strong mental image when they hear the name. They ought to just drop the P and call it GIM. Then it can be a fun play off GIF. Is it pronounce Ghim or Jim?

olympicyes ,

I have you beat then! My first experience with Photoshop was either 2 or 2.5 on my Mac IIci in 1992-93. All that means is that I’m likely older than you. We bought the Mac to run pagemaker after a failed attempt to use it on Windows 3. I started using Illustrator around the same time. I still use it, but mostly I’m throwing my money away on CC because I don’t have the skill necessary to care about AI stealing my work.

Southern Baptists are poised to ban churches with women pastors. Some are urging them to reconsider (apnews.com)

From its towering white steeple and red-brick facade to its Sunday services filled with rousing gospel hymns and evangelistic sermons, First Baptist Church of Alexandria, Virginia, bears many of the classic hallmarks of a Southern Baptist church....

olympicyes ,

I believe that is a convention center for their meeting.

olympicyes ,

They already expelled Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church for having women pastors.

olympicyes ,

Publicly-owned like the school district?

olympicyes ,

The article references family, domestic violence, employers, and fraudsters but doesn’t really focus on legal liability.

olympicyes ,

The paper was from 1985. Was the CIA correct?

You can use Whisky which is a convenient wrapper for WINE to run the Windows version of Steam. Simple games like Dredge work flawlessly on my M1 but anything used for benchmarking FPS is unacceptably slow. Translation of Intel code is the biggest issue. I assume Asahi has the same limitations as Mac OS but it is impressive what they’ve been able to do.

olympicyes ,

Sorry I was very unclear. Whisky is an app for MacOS. I’ve used Steam on Ubuntu as well and it works OK but sometimes is a pain to find a version of proton that works for a given game.

CEO of Google Says It Has No Solution for Its AI Providing Wildly Incorrect Information (futurism.com)

You know how Google’s new feature called AI Overviews is prone to spitting out wildly incorrect answers to search queries? In one instance, AI Overviews told a user to use glue on pizza to make sure the cheese won’t slide off (pssst…please don’t do this.)...

George Lucas shouldn’t get so much shit for this. Disney should. John Boyega’s character Finn got sidelined in the sequel sequels partly because of the concern that the movie wouldn’t do well overseas. He was removed entirely from the movie posters for Force Awakens in China.

Newish user migrating to Linux

I have been using Arch Linux with i3wm for around 5 years for work, on my ThinkPad. I am fairly comfortable with pacman and setting up a distro. I have previously tried Mint, Manjaro, KDE Neon, Elementary, and MX Linux, all for the same use case (Work: where I need a browser, Slack, and a MongoDB GUI)....

olympicyes ,

I use Ubuntu but the arch wiki is great for this. Research VFIO via QEMU/KVM. You can pass through your GPU. Check into either adding a second GPU (I use AMD for the host and Nvidia for the guest), or single gpu passthrough. Wendell from Level1Techs on YouTube is a great resource as well as the VFIO subreddit.

I don’t think your hardware is probably good enough since your cpu is 4 core 8 thread which is cutting it tight. Some AMD cards gave a pci reset bug which means you can use it in a vm but the card won’t be released when the session is over. New AMD cards aren’t affected, but not sure on 570.

Overall bare metal vm costs more to implement but makes it way easier to never dual boot.

My personal recommendation would be to dual boot for now but to buy Intel or an AMD APU for your next machine and get an Nvidia card (Rtx 2000 series or better) for the vm. Run Linux off the integrated graphics. That’s just me.

I personally have Threadripper and it works great. Mostly use it for Adobe. I’m able to give it 16 core/32 thread, 32 gb ram, and it screams. Next step is to get a dedicated NVMe.

Good luck.

olympicyes ,

Right now it’s sort of up to Nvidia and Wayland. Desktop sound is in good shape, desktop color (profiles and matching) and fonts are not there yet. Ray tracing and hdr have proven how much of a second class citizen desktop Linux is, so right now the most important factor is the SteamDeck for pushing the envelope to implement new tech. Chinese and German goverments moving to Linux helps but to be honet, I think that the “office and browser” use case is pretty well covered.

What is the bridge jumping bit about?

olympicyes ,

I scrolled his IG and he hasn’t posted anything new in a while but he certainly doesn’t look like he was 360 in any of his photos. One could speculate it was a recent weight gain. He also hasn’t posted any new videos of his singing on YouTube in a couple years. I can personally empathize with how he might have felt being excluded but don’t have a lot of sympathy for his lawsuit. Servers at a party are expected to blend into the background but being both big and tall probably attracts too much attention.

olympicyes , (edited )

Well he certainly wouldn’t cheer anybody up at the party in either case. I’d put money on this case getting bounced as soon as a judge has anything to do with it.

ETA: I hope he’s okay.

Smoking is so much more prevalent in other states than it is in California. Even vaping has been dropping off recently. California overall has less binge drinking than other states but I’d attribute that as much to good weather and lots to do instead of just taxes.

olympicyes ,

Facebook is a cookbook! It was there in the name the whole time!!!

olympicyes ,

Dumb phones don’t help you for tickets, boarding passes, tap to pay, etc. those things require strong security, not the latest tech. I’ve got a few teenage kids and even for them it’s not very practical to exist without a smartphone.

olympicyes ,

I’d suggest editing these scripts with a tool like VS Code so you can remember exactly what you did.

olympicyes ,

I’d generalize it as Reddit was for people who read the article, and Digg was for people who didn’t. There were other sites for different communities at the time as well like the Chive and their Bill Murray worship.

olympicyes ,

I gave away something on Reddit recently and found out that DMs aren’t the same between new and old Reddit. I got a reply on old Reddit and thought was the only interested person and latter logging in on a different browser found more messages that I didn’t see on old. The messages from old didn’t show up on the new site as well. What a mess.

olympicyes ,

I’m not mad about the scraping. The linkedin scraping case pretty much cemented that there was nothing that could be done to stop it. I’m just mad that I can no longer use the app of my choice. No such problem with Lemmy.

olympicyes ,

You don’t want people jumping in front of a train, but what do you think would happen if this concept were fully embraced by the American for-profit insurance industry? I’m imagining taking my mom to a doctor’s appointment for an expensive treatment and finding tasteful brochures for dying with dignity helpfully placed around the office.

USA Light Truck definition: Firstly, the vehicle must have a gross vehicle weight–that’s the curb weight plus payload–of no more than 8,500 lbs. Secondly, it has to be designed to transport persons, property, or be fitted with special features allowing its “off-street or off-highway operation and use”.

If you want to be mad about something relevant, be mad that Windows 10/11 use deflate64 for zipping very large file. By default, deflate64 is not compatible with Python ZipFile nor Gnome’s built in unarchiver app.

Nixon also resigned. There was no chance of him coming back but it didn’t do anything to convince conservatives in the 70s. The movie Dick is a great primer on how Nixon’s resignation radicalized Republicans.

He thought Mike Patton was biting his style! I recently watched the video for Epic and I can kind of see what Kiedis is saying but honestly RHCP never had a hit like Epic before it was released. Mother’s Milk was released a few months later.

olympicyes ,

I honestly think their version is not as good as Toto’s. Their cover closely matches the style of the original and they aren’t as good musicians. I was hoping they would make it a Weezer style cover. Toto’s version of Hash Pipe is better than Weezer’s too.

The tickets for the upcoming Trophy Eyes show in LA are $20.

What did you hear? I just played a few tracks and it sounds like screamo to me.

iPad Pro with M4 chip boasts impressive performance jump compared to just-released M3 MacBook Air (9to5mac.com)

On raw performance might, the M4 really does live up to Apple’s promises, should deliver. Single core is up about 20% compared to all M3 chips and more than 40% compared to M2. The generational computational leap from the previous M2 iPad Pro is at least a 42% jump on single-core and multi-core.

olympicyes ,

I’ve got a high end Intel MacBook Pro and a low end M1 Mac Mini. The Mac Mini runs x86 apps live Civ 6 faster and smoother than the Intel MacBook can.

Sam Altman gives a pretty good indication that your point is correct when he began asking for $7 trillion for new AI chip development.

If the Stack Overflow site remains available then it still serves the same purpose it did before. I personally use ad blockers and don’t pay to use the site, which must not be cheap to operate. The bigger problem is if talented people refuse to share their expertise with people like me because they aren’t being compensated for their efforts.

olympicyes ,

Great idea. Then I’ll turn to ChatGPT for higher quality answers.

olympicyes ,

Not to mention that even if everyone were to switch to public transportation, you’ve still got the issue of RFID cards that track every trip you take on the system. Far cry from subway tokens for privacy concerns.

olympicyes ,

The train from LA to Vegas is under construction. The problem in Vegas is that the casinos don’t want you leaving their property unless you’re headed to another property they also own. Musk’s tunnel just goes to the convention center and is obviously not a serious solution.

olympicyes ,

Sounds like they are using it to reduce the size of the battery.

olympicyes ,

I wouldn’t use asahi Linux on a Mac but it would be amazing on a iPad.

olympicyes ,

They would only ask that in a religious troop. There are plenty of troops charted by secular organizations that won’t ask about that.

olympicyes ,

What would make you trustful?

The inventor is balding, so you might be right!
