So you want the trains to coast from station to station? Do you really believe that or is it very important for you to be right?

olympicyes ,

The wiki page for the prison is pretty interesting. Quite the rogues gallery of convicts who have had a stay there!

olympicyes ,

I started looking up other federal prisons. There is one at Terminal Island in the Port of Los Angeles that had such a reputation as Club Fed that they had to add barbed wire and armed guards in the 80s for PR purposes. Al Capone had a stay there.

VFIO GPU Passthrough for Premiere is a must. While not trivial to set up, it’s not too bad if you know what to do. It took me some trial and error but didn’t spend too much time on it. Main issue is making sure your PC has enough PCIe lanes.

ETA: look into LookingGlass for capturing the framebuffer from a GPU accelerated VM into your Linux host. I haven’t tried getting this to work personally but I have used Moonlight which adapts Nvidia game streaming tech for your desktop apps.

To me this falls more under the category of non profit independent news, primarily local news where all the corruption happens. Report for America, reportforamerica.org, assists these local newsrooms and has a spot on their site that you can search for sites local to you. These local papers are interesting because their individual sponsors are often influential people in your community who believe in democracy and are concerned about the power of corporate media. I just checked out our local online paper like this and see the same names that I recognize for people I know who support the arts.

olympicyes ,

Instead of Zuck vs Musk, maybe we ought to see Kelce vs Musk. That is offensive in so many ways.

olympicyes ,

And alfalfa for Saudi Arabia.

Corporate kommisar copy and pasted directly from the article.

I was going to refute your comment but to be honest I use it largely because of those features. I’ve used MacOS for over 30 years and recently bought an AMD workstation for development work when my MacBook didn’t cut it anymore. It would be a good experiment to try an all local MacOS experience to see how it stacks up and I think it would probably be ok. You can install a lot of desktop apps using Brew to keep your system up to date. The main advantage that Mac has over Linux is that a lot of corporate software is available that otherwise can only be obtained on Windows. When I realized that windows in a VM on Linux wasn’t for me I more or less converted my Linux machine to a server for most use cases.

olympicyes ,

Steve Jobs said taking a calligraphy class was the reason that having a wide variety of attractive fonts was important to him when designing the Mac.

olympicyes ,

Let’s be honest. Any social norms about when drinking is socially acceptable go out the window at airports. It’s been that way as long as I can remember. But Ryan Air/Spirit/frontier passengers all kind of self select for having a miserable experience so I don’t blame them for trying to numb the pain.

olympicyes ,

He’s saying that “pioneers take the arrows, and the settlers take the land”.

Haiku makes him feel like a pioneer again, and it sounds like the tinkering is fun.

Based on your comment, it is highly unlikely that you would have used Linux desktop in the late 90s for the same reason you wouldn’t use Haiku today. A lot of people feel out on computers, if it was just about doing work then the vintage computer hobbyists would all find something else to do.

olympicyes ,

Honestly this might be useful to the home user but everyone is right to be skeptical. The bigger value for the software is corporate surveillance. They will be able to see exactly how much time WFH workers are actually working and will probably want it for exfiltration prevention. The target user might not be able to avoid using it no matter what.

olympicyes ,

The Founding Fathers could not have anticipated that honor and shame would be totally foreign concepts to a sitting president and congress. In the 1790s for example, pistol duels were the leading cause of death for US navy midshipmen.

olympicyes ,

More importantly, maybe grandma doesn’t want to raise your kid? My mom was helpful as long as she felt like it. My mother in law moved away so she didn’t have to feel guilty telling her kids she didn’t want to be a free babysitter anymore. When my kids were small I was annoyed, but as I get and feel older, I much better understand it.

olympicyes ,

It’s from the 12th amendment. A state elector must vote for at least one candidate from a state other than their own. So electors from Nevada could place both their Presidential and Vice Presidential electoral votes with an all-California ticket but California electors may not. There was talk of Kamala picking Newsom for VP but she’d have to change her residency for that to happen. Everyone would know that would be BS and possibly cost her California’s electoral votes or her candidacy in the second state, so she picked Walz instead (not the only reason but you get the idea). Kennedy got caught pulling a fast one so here we are.

olympicyes ,

You also don’t have to use the Patreon iOS app. Most people just use the services and don’t search for alternatives. If you’re on Lemmy then you’re not in the “most people” category by default.

I don’t allow my TVs to touch the internet. I hadn’t realized how much they phone home until disabling upnp on my router locked the tv up and I couldn’t navigate the Home Screen without a terrible delay. The telemetry collection is out of control and they fingerprint everything you watch from a connected device. No thanks.

olympicyes ,

I use Ubuntu but the Arch wiki is top notch and has helped me solved a lot of problems, especially technical issues like VFIO. I think you’re right that Arch love largely started as a meme to celebrate getting it installed, kind of like the jokes about being unable to exit VIM.

olympicyes ,

It’s probably 95% of windows users then who are affected by this.

olympicyes ,

Along the same lines as the Transcend card is Blue SCSI which is a little raspberry pi based SSD for vintage Macs that lets you FTP into the drive from a modern machine for file transfer.

olympicyes ,

Wow OS/2! Windows 3.1 was awful but Windows 95 being so polished must have made you mad! Villain origin story material. My timeline was a more boring Apple II > Motorola Mac > Power PC Mac > Intel Mac > AMD Ubuntu > M1 Mac. AMA.

olympicyes ,

I think Windows 10 is the best version they ever made but Windows 11 is a total fraud. So many elements are just wallpaper on top of old underpinnings, fake it til you make it but also less utility while being no more useful. I prefer Gnome to Win 11.

olympicyes ,

I like pickleball. It’s fun but best understood as human sized ping pong instead of mini-tennis. Imagine the table tennis sound a lot louder. I could imagine ignoring the sound if you like the sport but it grating on you otherwise.

Linux back at 4.04% on the Desktop. Windows went below 73% (gs.statcounter.com)

It peaked at 4.05% in March. The last 2 months it went just below 4% as the Unknown category increased. For June the reverse happened, so 4.04% seems to be the real current share of Linux on Desktop as desktop clients were read properly/werent spoofed.

olympicyes ,

You can tell from the neofetch screenshots of their VMs showing weird configurations like 3 cores and 6 GB RAM with 15 minutes uptime.

olympicyes ,

Yes. Probably VirtualBox.

olympicyes ,

You think it is the most used because it is the most used? There must be a reason for that!

olympicyes ,

Always does but some implementations are better than others and bills still need to get paid. Network TV can’t force you to watch ads before beginning your program, but streaming can. I’m irritated that Prime has ads even though I pay for it but at least the way they handle them (only before the program starts) is acceptable to me. Interrupting a program to show ads the way YouTube does is horrible customer experience. What’s crazy to me is the way network tv shows have gone from 22 minutes in a 30 minute block to 17-19 minutes.

olympicyes ,

Maybe the vid angel people can get on that.

olympicyes ,

I’m using Voyager and it’s great. I don’t even use the app, I prefer the PWA.

olympicyes ,

A friend of mine moved to LA from Germany to work for his German company. German was an option for the test at the DMV. He said the test was gibberish so he turned it in for an English test.

I think most people in the market for an EV know that all the manufacturers are changing the charging port to the Tesla NACS standard next year. Range anxiety is still the biggest issue for EV adoption and the supercharger network is the only practical option right now. Tesla hasn’t innovated in a while and current Tesla owners are put off by Musk’s antics. I’d personally wait a year to see what the options are.

olympicyes ,

True enough to get the industry in North America to move off vanilla ccs.

My buddy’s account got compromised because his kid fell for some kind of Minecraft scam. It was his 365 account that he pays for and Microsoft has told him to pound sand. He’s grateful that he doesn’t use one drive and uses a local login on windows. He’s not even the only person that I know that had this happen to them.

The psychology term is “locus of control”. It’s used to describe how much control a person has over their life, with an internal locus of control more associated with taking personal responsibility. Like “I see a mountain, I’m going to climb it” versus an external locus such as “I can never get ahead at work because my boss is mean to me, it doesn’t matter what I do”.

Since the article says smartphone addiction triggers a chemical response similar to drug addiction, it’s helpful to look at addiction resources for some answers to your question. As fyi, the reason you’re getting downvoted use because it could be perceived that you lack empathy for others who can’t control themselves but based on your question and other comments, it seems like you’re actually just curious about the topic.

When you asked “who’s in charge”, it was insightful because a number of articles about addiction ask that same question. Eg:

recovery.org/…/whos-in-charge-you-or-your-addicti…

Watch: Adobe angers artists with new Photoshop terms (techcrunch.com)

Artists got an unpleasant surprise when they opened Photoshop this week, as they were shown a pop-up window asking them to agree to new terms of service. Among the changes: Adobe now says it has the right to access customers’ content through “automated or manual methods.”...

The biggest problem GIMP has is the name. We need activists to decry the name as ableist or something. I’m sure it was a hilarious joke at the time, but anyone who had seen Pulp Fiction has a pretty strong mental image when they hear the name. They ought to just drop the P and call it GIM. Then it can be a fun play off GIF. Is it pronounce Ghim or Jim?

olympicyes ,

I have you beat then! My first experience with Photoshop was either 2 or 2.5 on my Mac IIci in 1992-93. All that means is that I’m likely older than you. We bought the Mac to run pagemaker after a failed attempt to use it on Windows 3. I started using Illustrator around the same time. I still use it, but mostly I’m throwing my money away on CC because I don’t have the skill necessary to care about AI stealing my work.

Southern Baptists are poised to ban churches with women pastors. Some are urging them to reconsider (apnews.com)

From its towering white steeple and red-brick facade to its Sunday services filled with rousing gospel hymns and evangelistic sermons, First Baptist Church of Alexandria, Virginia, bears many of the classic hallmarks of a Southern Baptist church....

olympicyes ,

I believe that is a convention center for their meeting.

olympicyes ,

They already expelled Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church for having women pastors.

olympicyes ,

Publicly-owned like the school district?

olympicyes ,

The article references family, domestic violence, employers, and fraudsters but doesn’t really focus on legal liability.

olympicyes ,

The paper was from 1985. Was the CIA correct?

You can use Whisky which is a convenient wrapper for WINE to run the Windows version of Steam. Simple games like Dredge work flawlessly on my M1 but anything used for benchmarking FPS is unacceptably slow. Translation of Intel code is the biggest issue. I assume Asahi has the same limitations as Mac OS but it is impressive what they’ve been able to do.

olympicyes ,

Sorry I was very unclear. Whisky is an app for MacOS. I’ve used Steam on Ubuntu as well and it works OK but sometimes is a pain to find a version of proton that works for a given game.

CEO of Google Says It Has No Solution for Its AI Providing Wildly Incorrect Information (futurism.com)

You know how Google’s new feature called AI Overviews is prone to spitting out wildly incorrect answers to search queries? In one instance, AI Overviews told a user to use glue on pizza to make sure the cheese won’t slide off (pssst…please don’t do this.)...
