NMeneses , in ‘We’ve all broken the Ten Commandments’: The evangelicals still backing Trump

The evangelicals are the fastest spreading radical and partisan cultists in the world. And what startles me is that these dimwits are dumbfounding us all.

zzz711 , in Appeals court finds 'Obamacare' pillar unconstitutional in suit over HIV-prevention drug

I am shocked that the 5th circuit would rule this way. Completely and utterly shocked.

TheOneWithTheHair , in Someone apparently hacked 50 Cent’s accounts to peddle a memecoin and made off with millions
@TheOneWithTheHair@lemmy.world avatar

They literally turned 50cent into millions.

But not everyone speedruns them.

Zorsith , in DeSantis vetoes all arts grants in Florida
@Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Uhhh, isn’t “the arts” (namely Disney and Universal) like, the main money maker of Florida? Not a lot of reasons to go there beyond that, beaches, and the fact that it doesn’t snow.

Vorticity ,

Well, DeSantis has been waging war on the mouse for a while, though he does seem to be backing down some.

gedaliyah , in ‘News deserts’: if local newspapers are dying, will local democracy die with them?
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

It’s very worrisome and probably deserves a new model. Newspapers are a public good, so maybe they should be funded by the public like schools and libraries.

jimmy90 ,

the internet should be able to provide all information on what your local government is doing and should provide a local forum to discuss and share information about what is happening in your community

i also think there should be a way of verifying that you live locally, so you can only contribute if you have a id posted to you, like an election card. i don’t think this identity should give away you real name and address, just verify that you are real and local

umbrella ,
@umbrella@lemmy.ml avatar

but it doesnt

WanderingVentra ,

I mean, someone has to find out what your local community is doing and write it up on the internet. That’s what reporters do, and they need to get paid for it somehow.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Local issues are much more than just local government. News also plays a vital role in accountability and exposing corruption

tacosanonymous , in Someone apparently hacked 50 Cent’s accounts to peddle a memecoin and made off with millions

I’m suppressing a chuckle.

greenskye , in The United States will need 7 million migrants to cover old age support programs for baby boomers

Am I crazy or does that not even sound like much? I’m not even sure if I’d notice 7 million immigrants coming into the country, at least if they were relatively spread out. The US is big and we already have lots of different types of people.

intensely_human , in Journalist shot by Minneapolis police during 2020 protests dying from injuries

It’s amazing that she’s found a way to stay involved in the community, and inject that cash into all the little places that it helps by going around and getting to know everyone and what they need.

TheBat , in A heat wave is bringing searing temperatures to New York and the I-95 corridor. Washington DC has hit 100 degrees
@TheBat@lemmy.world avatar

Time to expand Central Park… all the way to Washington DC.

mrgreyeyes ,

With this pace it will be the central desert.

Snapz , in A heat wave is bringing searing temperatures to New York and the I-95 corridor. Washington DC has hit 100 degrees

There should be no air conditioning in the white house, congress, senate and supreme court - those assholes should have to experience their work first hand and full temperature.

Beaver , in DeSantis vetoes all arts grants in Florida

FlyingSquid ,

Sure he does. It’s drinking a warm can of Bud at a Lee Greenwood concert.

PythagreousTitties ,

It’s Bud woke or something? Or did they move on from that already?

FlyingSquid ,

They offered an apology for daring to do a small barely publicized promotion with a queer person and then did a partnership with UFC, so they love the all-American company owned by the Belgians again.

jjjalljs ,

“When I hear the word culture, I reach for my gun”

Seems that’s a slight mangling of the line, but it’s a common Nazi trope

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanns_Johst

Valmond , (edited )

Was it Goering?

Edit: it was not, see below.

jjjalljs ,

The first paragraph on the wikipedia page linked says

"The statement “When I hear the word culture, I reach for my gun”, variously misattributed to Heinrich Himmler, Joseph Goebbels and Hermann Göring, was in fact a corrupted version of a line in his play Schlageter. "

So no, I don’t think so.

Delonix ,

Culture cuts through their slimey veneer

Got_Bent ,

Whoa there pal.

What part of driving pickup trucks with giant tires through the mud while drinking cases of ~~bud light ~~ Modelo and wearing jorts and a tank top with a picture of Rambo Trump firing footballs from a grenade launcher isn’t culture?

fine_sandy_bottom ,

It’s not that.

The Left: People who like art

lolcatnip ,

Look at how art fared in Nazi Germany.

UnderpantsWeevil ,
@UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world avatar

I mean, you can scratch that up more to the war time economy than anything.

If all your young artistic talent is getting methed up, loaded into APCs, and driven into the thick of Russian winter, they’ll have less time to make art at home.

I might argue that the biggest thing we’ve done for the arts in the United States is to eliminate the draft. Now you can have a professional artistic community AND a professional military. Then they can come together to make the next Top Gun or Transformers or Marvel movie.

ASeriesOfPoorChoices ,

I’m pretty sure this is all related to Hitler’s failing out of art school.

Delonix ,

Culture hates meatbal ron

sirboozebum OP , in Israeli soldiers who drove with wounded Palestinian tied to their vehicle 'violated orders', military says

Most moral army in the world, guys.

Keeponstalin ,

Maeve , in Pastor Robert Morris tried to scare his sex abuse victim with threat of prosecution
