I ate at McDonald’s for the first time in a few years. The same meal I used to get on the go now costs over 100% more since before 2020. The only reason I went to McDonald’s was because it was cheap, not because it was good. I don’t think I’ll ever go again.

Anticorp ,

It costs more than a sit down meal! My wife got Carl’s Junior a couple days ago and it was $22! So if I had got a meal it would have been $44. For fucking Carl’s Junior? Are you kidding me? Get the fuck outta here!

Varyk , (edited )

I was traveling for several years and when I visited the states again I thought it would be fun to go through a Wendy’s. I was charged 4.50 for a plain hamburger, and I was shocked and assumed she entered the order wrong, and asked the fast food worker why the price was so high and if it was that high all the time.

She was so bummed out and told me she couldn’t even eat fast food except for the fries she got on her shift because the prices were so crazy now. That’s about the last time I stopped by any fast food places in the states.

I’ve been traveling again and I’m in Taiwan right now, a stacked buffet plate is about 4 bucks and the vegetarian pay by the plate place I’m at now are 2 bucks a full plate.

Haha ,

I understand what you mean, however it would be a better data to compare fast food prices for the same country. Its normal that the prices in the US dont match yours. Its not the exact same economy… how was fast food in taiwan before vs now? That is more interesting information

Varyk ,

My anecdote is about prices in a single country skyrocketing, I think you only find that particular country’s data less interesting because it’s a country you’re familiar with.

I do have more international data points for you, though.

All the American fast food joints keep their prices pretty consistent across countries I’ve been to in any year, within ten percent or so of conversion rates anyway.

As for local fare in Taiwan, inflation is blowing up here. prices in general here seem about 50% higher than 5 years ago.

China’s prices have all doubled since ten years ago, except for housing, which is slightly cheaper(evergrande). Not that they were ever expensive.

rottingleaf ,

I actually love imagining ways in which one can build a digital library in its core meaning.

A system reliable enough to survive centuries and maybe millennia, many times redundant and verifiable and self-repairing, allowing exhaustive search.

This fascination is maybe the reason I love systems intended for “piracy”. Because frankly paying for media is not such a big deal - I download things not too often and most of the time download things I’ve downloaded before. I even have a few bought games in Steam which I haven’t played.

But I love to feel that there’s no company, no organization behind that exchange.

Getting back to libraries - in early 00s people would think of the Web like of a layer upon which such a thing can be built. It turns out that this didn’t work, but let’s please don’t stop with the optimism, and let’s please discard the approach which hasn’t worked instead of clinging to it.

It couldn’t possibly be you’re the one actually acting that way

sukhmel ,

I don’t know much about the club and was not expressing my opinion on them (because I have none). I just guessed what whas is the reason someone picked on them

MrFunnyMoustache ,

They care more about appearing smart to others to feel better about themselves, seems like low wisdom to me. High wisdom is realising that all that posturing makes no sense.

The way I see it, they are no different from people who spend money to show off and appear even richer than they actually are; posting pictures of themselves in fancy card, private jets, and other things like that. There are many deca-millionaires and billionaires who buy bigger and bigger yachts and jets for that posturing, even modifying their yacht to be longer so it will be registered as a longer yacht even though it’s the same useable space…

IQ test isn’t nearly as valuable as they make it to be in reality, and I guarantee that many of that club’s members prepared and trained specifically for that test, which makes them appear smarter than they actually are to the people who care about IQ scores. Moreover, this gives them the incentive to believe that IQ scores matter a lot more, because it inflates their self-worth.

pinkdrunkenelephants ,

Nah. You automatically made huge assumptions about the people who joined that group with no understanding of who they are or what they actually stand for because you never researched it or even cared to Google it. And you did that because you, as an anti-intellectual, are one of those people who talk shit about people more intelligent than you to make yourself sound smart.

Did you know 12% of them are Zoomers, for instance? As in teens? Did you even consider some of them would be kids or teens or did that just slip your mind in the middle of you taking out your anger, jealousy and inadequacies on them?

But as usual, as some dumbass anti-intellectualist bigot, you project your own flaws and failings onto a group you want to marginalize to make yourself feel better.

Shut the fuck up and go crack open a book, you worthless, arrogant, vapid, vicious little clod.

CanadianCarl ,

Imgonnatrythis ,

Well you could work at the inspection center and do that if they fail to pass muster (for safety).

NewNewAccount ,

LED headlights are not the problem. LEDs in reflector housings and/or idiots driving with their brights on is the problem.

Either way the problem is idiot car owners, not technology.

CaptainPedantic ,

For the most part, I agree. LEDs are not the problem. The problem is either moronic drivers, or poor implementation of LED lights. As a driver of a very low car, the vast majority of my complaints about bright lights boils down to lifted trucks with ridiculous light bars, LEDs bulbs in halogen housings, or dufoids driving with their highbeams on. It doesn’t matter if the highbeams are halogen or LED, they’re both blinding.

That being said, there are cars with LED headlights that are blinding from the factory:

  • 2023+ Subaru Outback.
  • Jeep Wrangler/Gladiator (compounded by having a factory or aftermarket lift)
  • Hyundai Palisade

Then there are the cars that are designed by morons that have all instruments in the center console. That makes it harder for drivers to see when their LED highbeams are on:

  • Toyota Prius
  • Tesla Model 3/Y

But there are plenty of cars with LED headlights that I don’t have any issues with. In my experience, Mercedes and Audi seem to do a particularly good job of having bright lights for the driver without blinding anyone else.

And there are plenty of other cars with halogen headlights that are blinding from the factory too:

  • Ford F-Series trucks with quad halogen headlamps
  • Dodge trucks
  • Chevy Cruze (or some other small to midsize American sedan, I can’t tell)

The luddites who want to strap jam jars with glowworms in them to the front of new cars are being ridiculous. Properly aimed LEDs are so much safer.

When I got my new car with LED headlights, I couldn’t believe how much more I could see. I could see fae down the road. Retroreflectors on lane markings far beyond the reach of my beams are visible. Pedestrians running across the street against the light wearing all black (true story) are visible! Despite clear lenses, new bulbs, and being correctly aimed, the halogen lights in my old Civic barely reached 100 feet down the road. My other halogen bulbed vehicle is better, but it’s still a far cry from what I’m used to now.

NewNewAccount ,

The luddites who want to strap jam jars with glowworms in them to the front of new cars are being ridiculous.

Lmao. Well said.

Part of it is how large trucks and SUVs are. The standard is that they have to point down a certain angle, but when you are that tall that is not enough.

They do that here. Except too bright isn’t seen as a fault.

notapantsday ,

We do in Germany, every two years. It’s not helping and I don’t know why. Maybe people are aligning their headlights correctly just for the test. Or the test is garbage. Next time my car is due, I’ll ask the guy.

There is a huge difference though when it comes to the intensity of headlights in the US vs Germany. Some cars in the US will light up the inside of your own car simply by driving behind you.

I don’t know if it’s the same stat buffs/debuffs across all the Elder Scrolls games, but the one OP was likely talking about was the Redguard race in Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (stat sheet here). And yes, it was pretty messed up.

DragonTypeWyvern ,

Oh, it gets better.

They’re not the same species as the Nordic humans.

Siegfried , (edited )

The “whites” in this game are the imperial, nordic have the same debuffs in willpower and intelligence.

Edit, with the exceptions of nordic women…

For some reason the race distinction doesn’t bother me as much as the gender one. What the fuck

cro_magnon_gilf ,

Yeah the sex ones are more odd… When you chose race and sex I think they don’ give you the stats at all, they just mention in text what a race is better at. They don’t mention there being gender differences or those differences differing between races at all.

I feel a bit cheated tbh

AccountMaker ,

Redguards are from Yokuda, Nords are from Atmora, Imperials come from the Nedes and Bretons are a Nede/Aldmer mix. Each human race has a distinct origin, what’s controversial about that? They’re ‘human’ in the sense that they’re not Mer or Beastfolk.

DragonTypeWyvern ,

Idk bro, you think that, maybe, in a creationist setting, that means the “races” don’t have a common ancestor?

Gabu ,

My brother, read the fucking lore. Atmorans (Nords) are the fallen gods who followed Shor. Elves are the fallen gods who followed Auri-El. Redguards come from a different Kalpa (rebirth cycle).

DragonTypeWyvern ,

Aka

Are a different species

Dumbass

But I’ll give Bethesda credit, as others have noted the Nords have basically the same stats, so it’s more a bad look/Romabooism than a white supremacy thing.

Gabu ,

Aka Are a different species

A.K.A. a different race, as per Tolkienian storytelling and myth-building

Gabu ,

DragonTypeWyvern ,

Thanks for admitting I’m right

Gabu ,

Are you dumb?

DragonTypeWyvern ,

No u

AccountMaker ,

But Nords have identical buffs/debuffs according to that sheet.

barsoap ,

The males, yes. Redguard women are subbier, more dazzling, and have more stamina than Nord women. Good base race for a skill over brawn fighter, see Syrio Forel, no points wasted on pointless magic capabilities. Also fun side observation: Female orcs are just as strong as the males but smarter and have, singular among all races, less charisma than the males. Also the lowest overall.

You kinda have to try hard to be offended by the thing. I guess though the differences between human races shouldn’t be as pronounced (modulo Bretons with all their Aldmer blood) but I guess every race needs its 50 stat. Oh and imperials being the smarmy ones makes sense.

There’s nothing wrong with browsing your social media whereever that be Facebook or Instagram or messageboards like lemmy reddit or 4chan just as long as it’s not impacting your life. Could be a good way to catch up on friends and pass the time. Although “social media detoxing” can be really good for your mental health

Good god, I sure hope so.

    ComradeR ,

Internet in general is becoming boring and tedious. Don’t know if it’s because of my age (Started to use internet when I was 13yo now I’m 31) but the internet isn’t that exciting and curiosity inducing place to me.

    ALostInquirer ,

Have you continued exploring, or found yourself settling in more?

For me any place stagnates when I start settling into it, so I try to find a new angle, a new question to ask of it, and eventually something gives way to something exciting and fascinating that was right around the corner the whole time.

    ComradeR ,

I continued exploring it. But, aside of one or other interesting sites that catch my attention for long periods of time (e.g. TvTropes), I can’t find internet amusing as I used to do in my childhood/teens. Sometimes I pick a good site that keep me entertained while browsing CloudHiker, but isn’t the same thing anymore.

This ain’t a problem with the internet, it’s just because you’re getting older and you’ve seen more things.
