I havent run opensuse much as a server but am always looking at it and Arch.

Probably going to switch to Arch eventually because the arch wiki is just the best docs I’ve found.

If you’re not relying on say a closed source driver that needs to compile for each kernel update you should have no issues there.

If you set up btrfs snapshots to run on updates then you could always just roll back if there’s a bad one. That’s how my arch laptop is set up.

Personally wouldn’t use Debian testing over arch or tumbleweed though. I think there’s something to be said for being on the same packages as the maintaners and not a testing version.

I use a VPN to stop work camps I stay at from knowing what porn I watch, to stop media companies from sending me copyright infringement notifications, and to stop public wifis from having as much info on me.

Its all about threat model. If you’re concerned with government actors then you need to be more secure than just a VPN.

My countries intelligence agency is not working with media companies like that. The cops and courts would eventually enforce some order against me if it ever went to court but more likely is my ISP just ditches me as a customer if I get too many strikes.

Also the ISP is the media company lots of the time, and its only a crime that will go to court and win if I made money distributing copyrighted material.

I don’t want my ISP to know much about what I’m doing either. They aren’t trustworthy, they often get caught illegally shaping traffic and such too.

What are you even proposing anyways? I am against government oppression and copyright law in general. All private property is theft from the commons. But in the meantime I will use a VPN because I trust Mullvad in Sweden more than I trust my own ISPs.

If I was committing crimes that were more serious then I would not use a VPN I would use a more robust security model.

My ISP is not powerless without government. They have massive power, they control 1/3rd of all cellular and internet communications. And like I said also control large amounts of satellite TV and cable broadcasting.

This hasn’t been my experience with friends with kids. They’re mostly babies and toddlers right now but I mean a kid can be supervised around a camp fire. And most kids are in bed at like 830 and then you can hang for a few hours of adult time. It seems to me that they get enough of their kids and are happy to talk about grown up shit for a while when I see them. And any of my friends who like sports have got their kids watching sports with them since they were tiny. Those kids know the hockey game is staying on.

Its a bit harder to hang out but honestly I find I see them as much as my child free friends. Its just hard to find mutual time off in general now that we all have jobs and live apart and shit.

It’ll be easier for them to get baby sitters when the kids are a bit more selfreliant when they’re a bit older too. But you do have to get some child free friends too, like not too many of my friends with kids are going to be hitting up too many music festivals with me for a while I reckon.

I’ve noticed a consistent decline in all skills in the last decade of new apprentices. It used to be that you’d get a “computer smart” kid or a “hand skills” kid, farm, shop class, etc. Now I typically see neither. My last apprentice had only ever used an iPhone and a Chromebook(what schools use now apparently) and an Xbox. So when I handed him my laptop to teach him how to configure some devices he got lost on the use of filling in an excel spreadsheet and saving and finding and opening the files. It would have been just as fast to have someone who’d never even seen a computer before. And he wasn’t able to lift very heavy things and had poor grip strength. Good kid, he’ll be ok but it could all be a lot easier for all of us.

I blame the school systems and the general trend of making all devices extremely consumer unfriendly. I used to tinker with all the aspects of the family computer as a kid, and my dad and his friends would regularly get together and work on their vehicles. Now every device is more appliance than tool. Anyways that’s my prematurely old man rant for the day.

Now, generations are a made up social construct. And I think most people would find they have more in common with working class boomers than they do with the rich their own age.

That said society changes very fast now. There are big differences in how 17 year olds now and 17 year olds 50 years ago were raised and socialised. And age is more than just a number. We’ll always discriminate against the young or the old in professional etc contexts because there’s just some jobs that are more suited to the young or that we don’t trust someone very young to have enough experience to do.

Also, I work trades and I’ll just say that from my point of view very few people are literate outside what they immediately need to navigate their lives. Its mainly the market share thing really. Using good default policies on windows or Linux would kill a lot of malware but typical Linux users still just copy paste shit into the command line and add random repositories etc anyways. And a program running with my privileges in my home directory would be 99% as bad as it running as root since my machines are really just me using them.

It’ll always be a problem for cracked software. But on Linux I find a good Free and open source alternative more readily than windows. I personally keep a good windows 10 VM around with snapshots for running software of dubious origins.

I have similar doubts about china and have always seen it as more state-capitalist than anything else. Simply because it seems to me that individual workers do not own the companies they work at. It seems to me that China has corporations structured almost exactly like our own in the west. Unless I’ve been misled and these massive Chinese corps really are co-ops with the workers having an equal say in the decisions of the company.

Oh I know that China has lifted lots of people out of poverty and is generally popular with the population. But they engage in massive censorship among other issues and I just can’t see how there can be a democracy (which I consider the most important component to make something socialist) with that degree of control. What I meant with China is it seems to me the state is the capitalists. The state has control over all the means of production in the country and I believe it uses it for its own benefit over the benefits and desires of the workers at those places.

I guess I’m just an anti-authoritarian first and my issue with capitalism has always been the authoritarian nature in which we parcel out resources and I can’t see bringing up China or northkorea as examples of what I want. Though I do often have to push back against liberal narratives especially about Vietnam and Cuba and China.

But I’m not a Marxist though I do think he had some good ideas and was skilled at inspiring class consciousness. Ive always been more inspired by anarchist philosphy and go by Libertarian-socialist if forced to pick a name. I just think that we’ve seen now that a dictatorship of the proletariat doesn’t go away and that you trade one state power for the other.

Nonsense. Alcohol is a carcinogen, every part of your body it touches has an increased risk of developing cancer. It is directly neurotoxic. It damages the liver and stomache. A bottle of it can kill you. Stopping taking it can kill you.

Weed taken orally is physically very safe. It can still be habit forming and there are other unwanted side effects but to act like it is physically comaparable to alcohol is silly.

I say there’s no safe amount of cocaine because it is directly cardiotoxic and has been known to cause heart defects in healthy young men at moderate doses.

I don’t think ant drug should be illegal I just think people should be aware of the dangers of substances so they can make an informed decision.

Running a plug to an apartment building parking lot properly would not neccesarily be cheap. I doubt a renter would be better off paying for that vs just running an efficient gas car. It only makes sense if you do it for the whole building at once at least then you get some economies of scale with bringing an electrician out and running wire through a parking lot.

Its not complicated but it wouldn’t be cheap to pay an electrician to properly install an outlet out to the parking lot. If you own the condo it would be worth it probably but paying out of pocket for a rental units infrastructure I don’t see paying off for the prospective electric car owner.

Its always way more work than people expect to “just install a new plug here” in an existing and finished place. I would say the solution here is to require rental property owners to start supplying outlets to parking lots.

Maybe I’m wrong. People should get a quote for getting it done if they’re interested. But I think it’ll be surprisingly pricy in most places.
