My grandpa died at 93 and would say, “people aren’t meant to live this long.” His wife is now 102, she doesn’t seem too pleased, but has her good days and bad. But she doesn’t remember the good days, so that sucks.

@lasagna@programming.dev avatar

Rather than losing my loved ones, I think I’d be more scared of losing my love for them. Either via a cold heart or dementia.

bob_wiley ,
@bob_wiley@lemmy.world avatar

When you put it like that, yeah, that’s how it’s going. My mom visits often (she has been told that my grandma gets more visits than most, and most don’t get any at all). However, because her mom either doesn’t remember, or doesn’t understand that everyone is trying to help and doing the best they can, she gets upset. She’ll often say how she doesn’t want to live where she’s at and asks why she can’t live with one of them. If people tell her something she doesn’t want to hear, she’ll hang up on them. She says she wants to go home, though I’m not sure where she thinks that is. Her sister took her in for a year or two, but it was too much. She ended up leaving in an ambulance after falling on her 100th birthday. Recently she told my sister she was happy when living at her house, which hurt to hear, but was also not entirely true. I think it’s been hard for everyone, but hardest on my mom… and my sister when she was living there.

I don’t think her heart is cold, it’s more the dementia stealing all the good times, hurting her ability to understand what’s going on, and her hearing making it difficult to communicate.

I want her to live forever, but if I’m being really honest, I think everyone will feel a weight off their shoulders when she does pass. We thought it was going to happen a few years ago after a bad fall. We were all at the hospital basically waiting for her to die, as she had a fractured spine and internal bleeding, but no one told her and she wanted to walk again and go home… and that’s exactly what she did. She’s tough as nails and I think she’s too stubborn to die, lol. It’s pretty crazy that a 102 year old lady who’s probably not even 5 feet tall and under 100lbs is the strongest person I’ve known, but it’s true.

WarmSoda ,

Dementia scares me too. I’ve seen it with two people now. It’s like they’re living in dreams all the time. Turn a corner or something changes and it’s a whole different scenario and you don’t know what’s going on.

I get night terrors. Some dreams seriously feel like they last for days and it’s next to impossible to wake up. Living like that 24/7 at the end of my life sounds horrifying.

FarFarAway ,

This. No one realizes that your probably not gonna make it to 100 in perfect health. If your body doesn’t go, it will be your mind. Either way, it does not sound appealing.

My back is killing me, the sciatica makes sitting down hard. My ankle is fucked from too many injuries doing shit like tough mudder because when you’re young you’re invincible. Top that off with an immune disorder and asthma and it’ll be a miracle if I make it to 50 with a good quality of life.

FarFarAway ,

Dude. Sciatica is the worst. Every once in a while I injure myself and can barely stand for days.

The only thing that helped was this old, Hispanic “healer man”, that massaged the nerve back into place. It’s not like woo woo healing and its not an actual massage. This man just knew anatomy really well and could feel everything out by touch alone. It took 15 mins and I was pain-free, although I had to go back a few times until it set. Hiking helped the muscles get strong enough to keep it in place.

I’ve gone to several other people that say they do similar things, including ones near the boarder, but they’ve never been able to fix it. Western Doctors were completely useless, they couldn’t even diagnose me properly. The next closest thing would probably be a sports massage therapist.

This man was apparently known far and wide, with people comming from other states to see him. Any one in my local hispanic community i mentioned it to, was familiar with him.

Sadly, he was old and stopped working his magic around the time covid started, due to him and his wife’s, unrelated, ailing health. I’ve been searching for someone else ever since. I’m sure there are others like him, there are definitely imitations. I have to assume someone else has excelled at this practice, and this old man wasnt just a one off.

If you have any contacts in the hispanic community, that may know of someone like him, I’d say it’s definitely worth a shot to at least ask around.

Ser_Salty ,

I don’t wanna get to the point where it seems miserable just to, like, walk or something. I don’t mind taking heart medication, walking with a cane, stuff like that, but I don’t wanna live in near constant agony just trying to get through the day.

thr0w4w4y2 ,

i don’t think there are any. priority is based on how much you think you could take rival vehicles in a fight.

Milk_Sheikh ,

Traffic lights make roundabouts pointless, unless they’re on a quick cycle used to ‘group’ cars entering a multi-lane roundabout.

If your population didn’t grow up with roundabouts though, and treats them like YOLO free for alls… then you might need lights

WanakaTree ,

My hometown installed roundabouts, with 4 way stop signs. Like, why.

psud ,

My town built lots of roundabouts, and the population are used to them, but they have a problem with unbalanced traffic, and it’s been growing, so traffic has been getting more unbalanced - more people coming from directions the engineers who planned the road didn’t expect

The real problem, of course, is that though they are trying they are not able to replace the traffic with mass transit. The buses get stuck in the same traffic, light rail seems impossible, even with political will

The three most important things, are

  1. A good wash, and optionally a little bit of douching (extra fancy guide) if you want to push it
  2. Lube. However much you think you need, more than that. Simple oils can work fine. Soap is horrible. Store bought water lube is best.
  3. Having fun, a relaxed exploratory afternoon 😊
Meron35 ,

For 2. spend the time and do a “spot” test similar to laundry detergents. Some lubes can be very irritating and burn (usually the really cheap ones). It can be somewhat confusing because both the physical stretch and substance irritation feel like a burning sensation.

Whippygoatcream ,

I personally prefer silicone-based lube for back door play. Lasts a LOT longer, doesn’t get sticky (can get dry, but nowhere near as quickly as water-based, in which case, just apply more lube,) and the overall glide just feels better imo. Clean-up is a little bit more intensive. Just a light scrub with soap and warm water, instead of a quick rinse or wipe. Toy play is a good warm-up. Just make sure your toy is specifically compatible with silicone-based lube or else you risk major problems.

Daxter101 , (edited )

That’s cool, but it’s a pretty advanced recommendation (at least where I live, stores don’t stock it, so it’s a little bit more of an investment).

Helping someone new to all this, by making it easy for them to start, is what I would have wanted to have someone do when I was starting out 😅

Diapers, eating, cuddling, cramps, that stuff’s easy. Starting to teach him things, that was the hard part for me… quite frankly, I was lost… she was freaking nowhere to be found regarding this, so I had no help from her… so I just started watching people in the park with babies, while we were having a stroll, do what they are doing with their kids. That was my starting point, and it was hard, but it got easier as I got more into it 😊.

I have been thinking about it, trust me. The situation got even more complex a few days ago (I could go into detail, but it really is a long story and I would like to tell the full story with all the details, but I just don’t have the time now). Basically, I’m now left with the option of, one, stay with her and probably suffer till he’s of age to decide which parrent he wants to be with (about 6 more years), or, two, I leave her now, roll the dice for custody and thow away a lot of money for lawyers (which I don’t have) and she probably kills herself at the end (when she looses the custody battle)… the situaton is very complex, I know that this might sound like I’m overreacting, but I’m not. The full story is far far more gruesome.

And I’m also thinking about his reaction to her being either gone from his life or not very present… an oportunity presented itself a few days ago, and I’ll monitor his reactions… still, we’ll see… I know I’ll hate myself if rip her away from his life, but I’ll have to access her influence on him and does the good outweigh the bad in her… we’ll see…

    Pinklink ,

I have a shit mom and a great dad. They got divorced when I was fairly young. I still have a relationship with both of them, but thank god for my good dad because I’m not sure I would be an okay person without him. One good parent can be enough to keep you sane. So keep it up, you can do it :)

I still don’t get this; who wants to log onto twitter and see reddit? Or log onto reddit and see twitter?

As somebody who never understood the appeal of twitter, I’m glad my Lemmy isn’t clogged up with a bunch of Mastadon content, personally

edit: the likelihood that I’m missing some salient point here is high, so genuinely please educate me on what I’m not understanding

edit 2: Okay, I’ve read the replies and I get it a little bit more, especially the point about additional ease in growing the Lemmy userbase during this building phase. I’m not sure I’ll ever really “get” the appeal, but you all have helped me understand the value to some degree, so thank you.

    Diabolo96 ,

It’s about connecting with the maximum of people. You like how lemmy look but other people are used to how Twitter look and will choose Mastodon instead, but in the end what matters is that we can all talk to each other no matter our personal social media preferences.

    AlligatorBlizzard ,

Mastodon is quite a bit bigger than Lemmy and if you make it easy to interact here some of the Mastodon users might decide to join Lemmy too. I’m kind of in the opposite situation, I’m on here and I don’t have a Mastodon, but if I could see more of Mastodon from Lemmy I might decide I’m interested enough in that content to make a Mastodon account. But I never really got into Twitter, even if some form of a character limit would help improve my writing.

    Land_Strider ,

For me, this is the opposite situation. I like long texts that detail other aspects in a topic, the writer’s intent, references, lists, etc. that make discussion matter more and hit its core aim rather than having a limited space where you can only vent your emotions in a few words or just simply talk about something in a limited, headline-esque urgency.

I think the character limit was increased a bit over the years but the short text culture persisted, even if some people try to use chain comments as a way of posting long discussion texts. The platform simply goads people into that style, which is antithetical to meaningful discussion.

    AlligatorBlizzard ,

That is, overall, my view of the character limit situation too, that the character limit forces nuance to be lost and contributed to some of the issues Twitter had pre-Elon (Elon’s influence on Twitter culture has been far more harmful though). More what I meant is that I’m a novelist as a hobby and I’m sometimes too verbose in my writing. An artificial character limit might help me practice writing tight, punchy sentences.

    erev ,
    @erev@lemmy.world avatar

I also tend to be a bit long winded. I enjoy using a diverse diction and try to maintain some grammatical consistency. Neither of those things are well expressed on short-text platforms. Like even this comment feels too long for Twitter or Mastodon.

    CanadianCarl ,

    Ditto

    Glitchington , (edited )
    @Glitchington@lemmy.world avatar

The core similarity of all these platforms is content aggregation. The differences come down to how that content is served, categorized, and interacted with. Federation ideally distributes content to relevant communities, based on interest, regardless of platform preference.

Edit: Also, people you don’t like will be on every site. We have tools to democratically tell those people we don’t like their ideas, so using them will make every platform better.

    EfreetSK , (edited )
    @EfreetSK@lemmy.world avatar

Personally I’d sometimes appreciate it, especially from Lemmy to Mastodon. Sometimes I find something interresting or useful on Lemmy and I’d love to just boost it on my Mastodon. The way it’s now is that I post the link to Lemmy post on my Mastodon and this isn’t nice, f.e. now I have two comment sections (one on Lemmy, one on Mastodon) and if people on Mastodon want to join Lemmy discussion, they need to have Lemmy account.

Also the other way arround (from Mastodon to Lemmy) - sometimes I see screenshots of Mastodon messages. It shouldn’t be like that, we should share the original post directly in Lemmy which would credit the author and we could join discussion

Edit. But btw this is already working … sort of. In a very, very limited way. F.e. this is how I see this post in Tusky app with my Mastodon account. No image, no comments, it’s … meh. I think you can somehow join the discussion too or just reply to a single comment but again, it’s very limited atm

    Sekoia ,

The point you’re missing is that it isn’t about integrating significantly different platforms like lemmy and mastodon, but rather connecting platforms that are close enough.

Mastodon federates with misskey, firefish, iceshrimp, sharkey, (all extremely featured and very similar to mastodon), writefreely (more for blogging and writing but absolutely connects), some wordpress websites (there’s a plugin), peertube (you can follow channels to see when videos are posted), friendica and who knows how many tiny custom instances.

This allows massive customisation of your experience.

Anyway, interop is more of a happy side-effect of using a common federation protocol

There was a game that came out a few years ago that scanned in most of its rocks for photorealism. I can’t recall the name. EA was the publisher, I think?

UE5 uses mega scans of real world assets.

    Vee4 ,

I think the newer Star Wars Battlefront games did that.

    doggle ,

Tons of games do that now. Usually they get scans and models from other companies, like Quixel Mega scans. It makes for a relatively fast workflow. Pretty much any photo-real game is doing something like this, it’s just more affordable than paying people to digitally sculpt rocks by hand.

Why did the finger curl? Nothing changed

I should have specified. This finger curled 15 years ago

And all the 5GB worth of rocks were generated using a single Houdini script.

    doggle ,

Setting aside that asset production is genuinely one of the most expensive parts of game dev, if they’re smart they can use some clever GPU instancing to improve performance by reusing assets

No clue if that’s happening here, though

It’s one more rock, Michael. What could it cost, ten dollars?

Imagine not having screens in your windows.

This post was made by the flying insects gang.

    Marcbmann ,

I’m in the US and have these windows. They have screens. They’re also not that special. I prefer the regular windows

    limelight79 ,

I was starting to wonder if Europe didn’t have insects, because the hotels I’ve stayed in (in Europe) that had them didn’t have screens for them.

    GoodEye8 ,

We have civilized insects, they respect our privacy and don’t enter unless they must.

You’re joking but that’s basically it, it’s just not an issue in most places.

I have these windows in Moscow, Russia since recently (had old windows with separate wooden frames with thick glass made somewhere about 70s, they looked nice though) and like that I can use the sill as a table with laptop and tea and some stuff now, and tilt it instead of moving the laptop aside.

    Aganim , (edited )

Ah yes, the good old Russian defenestration windows. I assume you have the FSB-mandated variant that is capable of both tilting and swinging, for… ease of access?

    rottingleaf ,

My brain had a segfault reading your comment, because the approved ones would obviously not be “anti-defenestration”, but yeah, swinging is nice

    Aganim ,

Yeah, sorry, my dark sense of humour didn’t combine very well with typing it out before my first cup of coffee.

    Ataraxia ,

It’s technically not illegal till you seed

    shea ,

you’re always sending and receiving data, that’s why it’s illegal the whole time. That’s what the little tab that says “ratio” is measuring, the ratio of hownmuch your uploading vs downloading. Afaik it’s pretty much impossible to use p2p file sharing without participating in spreading the files

    DreamlandLividity ,

It is 100% possible. Our school network at uni (including dorms) had a very strict no illegal seeding policy. It was possible to tweak uTorrent settings not to upload but if you messed it up, you were without internet for a day and there was a 3 strike policy.

    Senshi ,

There are many special versions of torrent tools that allow disabling uploading. If course you still have to upload your requests “please give me block 1234 of file XYZ”, which some tools include in the transfer rate shown and others show separate as overhead or meta transfer rates. However, no actual file contents will be uploaded. This is important for some jurisdictions/nations. While both downloading and uploading content is illegal, uploading causes more “damage” ( it’s legally easy to claim proliferation of the uploaded content, multiplying the financial damage). Also, in some countries, it’s either but legal to track user downloads at all or not in a manner that would provide court-proof evidence. Proving illegal uploads is very easy: the legal company will simply use the p2p network itself, but record which blocks were received from what IP address at what time. This list in many countries is sufficient to get a court to order the ISPs to share info on who owned that IP address at that time, opening you up to a lawsuit.

Thus example is how it works in Germany and must other EU countries. The exact approach obviously differs, because everyone has variations of privacy laws. E.g. not every country makes isps store IP assignment history for longer than necessary for billing purposes ( usually a month), whereas in other countries isps hand out that info even without court orders…

Educate yourself and act smart. There is no magic protection when doing p2p piracy. Luckily, most companies do not care to pursue pirates. Others ( like kalypso media) are infamous for having partnered with legal companies whose sole purpose is to generate income by chasing pirates with intimidating and expensive “pay 800€ now or we sue you in court for millions” letters.
