Ataraxia ,

It’s technically not illegal till you seed

shea ,

you’re always sending and receiving data, that’s why it’s illegal the whole time. That’s what the little tab that says “ratio” is measuring, the ratio of hownmuch your uploading vs downloading. Afaik it’s pretty much impossible to use p2p file sharing without participating in spreading the files

DreamlandLividity ,

It is 100% possible. Our school network at uni (including dorms) had a very strict no illegal seeding policy. It was possible to tweak uTorrent settings not to upload but if you messed it up, you were without internet for a day and there was a 3 strike policy.

Senshi ,

There are many special versions of torrent tools that allow disabling uploading. If course you still have to upload your requests “please give me block 1234 of file XYZ”, which some tools include in the transfer rate shown and others show separate as overhead or meta transfer rates. However, no actual file contents will be uploaded. This is important for some jurisdictions/nations. While both downloading and uploading content is illegal, uploading causes more “damage” ( it’s legally easy to claim proliferation of the uploaded content, multiplying the financial damage). Also, in some countries, it’s either but legal to track user downloads at all or not in a manner that would provide court-proof evidence. Proving illegal uploads is very easy: the legal company will simply use the p2p network itself, but record which blocks were received from what IP address at what time. This list in many countries is sufficient to get a court to order the ISPs to share info on who owned that IP address at that time, opening you up to a lawsuit.

Thus example is how it works in Germany and must other EU countries. The exact approach obviously differs, because everyone has variations of privacy laws. E.g. not every country makes isps store IP assignment history for longer than necessary for billing purposes ( usually a month), whereas in other countries isps hand out that info even without court orders…

Educate yourself and act smart. There is no magic protection when doing p2p piracy. Luckily, most companies do not care to pursue pirates. Others ( like kalypso media) are infamous for having partnered with legal companies whose sole purpose is to generate income by chasing pirates with intimidating and expensive “pay 800€ now or we sue you in court for millions” letters.

You want a slug-related traumatizing story ? I had a cat with very long hairs, there was a cat door to the garden outside but usually he slept inside. One morning i wake up and feel the cat close to me in the bed, something very common. I start to pet him on the dark being half awake only. After some time i feel something wet in his belly fur, but as I’m half sleepy I don’t react and keep petting him. Only after what was probably a long time, I realized that something is wrong, turn on the light and see a slug curled/trapped inside his fur, I was touching it with my hand for several minutes!

Ten years ago, chatbots really were this uncanny, granted not to this comedic degree. Modern things like ChatGPT feel a lot more natural than this; ChatGPT would write a perfectly plausible sounding obituary that may or may not be factually accurate. “Brenda is survived by a husband and three children.” Brenda is a widow with two children. Can’t relate. It’s 20231231 for me.

Edit: Also this format is superior for file sorting. All files are chronological.

In your time format: 010124 goes before 123123.

You could have 4 files dated: January 01, 2002; June 11, 2001; July 21, 2004; December 31, 2003

In your time format the files would be sorted like this:

<pre style="background-color:#ffffff;">
<span style="color:#323232;">010102
</span><span style="color:#323232;">061101
</span><span style="color:#323232;">072104
</span><span style="color:#323232;">123103
</span>

It’s 2002, then 2001, then 2004, then 2003. What a fucking mess.

In ISO 8601, there’s no such issue.

Before you reply saying theres a sort by date feature, yes I know, but file creation date isn’t the same as when the data is actually recorded. You could be inputting that data from a piece of paper in 2005 after the data being recorded in the years prior, so the creation dates would all be in 2005. Also, sometimes when copying files, the dates randomly reset. Putting the date in the filename ensures it wouldn’t disappear due to OS shenanigans.

nero ,
@nero@lemmy.world avatar

How does that last point work? The ”Putting the date in the files ensures it wouldn’t disappear due to OS shenanigans.”?

001100010010 ,
@001100010010@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Example:

Lab_Report_20020101

That’s what I always do with files. Windows like to reset your date attributes for some reason. If you copy a file, or upload it to cloud and redownload, there are some cloud services that doesn’t save the file date for some reason. Filename always gets saved.

NessD ,

You create a file on 30.09.2010, back it up and lose it due to hardware failure on 12.07.2022. When you restore the file from your backup to your device it will most likely be stamped as created 12.07.2022 even though originally it was created before that. If you name your file manual_2010-09-30.pdf you always know the date it was created and sort it by that filename.

nero ,
@nero@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks for the example!

TWeaK ,

Strictly speaking in ISO 8601 it would be 2023-12-31.

001100010010 ,
@001100010010@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

gnutrino ,

20231231 is a valid ISO 8601 date, the separators are optional.

Zamotic ,

I completely agree. Everyone always asks me why I suffix my filenames with the date like this (or YYYY.MM.DD). But this is so files sure up in correct order when sorted my name. It seems so obvious.

Ricaz ,
@Ricaz@lemmy.world avatar

Meanwhile Linux (ext4) users are over here sorting by whatever we want.

With ctime, mtime and atime it doesn’t matter what you call your files!

I use Arch btw

Eheran ,

Sure, but then you need the correct file property or else nothing works? Since it is usually not my job to create files, I depend on companies to do the job right. But I have some bad news there. Example: DJI names the recordings or pictures you take something like DJI0001.jpg. guess what happens after DJI0999.jpg? That’s right, DJI0001.jpg. and don’t get me going about random time jumps in the date recorded/taken embedded in the file. Pure cancer. The script to rename the files to YYYYMMDD_HHMMSS looks like shit because of all the special cases you need to consider.

Aceticon , (edited )

I read that in the sense that they’re too conventional looking for what is a pink acid trip around a mass produced toy doll with an impossibly shaped body.

In fact of all 4 that’s the only critique which is actually about the movie (notice how all the others are raging against some general fantasy they have in their minds, which they associated with the movie) and it even uses language that’s not typical of the far-right crowd (how many far right nutters have you ever seen casually mentioning experiences from taking some kind of drug even in a methaphorical sense?!)

I suspect that it might actually be a legic critique, on top of which some people are projecting their own internal prejudices (because it was mixed with and presented as something from a far-right raging nutter) without actually doing your own personal analysis of it (aka thinking for yourself)

It’s a bit hypocrite (or lacking self-awareness) to criticise others for their unthinking prejudiced take on something whilst having an unthinking prejudiced take on something.

I mean, a liitle thinking about it by yourself easilly leads to the same conclusion as the OP on the other 3 (clearly the product of brainless rightwinger fanatics) it’s only this one that in style and content seems off from that, unless you’re forcing certain possible but not logical interpretations of the meaning of its contents to force it to fit a prejudgement, which, IMHO, is dangerously parallel to very same mental processes that lead the far-right nutters to think this movie is about “spreading gayness”.

No saying that I agree or disagree: all I’m saying is that this 4th comment in style and substance does not seem to be in the same bucket as the other 3.

There’s only one type of torx and I think OP is winding us up :)

Edit - ha ha oh my fucking god. So it turns out the patent for torx expired in 1990. No change for us in Europe, we’re still mostly using the original design.

Not so much for the yanks. Textron, the original patent holder, realised it’d be faaaar more profitable to “licence” slightly improved designs and try to phase out the original

Enjoy your torx my euro friends, and have a giggle at the seppos paying for a fucking screw head lol

renzev OP ,

There’s only one type of torx

There isn’t. There’s Torx, Torx Plus, and Torx Paralobe. See here for more details: www.semblex.com/en/…/torx-paralobe-pdf/ . Plus there’s also the ttap and tamper-resistant variants shown in the meme.

As other people have mentioned, Torx screwdrivers are forwards compatible with Torx Plus and Torx Paralobe. But the screwdrivers for the newer standards are not backwards compatible with older screws.

Similarly, Tamper-Resistant Torx screwdrivers can be used on regular Torx screws. But Tamper-Resistant Torx Plus screwdrivers cannot be used on regular Torx Plus screws – it’s a completely different shape!

If you’re in a professional setting where you order high-quality screws and drivers in bulk directly from a manufacturer, I’d imagine that this isn’t much of an issue. But if you’re a hobbyist or just need to repair something in a domestic setting, the three different torx variants plus the other non-torx hexalobular screws (WA drive, Polydrive, T-Star Plus) can cause quite a bit of confusion. Anecdotally, I have a set of what I thought were really low-quality Torx bits. Turns out, they’re actually good-quality Torx Plus bits that by design don’t fit my Torx screws.

Did some searching and it seems like the pushback is because Games Workshop added female characters? Am I understanding that right?

Stanley_Pain ,
@Stanley_Pain@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Yes, pretty much.

Mr_Fish ,

I think a big part of the anger was about the fact that it was a hard retcon. It used to be official in the lore that “all space marines are male,” but Games Workshop changed it to “there have always been female space marines”.

frezik ,

There were female space marines in the original Rogue Trader. Male-only is already a retcon.

ThunderclapSasquatch ,

And marines were just normal people, the Primarchs just generals and orks used bolters

zalgotext , (edited )

Isn’t there a ton of “retconning*” in 40k lore, sort of on purpose? Like I always thought 40k lore was made up of bits and scraps from all different perspectives from different races and groups all throughout the 40k universe. It’s justifiable, even expected, to have inconsistencies when your history is being written by so many varied authors.

Cypher ,

Custodes aren’t Space Marines.

GregorGizeh ,

It is a bit more nuanced than that, AFAIK they added female versions of a specific subset of human military, which for all this time were explicitly male with various lore reasons supporting that fact.

I’m not involved in the hobby myself but went on the occasional lore reading spree on the wikis, as s disclaimer. But I can understand that fans are upset about retcons such as this, where there wasn’t much ambiguity in the lore to squeeze the change in, making it a pretty hard lore break

metaStatic ,

it's 100% because of the gaslighting.

tell me it wouldn't be the most 40k/Metal thing to just let women throw themselves at the training with zero prejudice and the 0.000001% that survive are just so much better than the men because the odds where so much worse. You could even hard retcon that in and no one would be mad because it's plausible that it's just never happened before so of course it's never been in the lore.

it's not like GW are bad at this sort of thing either, they got people to accept Primaris marines and that's a much bigger load of horseshit from a lore perspective.

Cypher ,

Hmmm Custodes don’t ever get a choice about their training. They start being modified from infancy.

It’s constantly amusing to me how many lore purists get simple stuff wrong that is spelt out in the Codexes.

PugJesus ,

If memory serves, Custodes, unlike Space Marines, were not specified as being male-only, it was only implied (by never mentioning any female Custodes). As the process for making Custodes and Space Marines is vastly different, fan speculation on female Custodes has been around for a while.

GBU_28 ,

Yeah, there were a group of male supersoldiers (custodes) who were literally written originally to be a “brotherhood” in the early lore from the 90s, and always represented that way. They changed it in a lore shitty way, essentially saying there were women custodes all along and never addressing the original lore

Some folks were like “yo, write consistently, and if you wanna change something, just change it with new lore” and some folks were like “” ahhh fuck women! They could never hack it as my favorite character!!!"

it literally doesn’t matter because these supersoldiers are works of science fiction, so removed from reality that they are hand built by techno gene craft. There’s nothing about the setting that would make such fiction impossible

ThunderclapSasquatch ,

40k drama is always more complicated than that while being way dumber at the same time
