I love people who think two seconds after someone yells gun a sniper is going to shoot someone. uvalde went on for hours.

Liz ,

Independent of Uvalde, it’s generally a bad idea as a sniper to just take someone else’s wors that the target you’re looking at is hostile. Kinda wanna confirm for yourself before you pull the trigger.

😏
I see what you did there

kionite231 ,

Could you explain it to me? I don’t really know the meaning of “it’s sick” (Is it ill?)

Beardsley ,

Sick can be used either to refer to something unfortunate (as in ill), or to refer to something really awesome. It’s just casual American slang.

Fades , (edited )

Calling something sick is far more than unfortunate, it’s closer to demented or disgusting

dan ,
@dan@upvote.au avatar

It’s just casual American slang.

We used to use it in Australia in the 2000s too. If something was very awesome, it was “fully sick”.

someguy3 ,

Sick is said as a bad thing. But in teenager slang it can be used as something cool.

kionite231 ,

That’s why biden used this double meaning word… I see.

TrickDacy ,

He clearly didn’t intend it to mean anything else but the literal meaning

someguy3 ,

No. It only has that meaning if you’re 14 and very edgy. No adult will use it like a teenager would.

PeriodicallyPedantic , (edited )

Sick has had this meaning since like… The 70s or 80s. Its not just edgy teens. In fact I suspect that this has probably fallen out of favor with gen alpha.

So if anything, I think you probably have that exactly backwards

someguy3 ,

It’s been around for a long time but you stop using it like that once you have a sliver of adulthood. The point being that no Biden did not use it as a double entendre.

PeriodicallyPedantic ,

I can practically feel the elitism oozing off you, through the Internet 🤣

someguy3 ,

And I can see through your personal attack. Cheers.

PeriodicallyPedantic ,

Yup, calling you out on a general attack sure is a personal attack. 10/10 mental gymnastics routine

grue ,

Still at least two generations newer than any slang Biden would use.

PeriodicallyPedantic ,

Oh for sure, my comment wasn’t literal. No way does Biden have the presence of mind to make a slick response like that

Do you know how confusing it is that Thomas the Tank Engine has three blue, two red, and two green characters and they are the same shade of paint? We read Thomas books and my kid gets confused because Emily drives past Thomas, then meets Thomas coming down the line, past Thomas number 3.

I’m gonna guess British shops only sold three colours of paint in 1984?

Such a trainsist, thinking all blue or green trains look the same. /s

Technofrood ,

Given Awdry was quite keen on accuracy to the real world engines (see the falling out with one of the first artists) I’m actually surprised there isn’t more consistency with the liveries. The Culdee Fell Railway has all engines with the same purple livery, and I think from memory the steam trains on the Skarloey Railway are red, which is more accurate to real life as generally each railway would have its own livery.

I think earlier on when there were fewer engines it was less of a problem as they all had fairly distinct shapes being based on different real engine classes Garden and pre rebuild Henry probably being the least distinct.

I dunno, seems reasonable to me in the same way that Spanish using “¿” at the beginning of a question makes sense.

That it’s inconsistent with other units is certainly annoying, but if anything I think it’s the more sensible way.

CoffeeJunkie ,

Spanish is definitely fucked, putting the adjective after the noun. You don’t pet the brown dog, you pet the dog brown.

lone_faerie ,

Idk, I kinda get it, adjectives are just descriptors. In Spanish, you can drop the end of the sentence and still get its meaning. You don’t pet the brown, you pet the dog.

zarathustrad ,

This dog is black, not.

TrousersMcPants ,

It’s a convention for writing checks. If the dollar amount on a check read “300.00$” there’s nothing stopping me from writing “1300.00$” on there. But if you put “$300.00” that number is enclosed on both sides and there is no chance of being able to modify it (without significantly more effort that can be much more easily noticed)

Not from the US and I don’t understand why one would support a candidate just because he survived an assassination attempt. Can somebody explain the logic behind this?

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I guess it made him look stronger or cooler or something. He’ll probably also use this to say that Democrats are trying to kill him, insinuating that they don’t mind killing people to achieve their goals.

WraithGear ,
@WraithGear@lemmy.world avatar

Which is funny because killing people to achieve his goals is Trumps political platform.

Daxtron2 ,

no one really likes that orange prick

The Republicans will fall in line behind their guy like they always do, despite their complaining

Anyolduser ,

American here, I haven’t heard one peep about Trump getting more support because of this outside of Lemmy.

Whether or not the Trump campaign can spin this in their favor depends entirely on the motive of the assassin. If they were just some nutjob, there really isn’t much they can do.

If, on the other hand, the assassination attempt was politically motivated, there are two ways I can see this whole thing being spun:

  1. “The other side knows I’ll win and the only way to stop me is to kill me. If you don’t like them, vote for me because I scare them and they hate me.”
  2. “The other side is so evil and vile they would stoop to try to kill me rather than have a fair election”.

In the event that the assassin wasn’t some flavor of crazy, spin number one is more likely than spin number two, but they’re hardly mutually exclusive.

chicagohuman ,

Does it matter if it’s true? It hasn’t in the past

Anyolduser ,

Not to the “base” of either of the major parties, no. Those voters are already committed to their candidates.

This election is likely to come down to independents and undecided voters. Where that messaging could matter is with people who are unsatisfied with the Democratic party AND dislike Trump.

The idea that “they hate me enough to kill me” might be compelling to someone with a strong dislike of the Democratic party, perhaps enough to get them to hold their nose and vote for Trump. That being said, I wouldn’t even venture a guess at how many people that would be.

Evotech ,

PredictIT increased the chance that trump would win to 66% from 60.

Uplink ,
@Uplink@programming.dev avatar

I don’t think the motivation matters. They will just spin it in any way they think it will benefit them.

GBU_28 ,

It’s not a purely American phenomena. It paints a candidate in a human light, as they “survived” a very public “tragedy”, yet are still strongly pursuing what they think is right.

It’s a humanizing event.

This is not a pro trump comment.

Edit but this is certainly not a pro violence comment either

TokenBoomer OP ,

This is the truth. This is what everyone has been trying to communicate.

Kaboom ,

Voting against the people who got their base that riled up

EtherWhack ,
@EtherWhack@lemmy.world avatar

Depending on how the event is spun (story-wise), an attempt like this could make the other candidate’s party seem unhinged enough that one of their members would do (and apparently fail badly at) this. This, making the target, and their party by association, seem more noble than thay may be.

To a lot of people, whether the shooting is or isn’t affiliated doesn’t really get questioned no matter what they hear, as what party would hurt itself? They’ll immediately think there is some conspiracy (the human psychology loves these rabbit holes) to make it seem like any favoring affiliation to the target’s political side is staged by the other.

tacosanonymous ,

It does seem weird that a felonious rapist would get a boost from not dying. Even more baffling that he’s likely a pedo.

But lying and spinning by a corrupt machine can go along way in a country full of ignorant assholes.
