Schadrach , to memes in I'm giving them a year until lifetime licenses start to mean nothing.

Nah, your lifetime license will be fine. They’ll just slightly rename the products, release them as “entirely new, unrelated products” and cease updating it under the old name. You can still use the old, never updated product in perpetuity, if you want…

The first time this happened to me was a MUD client of all things. zMUD discontinued, check out the new cMUD! Also available with a lifetime license just like zMUD was!

Anticorp ,

It’s not uncommon to do what you said, but to also kill the old product so that they’re not available any more. Sometimes it’s the exact same product, but with a different name.

Schadrach ,

Sometimes it’s the exact same product, but with a different name.

That’s basically what zmud/cmud was. He basically slapped a different name on a major update and declared that since it’s a different product it requires a separate license and the old product would no longer be updated.

No need to kill the old product if you just let it stagnate. Things like OS updates and providing no support will slowly kill it for you, without you generating the ill will of prematurely killing lifetime licenses.

reinei ,

Honestly that would only mean no more updates for the 2.0 version though, right?

Like you already had to buy a new license for 2.0 so it would be like Affinity+Canvas going “we are releasing 3.0 tomorrow, sadly it’s subscription only despite our pledges because blah blah blah…” except in your case it’s a name change to allow them to do it without breaking their pledge, no?

I personally think it’s kind of dumb as hell. I’m not sure how you would know but also websites are a tiny fraction of emissions. If you want to lower emissions it’s much more effective to go for legislation local to you.

These are the same people who drive with paper-thin, or even fully rusted off, brake rotors. And then they yell at the mechanics for "upselling them" on brake maintenance.

I firmly believe that brakes should be the absolute last thing to fail on a car. The tires can rupture, the steering shatter, and the car snapped in two, but I must be able to bring the remaining wreckage to a stop.

ironhydroxide ,

Meh, the whole thing needs maintenance.

Brakes won’t do shit when all the tires are flat and you just lock up the wheels. Or when your tie rod end snaps and the car veers off the freeway faster than anyone can react to press the brakes.

Vespair ,

It’s the same principle. It’s the idea that the flow of traffic must go on and that people convenience are more important than anything else - climate, public spaces, pollution, freedom to use the vehicle you want, even people’s life.

I BCC because I’m stealthy.

railsdev , (edited )

I’ve actually blocked any incoming email without a valid email address (belonging to my domain) in the To: or CC: headers; it’s helped me cut spam significantly.

Using a specific prefix I can generate a new email address for each website I visit. So when someone emails me, they’re forced to tell on themselves and/or the website they stole/bought my email address from.

All this makes it easy to see who lied and sold my shit (data) after I explicitly said not to. And I figure if I really needed to be BCC’d on something, the sender can simply forward the email to me after they receive the rejection message.

onion ,

Btw you can use an aliasing service like addy.io or simplelogin, that way you can disable the leaked alias on top of knowing who leaked it

Memes are going through a cycle similar to art I feel. We started with just basic memes of text on random pictures. Then we got really good at those and we started making meta memes. Then we started contemporary memes: memes that challenge what it even means to be a meme (b and big chungus). And now we are tired of contemporary memes and moving back towards basic memes.
