datavoid , to piracy in Vimms Lair is getting removal notices from Nintendo etc. We need someone to help make a rom pack archive can you help?

There are already torrents containing collections of all the games from old systems. What there needs to be is an “official” collection torrent for each system that archivists can store and seed individually

xnx OP ,

There arent ones that include hacks and fan translations. For example PSP games like monster hunter portable 2nd G with the FUComplete patch or Monster Hunter Portable 3rd G with the English Patch v5

matcha_addict ,

Do you know where I can find them? I will seed them all

ERPAdvocate ,

Anecdotal, but when I was just messing with qBittorrent and its search feature, I found some ROM sets just by searching for system and sorting by size. This torrent for example is not necessarily comprehensive but contains a lot of roms of which can be shared with friends and family :)

kratoz29 ,

Every time I see this news (Reddit or Lemmy) I see this kind of comment, but I wonder, what if I want to download just a ROM of a few mbs? I certainly don’t want to hoard the whole collection, as a torrent user I believe I can just pick up the file (if it isn’t zipped), but wouldn’t that be against the torrent’s moral code?

Benchamoneh ,

But most (all?) Torrent clients let you select which files you want to download so of there was an official unarchived torrent then archivists could seed forever and others could select the ROMs/manuals/etc. that they wanted

Appoxo ,
@Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

And this way we will get uncompleted seeds and in the further future nobody will be able to complete the damn torrent.

blindsight ,

I don’t think that’s an issue. Downloading a partial is a problem on private trackers since there are so few users, but on a public tracker, someone downloading a partial is just making the swarm a bit more robust: they are sharing connections details to other users in the swarm and are able to partially seed part of the content.

Hit & run torrent users are the bigger problem; they add nothing to the ecosystem. But, for example, if there’s a “complete early roms for all systems nointro unzipped” torrent, and someone only downloads and seeds the SNES section, then the swarm gets the benefit of someone sharing that section of the content.

You could even get a situation where there are no “seeds” but 100% availability, with different people sharing different sections.

I’m not fully looped in to why Anna’s Archive did what they did, but their massive 1TB+ torrent zips are pretty useless for most purposes. I’d be happy to download a partial and seed books in, say, a particular genre, but I’m not going to seed a partial of a massive zip file that’s useless to me without the full archive.

Appoxo ,
@Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Amd those H&R users are exactly why it wont work.
Maybe a popular archive will stay alive by the few voluntary seeders but I believe the seed woll be dead.

pineapplelover ,

You can partially seed?

datavoid ,

Yes you definitely can

blindsight ,

I don’t know the terminology, but so long as the torrent is active, you’re uploading. If you selectively download files, then you can only upload the chunks you have downloaded, obviously. Is that “seeding” if you aren’t a “seed” with 1.00 availability? idk.

I’d still count that as “seeding” since you’re running the torrent for upload only, but idk if there’s a precise definition somewhere.

WarmApplePieShrek ,

Yes. Select to download a part and when you downloaded that part you are seeding it. The torrent swarm counts you as a leecher, since it doesn’t know you are done downloading. But you are actually seeding your part.

pineapplelover ,

What if I only want to download a specific part of it and not more than that. For example a specific episode of curb your enthusiasm and not anything more. Is that possible to stop and seed that episode? I thought by default it will try to download the entire torrent.

WarmApplePieShrek ,

Select to download that part.

interdimensionalmeme ,

That is incorrect. Partial seeding means they seed the part they downloaded, end of story. There are no downsides.

Appoxo ,
@Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Correct. And Isaid if everyone just downloads the same 20% of the torrent because the other 80% is shovelware and unpopular means it’s lost because nobody downloaded the remaining 80% in the first place.

WarmApplePieShrek ,

qbittorrent shows you how many seeders each part of the file has. Archivists can prioritise the parts with the least.

Appoxo , (edited )
@Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Assuming those come to the rescue and quick enough before the last one abandons the seed without looking if someone is leeching the last part to make a 100% completion possible.

conciselyverbose ,

That’s not a different or added risk vs a website.

The fact that being stoic, emotionless or even cold is seen as a trait of masculinity is incredibly frustrating. I feel men should be encouraged to be passionate and expressive with their emotions. Anger shouldn't be the only one we encourage as a society. Have you ever seen a man glow up about his lego collection, or cry at a beautiful scene in a movie they love? More of that please.

Also, men are just as deserving of support networks as anyone else. Though we all experience life differently, we are all human in the end.

I love how I can just casually uninstall the entire desktop and install a new one in a few minutes.

Or I can be a complete madman and keep both.

rockSlayer ,

genuinely curious since I’ve never tried or even considered it. What happens when you have multiple desktops installed, and assuming it doesn’t cause issues why would a person want to do that?

henfredemars ,

Typically your display manager lets you choose which environment you want from a dropdown menu. It’s responsible for helping you login and taking you to the desktop.

And you can have multiple login screens if you like. I’m not sure why I would typically do this.

dustyData ,

There’s no added value to having multiple desktop environments, so almost no one would want to. A lot of applications use DE sensitive configurations and there’s potential for conflicts as well as libraries incompatibility. Which can result on paradoxical and bizarre behavior from some graphical apps. It’s odd that it happens but it’s also not something devs plan or account for, so they aren’t even considered bugs. You don’t install multiple DEs at the same time unless you’re purposefully trying to break something or you don’t know better.

The only use case currently is choosing between a DE with X or one with Wayland. But even that one could fuck your system.

For example, opening cinnamon experimental Wayland makes all my flatpaks stop working until reboot. Why? I don’t know, nobody knows. But if I keep using Wayland after reboot they work. If I change to regular cinnamon, they break again until reboot, when they get fixed as long as I keep using regular cinnamon. It just be like that.

Album ,
@Album@lemmy.ca avatar

I don’t use linux on desktop anymore but that seems like a major step backwards from 10 years ago where your worst worry for running multiple DEs was the bloat from having to run GTK and QT in a mixed environment.

dustyData ,

It’s not. Its actually always been like that. Like I said, this kinds of problems are odd and rare. The real issue is that the most help you’d get from the devs teams is a shrug, as it is an unsupported use case. I actually do have both gtk and qt libraries running and they work nicely together.

Ephera ,

They’re making it sound worse than it is, in my opinion.

The problem is that it depends on which DEs you mix and match. Some DEs might do catastrophically bad things for other DEs, whereas others don’t cause any problems.

toothbrush ,
@toothbrush@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I have many DE’s installed right now and I never encountered any problems because of it, these issues sound really bizarre. With the cinnamon thing it sounds like cinnamon mangles something while running, but you would still have this problem if you only ever installed cinnamon, so… ¯_ (ツ) _/¯

poinck , (edited )

This is so wrong. Especially the assumption that almost no one would want to have more than 1 DE installed.

Most DEs have their own configuration which don’t conflict.

If the maintainer of a distribution has their shit together library incompatibility is no issue. Even on Gentoo you have to ignore everything portage is trying to tell you before you get in trouble.

In the past I even ran two DEs at the same time, sort of. You could start an xfce-panel while using enlightment or good old classic windowmaker.

Later I used Gnome and running my own fork of dwm in a nested Xserver. With wayland this option hasn’t gone thanks to Xwayland.

If systemd is correctly set up for it, you get a different seat for every DE, no matter if some seats are hosting the same DE or a different one. I am not sure what will happen if you have several graphical logins with the same user, never tried it.

TrickDacy ,

Ephera ,

openSUSE pre-installs IceWM, for example, even if you select a full-fledged DE during setup, so that if your proper DE should ever break, you still have a (very minimal) GUI to do your troubleshooting in.

rockSlayer ,

That’s pretty cool! My immediate reaction to hearing “minimal backup DE for troubleshooting” is wondering why that isn’t far more common

boredsquirrel OP ,
@boredsquirrel@slrpnk.net avatar

I think this is nice but also adds some bloat.

Like that OpenSUSE model only works if both use XOrg, so if XOrg breaks it doesnt work.

On Wayland, either DEs get their shit together and share libraries, or GNOME, KDE, Wayfire, labwc, COSMIC, and in the future XFCE, Cinnamon and more all use their own stuff.

This would mean you need to add another wayland compositor and the GUI stuff.

There is a bit of a lack of complete minimal DEs. Raspberry Pi has their stuff based on Wayfire, LXQt 6.1 will be wayland ready and can be used with many compositors.

These would be good candidates, but really what is a broken Desktop?

But I will do a post in Fedora discuss about this, even though I dont think the Atomic variants need it.

BlushedPotatoPlayers ,

You can have a computer with multiple users, one prefers gnome, the other kde. Say, they also want to access the computer through cnc, but these are too slow for that, and one prefers windowmaker, the other enlightenment. It works just fine. You can run all these four at the same time.

ordellrb ,

You can choose on the login screen, works well, but it gets confusing if the whole Desktop gets installed: example GNOME comes with gnome-terminal even if there is already xterm or KDE Konsole on the system

FiskFisk33 ,

typically you get a dropdown at the login screen :)

Toine ,

Unless you plan to retire very early, you should try to learn guitar long before retirement. Learning something, especially music, is much harder when you get older.

FewerWheels ,

I get that you’re trying to be helpful, but playing the guitar well isn’t the goal. It’s ok that it is more difficult to learn as you get older, the point is to enjoy the learning. It’s unhelpful to discourage anyone at any stage of life from learning to play a new instrument or learn a new skill. Enjoy the process when you are free to take all the time you need.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I agree. I have taught myself to play many instruments in my life. I can’t play any of them well, but that wasn’t the point. The point was to learn how to play a new musical instrument. Sure, I can’t pick up a saxophone right now and sound like John Coltrane, but I know all the essentials of how to play a saxophone, and if I spent a couple of weeks at it, I could probably do some basic, but listenable, jazz on it. With a guitar, I can’t pick it up and play like Jimi Hendrix, but I can play chords and sing along with them. I’ve learned a lot of other instruments at a very amateur level because the joy wasn’t in learning to play them well, it was in learning to play them.
