perishthethought , to gaming in Valve’s hero shooter Deadlock leaks with screenshots, gameplay details - Polygon

They had me at tower defense mechanics.

lemmyvore ,

They’re surprisingly fun and I wonder why more team deathmatch games don’t include them.

I used to play Tremulous and it was super addictive to live and die by your base elements. Gives the game a whole new dimension about strategy and teamwork.

apotheotic ,

Oh my god thank you for reminding me that tremulous existed. I spent so many hours playing that

Midnitte ,

I’ve never heard of it, did it serve as inspiration for Natural Selection?

lemmyvore , (edited )

Here is some gameplay (from the alien camp point of view). This is another good example of gameplay.

Apparently both Natural Selection and Tremulous were inspired by the Gloom mod for Quake 2, according to the Tremulous FAQ:

Development on Tremulous began long before NS was in the public domain. If Tremulous is inspired by anything, it is inspired by Gloom for Quake 2. NS has a similar ancestry (please see Game Developer Magazine February 2001 issue); this is probably where the confusion arises.

Ah, thanks!

FiniteBanjo ,

Also be sure that you send it from the email associated with your account. As per the update on the situation discord gave, in which it announced an extended deadline of 90 days up from 30 days from April 15th or account creation, the contents of the email don’t seem to matter much.

Re: Opt-out of arbitration clause in agreement dated 04/15/24

Dear Sir or Madam:

I am writing to opt out of the arbitration clause in my agreement with Discord dated 04/15/24 for the Communication client Discord.

If you have any questions, you may reach me at the address above.

Yours sincerely,

[My username, legal name, and ID.]

yokonzo ,

What did you send them, is there a template?

randint ,
@randint@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz avatar

I just sent them a simple email with the subject being “arbitration opt-out” and a body of “I opt out of mandatory arbitration.”

ggppjj ,

In email terms, a bounceback is a category of error that in this case meant that the email address didn’t exist. Although, that’s because I emailed opt-out instead of arbitration-opt-out. My mistake. After fixing it, it went through without a reply as has been the general experience.

Desistance ,
@Desistance@lemmy.world avatar

Indeed. I’ll definitely consider buying one if I can turn it into a Steam box.

amazing2 , to gaming in It shouldn’t be this hard to play old Armored Core games

Eh, if you want to play retro games just buy a used console, mod it, play pirated games. Of if your PC is good enough just emulate.

I love how the author of the article says that From Software should put out ports of the old games (and maybe remaster them while they’re at it) but you know when they review the package they’ll give a low score, say the game “really show its age” and “is only recommended for hardcore fans.” Well, the hardcore fans have played the originals and if not, they know how to emulate or pirate old games to use with original hardware.

Sentinian ,

Unless you are trying to the the ps3 game the ps2 and psp should be able to be emulated on literally any pc.

Hell psp runs fine on most android phones as well.

You literally have to be trying to not find a way to play these games if you say they aren’t easy to play. Fuck legality if the copyright hold is sitting on these games for no fucking reason

amazing2 ,

Yeah PSP games are trivial to emulate. My 2015 MacBook Air can run PPSSPP with ease, the games look great with the upped resolution.

SuperSteef ,

Even the PS3 game can be played via an emulator. The tech is still evolving so you still need a fairly powerful computer but it is playable. For reference, I was able to test archiving various PS3 games on my now 11 year old gaming PC which was a medium-tier system at the time of the build.

Domiku OP ,

I totally agree, but emulation still requires tons of unpaid work by enthusiasts. If/when Sony stops selling the PS3, they should turn over the source code and allow the community to make something really great. It’s not like they make any money of used console and game sales.

amazing2 ,

True but that’s how it’s always been. Most people who make emulators do it for the challenge or because they care about game preservation or both.

And they’ve done some wonderful things. One of my favourite things ever is the Nintendont launcher on the Wii. It lets you play GameCube disc images on the Wii natively. Even lets you use the normal controllers instead of having to plug in the original GameCube ones.

raptir ,

That’s not quite fair - Polygon had good things to say about the Cowabunga Collection for example.

roguetrick , to gaming in Terraforming Mars team defends AI use as Kickstarter hits $1.3 million

I actually think this brings up a good point. Artists they hire for these tabletop game jobs will end up using AI to create a base image or backgrounds and edit it for the project one way or another. They'll do it to increase their own output and income.

Edit: And guys like this will pay you less to extract more profits from you with that in mind of course.

TommySoda , to piracy in Warner Bros. is now erasing games as it plans to delist Adult Swim-published titles

Not sure whether they will remove it entirely or just delist it. I love Steam and the convenience of it and the majority of my games are on Steam. But this is why we should be able to own our games. You never know when your favorite game decides to do something like this.

catloaf ,

I don’t think any games have been completely removed from Steam. In cases like this, they stop new purchases, but anyone who already has it keeps it.

s38b35M5 ,
@s38b35M5@lemmy.world avatar

This comment seems to imply that at least some titles won’t function after the delisting, perhaps related to servers, perhaps not.

jabathekek ,
@jabathekek@sopuli.xyz avatar

AFAIK none of my steam games are only accessible through steam servers. All of my games are installed on-site in my HDD and I really don’t think Steam can uninstall them without my knowledge or consent. E.g. I can play any one of my games without an internet connection.

catloaf ,

Any game that uses Steamworks or other DRM will not be playable offline (without first putting Steam into offline mode, for Steamworks games, maybe others).

WarmSoda ,

99% of games you can install in its own folder and run forever (thus own it forever) And like the other person said games you own on steam are there after they’ve stopped being sold if you already own it. I have a few that don’t exist in the store anymore.

Shit practices like devs replacing games with new ones is a lot harder to circumvent though.

haui_lemmy ,

The largest issue is resale imo. If a game just isnt for me, I should be able to resell it. I hope the EU goes after this topic in the future.

Ganbat ,

The problem is, that doesn’t make sense for digital media. A large part of resales is media degradation. You pay less, but you take a risk upon yourself for it. Being able to refund a game that isn’t for you seems fair, though.

haui_lemmy ,

I keep hearing the most out of touch arguments for not owning what you buy, this being one of them.

Again, you buy something, you own it. I dont give a damn what the company thinks about that and if „resale“ works well or not. I buy game, after use, I sell it. Returning a game that isnt for you is separate.

Ptsf ,

You bought an exclusive license to play their game, they retain ownership of the digital information and in some cases the actual physical media. Actual ownership has been ‘dead’ for a long time now. I don’t like it. Yes, buy elsewhere if you can but we’re already past the point of consumers being able to influence this outcome with companies legally able to redefine “own” and “buy” via their ToS (not really visible to the consumer) to mean whatever best suits them.

haui_lemmy ,

I dont know why you feel the need to elaborate on this. I didnt ask. I know that this exists and it should be illegal. As I said, I hope the EU goes after this hard.

Also, the DMA is a big fuck you to all the „vote with your feet“ folks that try to shift blame to consumers. „No, it was actually the company responsible“. I loved that and hope this will go on.

Ptsf ,

Honestly! Not sure. 🤷‍♂️

trafficnab ,

In the EU at least, companies can say whatever they want in their ToS, it doesn’t change the fact that you legally own your digital games

Ptsf ,

Must me nice 😭

narrowscoped ,

I think it’s gonna get there very soon. Steam on Xbox, and also Xbox on steam deck.

The only issue with the latter is Valve is using proton translation to bypass windows and make their own thing, it’s a tremendously grey area that Microsoft has said NOTHING about, only because Steam is legit and game sale money go to publishers.

Imagine if Yuzu was legit and game sales still went to nintendo or 3rd parties, the tech behind proton and yuzu nce aren’t dissimilar!

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

How is Valve using Proton a grey area?

Mini_Moonpie ,

I’m guessing that they don’t mean a legally grey area. I think they probably mean it’s a grey area for Microsoft because Proton helps people get around needing Windows to play games made for Windows and Microsoft has an interest in keeping people on their OS.

xavier666 ,

Proton should be called PINE instead because PINE Is Not an Emulator.

maynarkh , to games in Microsoft Flight Sim players have the world at their fingertips; now they want a time machine, too

TL;DR:

Microsoft/Asobo is responding to the community asking for historical weather conditions instead of only now-current ones, they say it’s very hard to impossible to do it due to a lack of data and existing data being hard to get into the game.

bionicjoey ,

“Lack of data” seems a very strange reason considering we have climate data going back over 100 years for most of the world and meteorological data going back at least a few decades.

falkerie71 ,
@falkerie71@sh.itjust.works avatar

For a flying sim, you probably want “weather” data, not “climate” data. Like on this particular date, time, and location, data for the wind direction, rain, cloud formation, temperature, etc. That data would be humongous.

lowleveldata , to gaming in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty almost corrects the past

Upgrading your system to play the update isn’t “free.”
